Let's be honest...

Let's be honest, we don't need any new video codecs because AVC is already an overkill solution that is universally supported throughout multiple generations of mobile and desktop platforms. Especially as compute-intensive as AV1.

AV1 is an open, royalty-free video coding format designed for video transmissions over the Internet.

What?

Already in chrome and supposedly will be supported in firefox 63.

It will probably perform worse than HEVC just like VP8/VP9 did compared to H.264.

Perform worse in what way? It certainly is able to produce the same quality at lower bitrates. The speed is and always will be the problem.

who cares about browsers when you can stream with mpv

Without browsers having support, a website won't offer video in that format in the first place you dumbass.

We absolutely need a good free video codec standard. And AV1 could be it if we somehow get an encoder which is by magnitudes faster than the current alternatives. This applies to VP9 too, btw, what a useless joke that is: Basically single-threaded. Fine if you have a ton of clusters encoding a ton of files (=youtube's use case). Totally useless for everyone else.

No u

Nobody's optimising it for speed yet.

Normies are watching youtube cat videos in a browser, not monkey porn with mpv.
Weirdo.

>yet
as indicated, I really hope AV1 encoding becomes fast enough for it to be a viable alternative. I also have doubts. Because, said said, VP9 isn't there, it's not even close.

so it is a question of "yet" or "ever"

>DING DONG royalty-free

No more paying uncle goy for every device you ship with H.264/265

Valid scepticism, but at least we already got two non-commercial encoders. Hopefully the competition will move things forward.

AV1
AVI

Think about it.

Really makes you think.

Hear hear!

Let's be honest, we don't need more memory because 640K is already an overkill solution.

JEM/VTM looks like it's already doing much better than AV1. Looks like they need to get going on AV2.

>because AVC is already an overkill solution
h264 is shit in anything above 1080p

Wtf is JEM?

>Nobody's optimising it for speed yet.
Not true.
rav1e and dav1d are well along

Nah fuck H.264 non free bull crap

It's years away from being released and sites like Netflix and Youtube will never use it because of royalties anyway.

That's just wrong

AV1 is literally thousands of times slower to encode than h264 and h265.

Enjoy encoding a 2 minute long video in 2 days length.
