Previous thread: If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

Modern models: >X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light >T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series >T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0 >T440s - don't ever buy this meme >T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement) >P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.
Why ThinkPad? >Used machines are plentiful and cheap >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet >Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop >Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain >The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support
University surplus, was one of a huge stack of boxes of old laptops.
Asher Ross
By a bit, the X200/1 is 0.8" and the X300 is 0.75"
Hudson Nelson
Lucky, was there anything else interesting there for extremely cheap?
Easton Torres
Other than a bunch of thinkpads I got an oscilloscope and a chalkboard for $130
Jonathan Howard
nice, I need to see if my uni has something like that
James Hill
cool thinkkot op, going in the cat collection anyway im thinking of getting into learning about different operating systems and need a new thinkpad to get things going. itll also probably be my go-to for programming already use the x230 for basic shit and
gaming
, plus it's only got a 116 gb ssd so im already pressed for space thoughts?
Anyone ever have any luck offering to buy old thinkpads for cash on local buy/sell sites? The place I live is pricey to ship to and the local kijiji (leaf craigslist) only has like 60-100 ads for laptops at any given time, and a lot of those are overpriced local shops.
Carter Diaz
Greetz from my Thinkpad T530. Feels hella comfy.
Elijah Harris
I like the W500. I think it was the last W to not use Nvidia IIRC. I do not like Nvidia in laptops
Jack Sanchez
Well, I love it too but with the dedicated GPU on it idles at 70C, hah. Probably have to give it some fresh thermal paste though
Connor Brown
My T43p is out of commision due to its ATI chip running hot. I think it had some foam between the GPU and heatsink that I got rid of. I am planning on someday getting a copper shim to make up the difference. The machine runs, but the GPU idles at like 90C
Nicholas Hernandez
I like the x61s more >muh thin bezels
Ethan Taylor
honestly, yes. I have a 1440x900 X200s, but I think the X201s may be superior. One thing I like about my X200s which I think makes it better than the X201s is that mine has no touchpad; I like that about it. Honestly the X200s can be considered better when you take into account the less botnetty CPU I guess. But for sure, I think the 1440x900 X series are better than anything newer with a lesser resolution
Caleb Clark
What's so bad about the t440s besides the trackpad? Planning to order one this week.
Jace Bell
Can I still get brand new batteries for a T400? Did anyone ever figure out how to recell a third party battery?
Christian Parker
Castrated laptop, might as well get a macbook m8
Jeremiah Powell
What does that mean? T440s is the only affordable thinkpad I found that doesn't have a shitty 1368v766 screen.
Charles James
why is this ruskie fuck going to send me an invoice
Gabriel Lopez
when*
Kayden Richardson
You're not looking hard enough
Mason Miller
what other models have affordable 1080p screens? I can get the t440s for $480
Jaxson Powell
x220 and x230 can be fitted with 1080p panels for around $125-$130~ and a bit of soldering
Justin Fisher
meh, Id rather stick with the t440s
Jose Miller
Finally got around to putting a 480GB Kingston UV400 SSD in my T430s which was still using the stock 320GB drive.... uh it's good.
There is more than just soldering. As someone who solders every day at work, I have looked into this conversion, and have decided it is a pain in the ass for reasons not related to soldering
not who youre replying to but I use a mouse with my thinkpad. is the t440s good for me?
Nicholas Bailey
yikes, didnt catch that gonna go ahead and pass, thanks user
Ethan Wood
You can just buy the t450 trackpad and switch them in 20 minutes
Aaron Evans
Yeah I always use tp.krelay.de to check the oem specs of older thinkpads and just google the psref for newer ones.
Kevin Watson
are the non-Nvidia models available with 1080p?
Daniel Garcia
I know the T500 and W500 have different options, but are they basically the same machine? Like, are parts interchangeable between them? Or are they completely different?
Kevin Peterson
Is the X240 easily serviceable?
Jeremiah Perry
Grabbed my T430 for $110 and did the FHD mod for about $130.
Ryder Thompson
is there a way to tell if a display is ips without seeing it if they dont list it? like do most of the 8 gigs come with the ips or something along those lines?
I have a w520, and am thinking of getting a thinkpad for a mate for his birthday. T420 or T430? what is the difference?
Lincoln Garcia
T430, just a T420 without the classic keyboard (you can drop one in) with better hardware.
Leo Morales
Thanks dude. I shouldn't be looking at any other models in the T range, or is the T430 the way to go?
Jace Cooper
For something cheap and second hand the T430 is still a great option. If you're looking for something newer though I guess a T460 wouldn't be bad, but it's gonna cost more than a T430 by a lot. You can also splurge another $130 more on the T430 to get it a FHD IPS mod and screen so that it's a little more enjoyable to use.
Angel Long
I want to buy a W500 or T500 with WUXGA resolution. Is there a way to find out if a unit has this if it isn't explicitly stated?
Jackson Diaz
>but it's gonna cost more than a T430 by a lot. In that case I think ill just get the T430. Thinkpads are modular as hell, he can upgrade parts of it later, after i buy it for him.
David Fisher
that's a cute x60!
Ayden Evans
What would be the best "ultrabook" style Thinkpad to pickup?
Jordan James
thoughts? planning on ordering a thinkpad sometime this weekend and need it before wednesday cuz my campus post office'll be shut for fall break after that. was looking for t430s and this came up under 2 day shipping, the size and numpad are nice but is it really worth the extra cash? all the 430s that came up had ssds and i need SPACE over SPEED
I know this is /tpg/ but fuck if I can't find a good place to ask So we're going to get into some 3d modeling autocad shit this year. Am I going to run into any issues if I just plug my yoga 920 into a 2k monitor or am I going to have to bring my PC here for its GPU?
Joseph Sullivan
>*40* no
Julian Torres
>yoga 920 >AutoCAD
You could try shopping around for one of the older ZBook/Precision Models if you need a workstation brick to lug around.
You know, you can always buy another HDD/SSD if you need more space. They're not exactly stupidly expensive.
Caleb Peterson
I dropped my t420 and the hard drive is toast and the fan is loud as hell. CPU almost melted the plastic, memtest shows 63 degrees C what do i do lads
No Apperently there's more than one elk and the other one is a furry or a faggot whatever. I'm not changing a more than decade old nick just because of some faggot though. I don't even know what /sft/ is.
>actually buying a chinkbad >actually trying to justify your purchase
Jordan Martinez
Could someone tell me what I need to know about replacing a mobo on the x220?
How can I find out which boards are compatible? Where can I find the product or serial numbers on the hardware? I can't check anything in software if that was an option. Have a board on eBay I'm looking at but dunno if it's compatible.
Eli Rogers
Okay found this much there. Also found a picture of my bios.
Will I only be able to use these substitutions or are any of the boards in pic related suitable? Seems there are few 2540m but more 2520m which I figure is almost identical except for a tiny amount lower clock speed.
Noticing the boards that came up on Lenovos site have AES at the end of their frus. Am I going to get fucked by some sort of vendor encryption?
caveats: >2450m slightly slower than the standard 2520m, still good enough for general use >gotta replace that thermal paste >gotta get at least another 4gb stick to avoid swapping >gotta get an ssd. poorfag tip: just get whatever chink msata ssd (hopefully >64gb) on ebay for the system & keep spinning rust for anime & linux iso archiving >probably gotta get a new battery. poorfag tip: don't be afraid of chink 3rd party, or fuck it, keep the half-dead old one since you'll probably only ever use it untethered on the toilet. how often are you further than 6ft from a power outlet in your dumb life anyway?
Adam Morris
also: >probably 1366x768 tft. welcome to the worst screen of all time. try to find an 1600x900 alienware m14x r2 panel, or pay as much as you did on the laptop for the 1080p ips mod
Daniel White
that's really good for a Thinkpad. You in fact should delete this post else it may very well get snatched up.
