Given how many communities I've seen destroyed by people abandoning IRC (which is open, somewhat browsable with singleton channels that anybody can access, and has a strong egalitarian free speech tradition) in favour of Discord (isolated channels that you need an invite too or you'd never know existed and can't be found by serendipity, and somehow universally dominated by ban-lusting authoritarian SJW mods even when the original community was all oldschool grognards) for no good reason that I can tell, I have a strong unironic suspicion that the whole thing is a fucking psyop.

Discord's entire draw is its media integration, where photos are directly embedded, links have previews, and the emoji library is massive. I'm not much familiar with IRC but I doubt it comes near as close to resembling social media as Discord does. That isn't to rule out your theory, though - it's a very shady platform the more you look at it.

The Discord Problem (the discord caused by Discord, haha) is that it is a discussion platform frequently adopted by **communities that are already dedicated to discussion** i.e. imageboard and forum communities and irc channels. By adopting Discord, those communities develop a schism, where an event that happens within Discord can affect interactions on the wider community, but only Discord participants understand why.

This leads to us-vs-them friction, and frequent problems may result in a split, where a share of once-active community members only use the Discord where all their references are understood, a minority choose to troll around in both, and the "original" community is left weakened and bitter.

Discord isn't the first thing to cause these problems; /a/ used to complain all the time about IRCfags, invite-only subcommunities existed even on usenet, but I think the network effect has dramatically amplified Discord's power due to it being way easier to use.

Which is more secure to use, the client or the web version of Discord? I'm getting really sick of the game scanning feature turning itself back on after every update when I specifically turn it off every single time. I really hate this software in general, the UI is atrocious and must have at least 25% of the screen filled with nothing but empty space. I wish people had adopted something else but if you want to be active in any online communities nowadays you're forced to use it. It's horrible.

I don't think it's intentional. I think that it was very good at bringing a lot of people together and people fight each other and the more time people spend together the more likley they are to fight.

Besides that there's also the fact that the program is set up so that ever room has someone who is in charge, and if the person who is in charge isn't good at dealing with the whole ingrained us/them mentality people have naturally and diffusing issues that arise from it then shit is gonna happen.

If you're having trouble with fighting with people then take a week to chill on your own. I won't say it always worked for me, but it's the most successful strategy I've found so far.

My friends and I use one channel to talk and play games, and we have no problems. All the drama that we have is from the outside world, not because of discord.
