He published an article? Okay and?

This sounds almost exactly like urbit.

Give us a tl;dr

Literally my first thought, but people will actually use something by Berners-Lee rather than Moldbug.

Tim and some other faggot's want to create a system that decentralizes the internet so facefuck jewgle and the likes can no longer spy on users. Also it's open source

>this
I cant be fucked to read an entire article to form an opinion

What's the catch? There has to be a downside to this.

Not sure he says something about his invention shouldn't be used for evil and big corporations can fuck off

it's all pointless when you realize personal data can be copied and saved anyway?

What usually comes with decentralization, little backing from people with infrastructure, money, those sorts of things, but hey, if it works out in the long run, it'll be cool to see.
Also as a bonus, I don't know how well this would work, but you can store files anywhere and pull apps from anywhere, but the place you might be pulling from might not be updated, think of how communication moves around the world and how shitholes don't hear much of anything compared to first world countries.

The problem isn't technological. It's convincing chads and Stacie's to use it.

>Tim and some other faggot's want to create a system that decentralizes the internet so facefuck jewgle and the likes can no longer spy on users
uh, no. That's not what he's proposing at all.

If you read the actual proposal, he wants to establish an online identity for everyone- i.e., no more anonymity. This is exactly what the sjews want.

Attached: tim-berners-lee-proposal.png (1247x352, 79K)

Disgusting

It makes zero fucking sense. Basically he is proposing that everyone be assigned their own data space where all their personal information is stored, and that's the only place where you can find out information about people. But this is no way dissuades jewgle from building a digital fingerprint of you and simply continue to data mine your ass without your permission.

The only explanation for the proposal being this retarded is that there is an ulterior motive, see:

who cares about stacies and chads, let them have the old internet and we get ours.

also meshnets when?

how would Jow Forums build a totally decentralized internet, immune to corpos, SJWs, stacies , chad and normies? also feds?

i2p is an interesting start

the next gen internet should have the following IMO

total decentralization
inbuild encryption
immunity to denial of service attacks
mesh networks ??

what else?

Sounds even shittier than urbit then

this is a common flaw in old-old-fag's perceptions of the internet. As in people who were on the internet back in the 80s before any businesses were there at all, beyond a few people who literally made the computers. They still have this idea that it should be a collegial place where everyone knows each other, nobody's anonymous, and the only security you should have or need is a gentleman's agreement not to peek.

That internet is dead and buried and gone forever. Of course, they still wish it existed. You can see this in the people who complain about how HTTPS is "bloat" and wasteful and should only be used for things like banking. They decry universal encryption because obviously cat pictures don't "need" TLS. This is the same thing. You'll never get Google and Facebook and banks to give up the data they collect, except by force. The only meaningful use of this "solid" project is telling companies "no, you can't have my data", and as a result they'll never sign on to it. Believing that they will is just believing in the long-dead Santa-Claus fairy tale of that small, collegial internet where everyone knew your name and nobody was malicious.

I don't get it.

The question I always have for these type of things is "how do I make money using it?"

When I can't find an answer, I know it's hipster bullshit.

>When I can't find an answer, I know it's hipster bullshit.
what is open source then?

>decentralization

No thanks. I'm host helping you host child porn by dedicating my computer as an internet node.

Saving me $100 by not buying a windows licence.

Read thia faggots, it explains it beter.
google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/9jyb2y/tim_bernerslee_launches_open_source_project_solid/

Well, thats a lot worse than what I had in mind, fuck that noise.

>google
>amp
>reddit
So this is what we've come to

That's exactly the mentality Tim is trying to avoid. In the 90s and early 2000s people were hosting dumb websites for no reason other than to share content with whoever finds it. There was no monetary gain for anyone and in fact almost everyone was paying out of their own pocket to host it. Now everything everywhere relies on advertising and if money isn't being generated then it's not staying up.

> everything revolves around advertising and quickly resorts to appeasing the lowest common denominator

Welcome to capitalism.

It doesn't "decentralizes the interwebs" by what I understand. It just concerns itself with user data.

Its just a new safe and decentralized system to store user data and use it to interact with websites and apps ( similarly to how people use their google of facebook account to log into stuff, and have all their information synchronized ) but in a way that gives the user more power over what is being shared and with who and doesn't leave all your information in the hands of corporations that will abuse it.

it doesn't bring in money and it doesn't benefit anyone in marketing

>But this is no way dissuades jewgle from building a digital fingerprint of you and simply continue to data mine your ass without your permission.

Yes it does. By removing them from the equation. The thing is: for it to work, people would need to stop using google for everything and use this new system instead.
Would be nice, but I don't see it happening in the near future.

>Buzzword buzzword buzzword buzzword
This was a a silly waste of my time user

Just use blockchain

Tim Berners-lee is an ancient boomer and has been circlejerking over the semantic web for over a decade now.
Sorry Tim it's never going to work, and you're cluster fuck of shitty W3 standards and marketing buzzwords is a non-starter.

this sounds exactly like a code of conduct

>Also it's open source
Does it have a CoC?

Good summary.

tim berners lee pls go

Sounds nice but it's missing a lot of technical information so I'm not really interested. I'll continue to shill for IPFS. There's a fast cloudflare gateway now!

>Build some perfectly technically great solution
>That's only used by autists, like GNU Social
>Five years old, it suddenly becomes popular
>Something like Mastodon embraces the protocol and gets built with SJW features as a first class feature
>SJWs flock to it
>There's a #forkmastodon trending hashtag because SJWs feel it doesn't go far enough
>Discussions about how to build a better system

>AMP was a mistake

I'll make the logo

wouldn't snychronisation of data be a problem?

If people would use it

TBL? Why cant we get the opinion of a real authority? Where is that black guy that invented the internet the kangz was telling me about? What does he have to say about this?

Ask /x/

It's got the same basic problem though. End user systems are unreliable garbage. A big part of the value add of cloud/SaaS for normies is that professionals handle the management side. Anything hosted solely or primarily on end user home systems can and will be horrifically disrupted by toddlers armed with peanut butter sandwiches.

>Anything hosted solely or primarily on end user home systems can and will be horrifically disrupted by toddlers armed with peanut butter sandwiches.
The cloud bullshit is never going away

I'm actually working with it at the moment, it's some pretty cool tech. The general idea is that instead of a corp or centralized data repo you have refrences to data (and more importantly) relationships between said data. You have an identity that is tied to either a provider or self hosted and is as personally identifiable as you want (Hell if a username is too much you can use fucking TLS certs).

But the idea is this. The data is pulled from elsewhere and not served from the source. So let's say I have a Jow Forums style board, I might have a list of IDs where various threads could be pulled from. The client (web or otherwise) requests this data from your POD (where you have control) and pulls from there. So in this situation, I have a list of users that I've been keeping in my pod, my client takes a look at their shitpost/g/ directory and trys to find anything with metadata matching a OP post (using a Query Language) it then collates these together and grabs the various responses and whatnot in a dynamic fashion. If a poster wants to delete a post, they modify or change the ACL on their pod and poof! When a reply is made to a thread it refrences with a XML like syntax to other data sources and content. It's a little convoluted and aimed at a technical crowd, but that's the platform being built on.

Now as a developer, I work on making a nice UI for the thing and coordinating things like blacklisted user hashes and whatnot. But this UI only applies to how I want this data to be displayed. Anyone else could take my interface and point it at a different POD and use its data. In effect, you get Jow Forums, 420chan, whatever the pedo chan is and anything you can think of with no backend changes. The user is in control. Just like what happens to their posts.

The other thing about this is that the data and relationships between it are the value. So if you don't like how hiro is running his site, you make your own frontend to work with the ALREADY LINKED AND AVLIBLE DATA!

It's all on github and it works. But is def rough around the edges. It's a work in progress.

That's the thing with solid. It acknowledges this and allows 3rd parties to act as POD providers. You can have your data encrypted and whatnot so that it's opaque to the operators, but still accessible with the correct login. This gets past the problem of trying to serve a mesh from a mobile connection. The POD is the central repo of data, and the POD can be moved. Don't like googles mail? Take your POD to yahoo and move your data with it.

Not yet anyway. But it serves as a good starting point to create a decentralized graph of the relationships between our data. The power of a network is n^2, this can be bigger then any one company. There isn't much to stop siphoning of data apart from granular ACLs, but I have faith that solutions will be built. Remember this doesn't effect the transport layer. So bolting it onto TOR or IPFS is trivial

he a cuck SJW commie

To work on this decentralized Jow Forums idea: I don't need to worry about moderating CP or anything like that, nor do I need to censor. I can if I choose to but as I am not hosting the offending posts, it is not my liability.

The value of social media isn't in the websites. It's in the network relations between peers.

>Guy developing free software is a commie
>More news at eleven

also gubbmint can decide to take away your pod and now your fucked

>synchronization of data
a solution without a problem. kys google kike

t.sponsored by telcos to sell more bandwidth because streaming 4k is trivial now and people need to be sold increasingly expensive services

>I am not hosting the offending posts, it is not my liability.
yeah unless you're in a retarded european jurisdiction that forbids downloading and counts thumbnails cached by the browser as downloaded

Except that's wrong you fucking retard.

Host your own instance with self signed certs and keep separate identities on separate servers. Anonymity can be preserved and discarded at will. This just adds a way to verify that the source is who says it is.

It's not full blown Anonymous, but similar to namefagging

lol why is that retard hosting his blog on medium and not on his own website? ahahhaaha even he doesn't use his own invention as he intended it to be used. what a loser and a cuck. i hope jihadis get him when they have their next spergout in europe

> inequity
using leftist kampfbegriffe like a good little revolutionary. will blacklist all his pods

So don't cache the thumbs and have it stored at post time with the full res image and text with the users post? Hell the entire thread is composed of references to where the posts and data are. I don't even need them in my POD that can be stored with on the OP posters POD.

Literally all that needs to be stored in my POD is a list of seed IDs, a Schema for the layout of posts and that's it. The heavy lifting is done client side.

>So don't cache the thumbs and have it stored at post time with the full res image and text with the users post?
kek, how do you prevent that in modern browsers anyway? but that's a great solution for technically inept users lol. "just make sure you uncheck this mark or you'll go to jail". fucking spergs I swear. I hope the SJWs destroy everything that's dear to you.

I meant on the server end, if you end up DLing some CP you need to watch where you're going online.

I don't care about users getting v&, it's about hosting the shit. If user want's to host CP, that's on him.

Can't wait for protocol 7 boiiiii

i'm probably missing the point of decentralized internet. what's the point of it? you'd still be fucked by isps if you do something they don't like. meshnet would work like ass because of downtime between nodes. why not just encrypt everything?

CoC

check zeronet, its already a thing

>medium

Xanadu 2: Electric Boogaloo

>nodejs-based
into le /bin/trash/ it goes.
We have erlang/elixir and go in 2018, they're insane to want to rewrite web backends in js, heck they can even write parts in c++ when performance REALLY matters.
the technical burden of js is simply to big for such a big scheme.
it will fail.

So why even bother? Yea sure the pod thing, but why would I want to store all my personal information on a network. His vision calls for more than just secure online banking. He wants you to put your medical records, birth certificate, etc. online and tied to your pod identity.

The general argument for node is "use the same language for front-end and back-end to avoid metaphor shear." It's awful but there it is. We need a time machine to force Netscape to use Scheme instead of inventing JS.

GOOD !!

Like, hard fucking pass.
Never mind the fact that "self-hosted" means you had better be able to handle jillions of connections through your shitty colo, or worse your home Internet connection.

MOAR LIEK SOLID LOG

What a bullshit.

Not reading because AMP

>Oh no! It seems you're trying to use our service with an alternative identity! Please use your real identity instead and try again!
If you need their services, they'll make the rules. There's no way around it. Nowadays, I can still post in Jow Forums when recaptcha doesn't decide I'm some sort of suspect just because my fingerprinting is fucked up. I imagine in a few years that will be impossible

This won't work. This can't work.
The big companies will never give up the iron grip they have on everyone's data.

Also, to do anything, we don't just need what few techies there are. We'd need the normies to change and to demand change.
But they won't. Facebook is free and all their friends are there, so they see no reson to change at all.

>user, use retinal scan reCAPTCHA to keep posting!
