Alternative Operating Systems general

Alternative Operating Systems General

>What is this?
An attempt to concentrate discussion about "alternative" operating systems, aka OSes which are only sporadically discussed or have too few users to keep their own threads alive.
>Why do this?
Because I think it would be an interesting thread to have around in the board, prompting users to poke around, experiment and to exchange ideas and knowledge about this often sidelined software.

Questions for anyone interested:
Are you running any of these systems? If so which ones? real hardware or VMs?

Ideas and suggestions regarding the content of the OP are welcomed too!

Does Slackware count?

It's what I started on back in 2013 because Ubuntu at the time just wouldn't work with my hardware. It forced me to learn cli, compiling, etc. Now a days every distro has a GUI for everything and nobody is forced to learn the terminal anymore. Even now using Arch I get lazy and only ever open the terminal to run htop or pacman for package updates/installations.

>hipster operating systems

I wish there was a close to the metal modern OS like amiga OS.

Try AROS

I want to install this nordier.com/v7x86/ on a Thinkpad but I can't figure out what the correct partition layout is.

Haiku is what OS X should have been.
