Hey guys, help me out by throwing few ideas my way. I am building VR app to help costumers select the paint color for their home/office.
So far i have a color pallet, ability to read color samples, ability to change time of the day + temperature of the lights (bright white, soft light, daytlight)
We can also change paint gloss, and recently, paint accent walls in different color.
Here is a quick 1 minute video of all the features.
So long as they suggest a specific device, the calibration should be standard across it. Right?
Like if they say "recommended use with the HTC Vive" and they target that.
Or have a range of color correction profiles for various devices, kind of like how some image editing software does with monitor color profiles.
Judging by the demo though, I'm guessing this will be an in-store thing anyway, not a download it yourself thing.

Consider adding fake people interacting with each other on the furniture or walking around, etc.

Rajeesh no!

I know that when I go paint shopping I want to stick a public VR headset on my face that's been worn by god knows how many day laborers fresh across the border and never once wiped down.
Jackson Brooks
I can't wait until I empty my house enough to get it repainted or get cute wallpaper.
Colors don't even look the same from one display to the next. How do you plan on making the colors displayed by your app actually representative of how the colors would look IRL?
Can you walk or you stand in one spot? On the video it shows only one view point.
Christopher Lee
Can I ask about the development? How big is the team, what is your part in it? I'm curious to hear what VR application development looks like outside of video games. People don't talk about it much but it seems useful in almost any area you would use a picture or screen. Except It's a portable 3D world. Very handy. And cheaper than holograms. youtube.com/watch?v=cWXLsbsrA9U or stereoscopic displays. youtu.be/QVhgUs3_RGU?t=248

Finally a Jow Forums poster, who is productive member to society
Asher Hill
Actually, it's only three of us.
I wouldn't even count myself, because my work is more administrative. I organize the events (so general public can try the program out and give us feedback). Or i come here to ask you guys for ideas and thoughts.
It's not about being photogenic, it's about the image you immediately project. Anyone looking at that picture will immediately notice how the left guy and the girl are the business/marketing people, respectively, and contribute nothing to the product itself. You can also immediately see that the guy on the left takes much more care about his appearance than the guy on the right, and the girl's body language shows how she's more interested in him despite the "nerd" being the one she can thank for for her salary and job. You don't even look that bad either, but your smile is a little awkward and you're not maximising your looks + you're standing next to "beautiful" people.
It's disgusting that they're taking advantage of you. You're probably a decent guy who bends over backwards to do what these two normies ask of you. Ditch them and get a team of nerds.
James Rogers
What a hasty conclusion to make literally based of a single image. Damn. I don't know if this is projection, bitterness, desperation, or what.
Nicholas King
That picture is just wack.
The girl giving the shoulder while you are supposed to be a team and the guy on the right (OP I suppose) over extending to touch chad who bangs the middle girl daily, it's all so fucked up.
Jordan Anderson
>tfw no qt vrdev gf
His English is very good. Very handsome. Hope things work out.
Asher Wright
It's a mix of many feelings. Rage against the normies because of what their body language immediately signals. Disgust at myself for knowing that I'd do what the girl is doing if I were in her position and want to bang the chad too. Pity for OP because he doesn't deserve to be instafucked by life just because he's not as hot as the other guy.
Angel Sanders
I can empathize with this, but I have changed to think differently now. I'm not going to suggest you strive to do the same, but I find it's been better for me. Less stressful, but admittedly, a little more boring. However, that will be my next challenge, to find value in something to give me joy. It's a long process. But I like not assuming the worst all the time.
In any case, ganbatte user.
Josiah Cooper
I wish that was me
Ryan Scott
Is that faggot on the left using an eyeliner?
James Gray
I came here for the feedback and ideas (regarding the VR app), but then got myself and my team overanalyzed.
Well, the handsome guy is actually handsome and with great English (and public speaking) skills, so i am glad he is the face.
The girl is the financial part of the team. Need money to build something.
And me is me, you guessed it right, the tech part of the team. But it is all three that makes the team.
You look like young cristiano ronaldo here you'll make it
Bentley Smith
For no makeup, you don't look bad at all. I like the jacket. You seem to have a good attitude as well. Stay strong in your efforts, even in the event this doesn't work out. It's good that you're trying things, it's rough to take that initiative with such few people, but it can pay off if you keep at it.
Gabriel Morales
It's just the picture you posted.
You look fine in this other one and yes, having a team like that is a good way to get bought by bigger corps for millions which is what every startup wants.
You'll probably end up more successful than most of this board but you might get better feedback on some normie site like r*ddit
Thank you all for your support! It's a great community here.
As for the program, i took notes of all the suggestions, and will try to implement what is possible.
You absolutely right. Drawables look awful.
Another interesting moment, after the first public test we have added few new features like the ability to paint separate walls in different color. This small change over complicated the program for users 50+, as now they had to look at the wall, paint the wall, lock the wall, etc.
So initial version of the program was less advanced, but a lot more practical for retail location. Here is a short video of the initial version.
Does new Oculus quest have camera? I know it got 4 cameras for position tracking, but I meant actual usable camera
Grayson Smith
Post on 8(REMOVE)chan, no one here knows shit.
Connor Myers
If you are the guy on the right get the fuck out of that team unless you are getting at least 85% of the money.
That girl in the middle is having hot sex with the other dude while you are doing real work.
Grayson Powell
You should port it to mobile or that new standalone Oculus thing (I think it's android based), not every shop will want to drop the cash for a Vibe and an gayman PC to run this.
Evan Thomas
Have a wide range of rooms/enviroments generated. Add possibility to modify floor material and furniture color. The consumer has to have an ability to replicate his own target space as accurately as possible.
For me this should ideally be an AR app. Otherwise I think it's easier to generate more informative results just with photos of clients space and Photoshop etc.
(But I have to say it's a cool project anyway. Architect here with current interest VR/AR.)
John Murphy
jesus christ you can smell the levels of cuck in this picture lmao
Nolan Jenkins
Why not just display it on a screen like normal instead of using that fucking VR gimmick that no normal person gives a shit about?
Blake Anderson
Just remember build demos, get views and fill some CV to get hire by others companies $$$ in case companies just fault.
Nicholas Bell
This is almost at the real meat. Other than market signaling and techno-wankery, what is something like this providing potential customers that a sample sheet or literature already does, for cheaper? The only things I could consider immediately would be the ability to sell better to customers in their homes or to shrink the size of the retail store/display.
Landon Ortiz
I mean... you came to Jow Forums for real world advice. What did you expect?
Jayden Gutierrez
At least it's "night Jow Forums" or early euro Jow Forums still. There's been some halfway decent discussion in the thread so far.
I'd personally like to hear more about the development, constraints, and etc.
Leo Thomas
I hope you learned not to post pictures of yourself here. You've gotten off very lightly, please be aware.
Dominic Jackson
Ability to add light source like lamps
Easton Morris
>the ability to sell better to customers in their homes oh my god, this, if you could get some software running that could change a wall's color in a vr headset wherever you brought it and patent the fuck out of it you'd never have to work again. big tech would snap that up for video games and interactive movies 20 years down the road.
Display is an option, but for the paint, you literally need to be submerged in to the environment.
Being inside the room you can tell, if this color works for you or not. Sample doesn't really help visualize that.
Like on this example (see image) because of the light flowing in to the kitchen area, near the window you can see on shade of light grey, and darker shade of the same color away from window. This sample doesn't really help with. This of this app as a extension to the sample.
That stuff doesn't really bother me. Was kind of funny actually.
can this run on the go? with the screen mirror update coming out soon, i would think it would be the best device for stores that don't want to buy a dedicated vr station
Jacob Rivera
Oculus Go would be ideal (Go is capable of running this software), but unfortunately it doesn't have front camera, that is used to scan bar codes of color sample cards.
VR is a meme gimmick fad that's already over, I ain't messing up my hair to view your shitty paints, paints are not that important.
Dominic Baker
You'd have better success with a porn VR game
Austin Hall
thats pretty amazing tech for unity. One quick technical question, if things are being generated on the fly how are you handling lighting, is it baked ? seems like there is global illumination going on in there.
Also whats the business plan for this ? are you selling the app to businesses (paint stores) only ?
How about expanding on that to real state so that you could offer customers an easy way to visualize any new construction project ?
Joseph Gutierrez
would it be possible to have codes that can be entered instead of barcodes for mobile versions? also since the go needs a phone to connect to, i wonder if there would be a way to use that camera for go apps
Cooper Cruz
fuck off to /b/ retards
Ian Hughes
I was surprised with Unity myself, original ideas was to go ahead with Unreal. In the latest version the lighting is baked and no global illumination, but yes, it only serves as a showroom for each separate color, with no ability to build your own layout.
As for business plan, we are still testing the market, participating in the events, to see what general public is looking for, or if this idea even worth it.
So far, we had surprisingly great reaction, with simple in store use version of the app.
So i guess one idea is to keep it as an extension to color samples, and another to create a version for builders/designers/etc.
We still don't know, there for i am here, ask around for your opinion and ideas.
This is interesting idea, will look in to it. Because it is possible to enter the codes, but, camera (or some sort of scanner) would make it more friendly for 50+ users
We would like to make it as simple to use as possible. You seen on the video what we were able to come up so far.
Lucas Hughes
I see, fyi I got a similar project going on where you can build construction projects at runtime but it doesn't look as pretty because lighting is dynamic, not baked, which means no global illumination. Unity offers lighting & reflection probes to approximate GI but it's not that accurate. Cant wait until realtime raytracing becomes the norm.
> In the latest version the lighting is baked and no global illumination
just so you know, baked lighting means global illumination (indirect lighting).
> So far, we had surprisingly great reaction, with simple in store use version of the app.
The majority of people are always going to be happy about trying new things, the issue is making sure that you can make a profitable business out of it. Its cool that you are going to events and have a platform to test your ideas before committing fully to them.
Lucas Williams
At minimum it worth the try i think
Hudson James
you should try to shave your head
Chase Lopez
Well, on the non program topic, i actually did thought about it.
I am a huge fan of Hitman games, even got this collectable, got the red tie and the Hitman pin for the tie.
how accurate is the render? If you're selling this to Lowes or Home Depot they're going to throw a fucking book at you. You had best ensure that the materials are impeccable and as close to what the customer will actually get as you can.
Add wall surface microgeometry to ensure that the customer can see the paint's gloss qualities. You may want to start the floor at a generic stained brown and poly'd surface. A home is an experience and you can't take any surface by itself.
James Evans
It's so immediately obvious that you're the actual programmer, the guy is running it all / paying you and the girl is just there for diversity / stage shows
Jack Adams
microgeometry related: youtube.com/watch?v=a5D1NTdGwU0 it doesn't have to be like this, but the principle is the same. gloss qualities are directly related to surface finish.
Thomas Mitchell
The color code (+ adjustment to the screen tone) is accurate, but the gloss is still somewhat off. I absolutely agree, that it has to represent reality as close as possible.
It is important how general public/potential partners perceive the team. It is actually the image we are going for. He runs the show, girl is an assist, and i am on the back end.
In reality thought, if you curious about our team, girl is actually the financial part, she loves the idea, guy is approachable, with good English (girl and me are Russian with heavy accent), ex Home Depot assistant store manager, and me, programming part + organizing events.
