It's cheaper, with proper gui you would give pajeet to write a code and then hire expensive designer to do front end because pajeets can't into aesthetics.

Material isn't flat though. Material is a pretty good design scheme that had a lot of thought put into it and is very intuitive to use, flat is literally just flat.
Flat is lazy design. If Microsoft switched to Material design then we wouldn't have a problem with it.

CDE looks nice but it was horrible to use. 4Dwm on IRIX was much nicer if you were ever into Unix with Motif. The only downside is that it had very limited proprietary hardware support. That's still the case since you can't emulate it.

You can run CDE on Linux now though since it's out under the LGPL.
