Why all the hate for Windows, Jow Forumsuys? Is Lincucks that much better?
Because they'd rather pretend they're better than you by using a free OS and pretending it isn't filled with botnets even though their hardware is a botnet in and of its self.
Eli Taylor

Bought a laptop today for roughly 400 usd. It had windows 10 on it. Took forever to boot, took forever to finish updating, took forever to reboot, and then when it came to actually using it, it took forever to even open a web browser. >clean install windows rather not when linux is free, easy and runs faster

Yeah, Linux is FAAAAAAAR better than Wincuck 10.
>inb4 u have shit PC yeah, but this just shows that modern Linux is way better than modern Windows (even if you want to play older games). >inb4 u should have used wincucks 7 internet doesn't work with wincucks 7 on this PC. yeah, microsoft fucked up that as well

With multiple monitors, a game, various chat clients, and various services running, I'm using 5gb of 16gb. On windows 10.
CPU usage with all of this open? Bouncing from 8-10%.
What are you people doing to make your computer run this poorly?

I mostly use Linux, but I have to use Windows 10 for work, so I'm getting a good view of both pretty regularily.
Reasons for my boss using Linux over Windows on the desktop, even tho he's a Windows guy: - Windows Update. Unrealistically slow, forcing updates onto you. - Disk space usage. When you have a lot of VMs, it quickly becomes clear how ridiculous Windows is in this part; taking more than 12GB on average, and you have to clean up space after every update. That is *without software added*, just the OS. - Other resources used. Unrealistically large amounts of RAM, CPU and disk usage on idle, indicating what the OS is: A BitTorrent client allowing Microsoft to deploy their updates. That guy still runs Windows on the server tho, lol.
Reasons for me (a nerd) to use Linux & BSD: - Better overall stability and performance in my experience - Package management - Actually managable containers/jails (LXD/iocage) - I can learn about my OS and know how it works - zfs
I use Void btw.

It breaks during updates. Several times. Both mine and my wife laptops. Repeatedly.i have to restore from backup discs 4 GOD-DAMNED times in less than 6 months. So yeah updates are completely fucking broken. Switched both laptops to Linux mint and the never ending nightmare fucking stopped. Don't know what the fuck it was screwing up, but the OS would update, restart as expected, and then never boot to desktop. And no windows rescue discs did not work...needed to restore from backup every fucking time. Now that we've switched there are a few other things we like about Linux. The boot up time is awesome. By that I mean the time from start it takes to be useable even with an HDD was way faster. Mind you windows gets to the desktop quicker, but it's unusable with a dozen fucking programs all try to startup and run at once, whereas Linux gets to desktop slower but is actually fucking usable when it's gets there so over it's much quicker.
Just my story. There's other things i like since switching if anyone gives a shit.

most of the windows 10 hate you see comes from chads who pirated it from a slav torrent with a chinese keygen that then rapes their computer in the ass. it crashes every ten minutes and they blame microsoft.

>Terrible UI inconsistency >Two kinds of font antialiasing >All kinds of varying visual decorations and styles (some people have discovered up to seven varying styles in Windows 10) >Absolutely dissimilar classic and new control panels >Different font faces and sizes all around >Absolutely different context menus and their appearance in different applications and apps >Terrible hardly-configurable appearance, dubious design choices and extremely limited functionality (vs Windows 7/XP) >Two Control Panels with absolutely zero thought given to how they differ and why each one should be used >Some Control Widgets are spread between the two Control Panels which is utterly confusing >No Windows classic UI for windows decorations >Windows decorations can hardly be configured at all >An awful choice of colors/palette >Absolutely awful, childish and amateurish icons (the current release features slightly better icons) as if we live in the era of eight-bit displays (only rivalled by those in Windows 3.1 from 1992). I dont see how this will happen at all. Windows 10 is far more powerful than Windows 7, and runs twice as fast. It is also much harder to pirate, and this point more than anything else has the Linux crowd in a panic.
It wont be long until Windows 7 is no longer supported, and when that happens, what is Linux going to do ?
Linux will have to find a way to work under Windows 10 from here on, since it wont be able to rely on 7 being readily available anymore.
Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence.
This is just plain piracy.
Windows 10 will finally put an end to this blatant abuse of intellectual property, and linux should decline, taking the pirates with it.
Anyone that supports the continuation of Windows 7 in place of Windows 10 surely has a hidden agenda .. and you will surely be caught out.

Linux looks very interesting, even if some of the screen colours and menu options appear to be a little out of the ordinary.
But you are missing a vital point, a point which takes some experience and depth of knowledge in the field of computers. You see, when a computer boots up, it needs to load various drivers and then load various services. This happens long before the operating system and other applications are available.
Linux is a marvellous operating system in its own right, and even comes in several different flavours. However, as good as these flavours are, they first need Microsoft Windows to load the services prior to use.
In Linux, the open office might be the default for editing your wordfiles, and you might prefer ubuntu brown over the grassy knoll of the windows desktop, but mark my words young man - without the windows drivers sitting below the visible surface, allowing the linus to talk to the hardware, it is without worth.
And so, by choosing your linux as an alternative to windows on the desktop, you still need a windows licence to run this operating system through the windows drivers to talk to the hardware. Linux is only a code, it cannot perform the low level function.
My point being, young man, that unless you intend to pirate and steal the Windows drivers and services, how is using the linux going to save money ? Well ? It seems that no linux fan can ever provide a straight answer to that question !
May as well just stay legal, run the Windows drivers, and run Office on the desktop instead of the linus.
If one makes the presumption that the modern IT is all about the internet, then you have to ask yourself 'Does Linux even have a choice in this matter ?'
A modern computing system is not one that is run from the command line - it is a system that is tied in with the internet Cloud. Just have a look at Windows 10 with Cortana and OneDrive for an example of this done right.
You need the outlook to connect in with the mass of email flowing around us every day. And then there is document collaboration - the sharing of Wordfiles and Excels between users across state boundries ! Voice over IP, cloud enabled 'Surface' computing, and voice command interfaces - all tied together with .NET and the OneDrive.
The driving force behind this internet is the Microsoft Sharepoint Server - a central peice of systems software which connects all these end points together, in a synergistic kaleidoscope that achieves both balance and symmetry.
The smart Vendors know that in order to get ahead in the future IT, that means integrating with the Cloud.

Oh another couple of things I like since I've switched to Linux and one thing I fucking hate. First things I like, no ads in the start menu, no telemetry bullshit (and no you cannot fully turn that crap off) and drivers are way easier on Linux. Here's an example, my wiiu pro controller cannot work on windows without either an amazing shitload of configuration or just paying straight up money for a mayflash adapter. Linux it picked it up on Bluetooth and it 'just werks' with no hasso or bullshit. The final like item is steam/proton. Almost everything that this laptop can be expected to run WORKS. I've brought over almost my entire game library no issue. The only thing I hate about Linux is I can't get my akai mini mpk2 to work with it. I think this maybe akais fault since others apparently have no issue with midi controller but I can't get the damn thing to work so yeah. I just keep it hooked up to my win 10 desktop.
If I could get my midi controller to work I'd never go back to Windows 10 for anything.
yeah, my friend's pc had a coin miner cpu was always at 100% and he had avast. As soon as he uninstalled avast, defender kicked in and it caught it immediately

>1809 update >can fully connect to android device >now windows will know who you text and what you say

It's like fucking pokemon, you pick one and just have to get used to it's upsides and downsides
-Looks like shit thanks to terrible UI inconsistency. -The options to change that are close to non-existent -Telemetry and advertisements even though you paid for it. -Less control of your system, which keeps getting worse the more they try to make it retard-proof. -Worse performance -Shit forced updating that takes too long and breaks some devices. -Absolutely unusable on older hardware. I have always used it and will continue to use it alongside linux, but I would gladly make the switch if I didn't need windows for software that lack a decent linux version/alternative. Linux sadly isn't perfect either.

buy a legit windows 7 key and upgrade to 10, idk if it still works
You can also just buy them from ebay but it's possible they might scam you and resell the same key later
Angel Bennett
I only use windows because some critically needed software is windows only in college, like CAD, FEM and simulations software. I would rather use a linux install so I don't have to deal with the slowing down and various update induced crashes. Which is funny, it was a linux "feature" you had to repair your OS after every update. Somehow the tide has changed but the bullshit software recommendations are windows only. Even a mac would be better than a windows pc.

One more motive to use a Linux based distribution (Linux is just the kernel), you can customize it to fit in your hardware like a glove. I've saved pretty shit old hardware in my house and put them in production again using Debian with XFCE.
Do you really believe you need to buy a new hardware every year to open up the same spreadsheets, webpages and watch the same movies? How gullible are you?

I don't hate Windows. I run 7 as my main OS. I hate Windows 10. TL;DR it's a tablet/phone OS not a desktop OS.

>enormous library of free software The sole fact that the majority of the software available on the Windows platform is free of charge does not automatically imply that said software is truly free. In fact it is very often the case that it is not as free as the creators claim it to be - collecting various user data without the user's consent, forcefully installing heavy "updates", behaving in a manner similar to how malware/spyware usually operates. The operating system itself lacks the very basic functionality (as for instance compression handling, package managing, well.. you cannot even check the SHA hash without having to resort to some shady third party software) which is absolutely ridiculous taken into account that the price starts at "mere" $139, not $20 as you incorrectly suggest. Yet another thing that I find of rather great importance, and I think almost every user should is security which is something that has been neglected in the Windows world on almost every occasion - the scripting engines enabled by default are still there, powershell is still there, PE32 executables are still there, insecure Office macros are still there, almost non-existent distinction between a regular user and root is obviously still there, in fact very little has been done for the last two decades in order to improve the situation - actually ironically the platform appears to be filled with even more bugs and serious security flaws than EVER before (to name a few recent ones - CVE-2017-8570, CVE-2017-11882, CVE-2018-8412. The software that Microsoft produces is also of very low quality - even the Microsoft employees do not use Edge when hosting presentations which says a lot about the browser and the company.
Christian Gonzalez
No. I just said his hardware is shit, because it is.
I don't hate Win10 but it's easily the most irritating of the big 3 and winds me up every time I use it. Pic related for example is fucking baffling, I close everything and five minutes later I still can't eject USB drives. it's a fucking joke compared to linux/osx

I don't speak up for Jow Forums, but personally I started to find every version of Windows above 7 extremely annoying with time. I don't hate Windows, I hate what Microsoft does with her own technologies.
It took a bit more time to me to get used to Linux, but when I learned the basics doing day-to-day tasks felt a lot smoother and faster than newer versions of Windows. When I have to use Windows 8 and 10 in my work it's always an awful experience, do simple stuff in it became fucking painful duo to it's weird delays, the system simply don't kill some processes you tell them to, the telemetry consumes internet more than necessary, the sudden updates screw your work and your time.
Windows 7 was the pinnacle of Microsoft's operating systems, they're just going to throw it in the trash, and I'm tired of being a laboratory rat to test their shitty algorithms. Sometimes I have the impression that Microsoft's main goal is to cause pain in it's users.
>internet doesn't work with wincucks 7 on this PC. yeah, microsoft fucked up that as well pretty sure that's just because you're retarded, unless you're running Kaby Lake or newer system, in which case Windows 10 should run fine
Owen Foster
>install w7 >need to fuck with drivers >install w10 >need to disable shit and run 3rd party programs to stop it from installing fucking candy crush

My God, I haven't seen this pasta in years. The fact that newfags are biting on it warms my heart.
I don't have anything against Windows, I just consider it to have a few issues (but then again in my case, every single OS has some issues, so I can't complain much). In the case of Windows 10...
-It's barely customizable, with more and more attempts by microsoft to keep you from modifying system files -Font rendering ain't precisely good -Tries to shove its gaming mode and fullscreen optimizations, something you have to disable for many titles to work correctly -You can't really disable all the tracking and data gathering without breaking something or stopping updates altogether, and can't really select which updates you want to install -If you want less of this, you're (until now I guess, since LTSC came out) fucked out of luck with a buggier, older version -New dark mode is pathetic, have seen better looking shit on deviantart for generations now -Speaking of that, the default theme -is- pathetic too. The complete lack of detail and gradients just shows laziness and is not good for the eyes
I don't know if there's anything else I could mention but yeah, it does have its problems. Compatibility wise though, better than macOS, better than Linux. That can't be beat at least for now, no matter if they push random WINE versions and patches or if Valve tries hard to keep that ball rolling.
Isaiah Brown
>gradients I almost considered your opinion valid for a moment there.
