Usually the point with LaTeX is to focus on the content and leave the presentation to the pre-existing templates. You can make it look however you want by modifying a template or creating your own template. Some things like font and general layout can be easily changed with extra packages, e.g. if you don't like the extra-wide margins (which are meant to keep line length to ~70 characters, the optimal length for humans), you can just use the geometry package:
