Switching to Linux

I want to switch from Windows to Linux. What distribution of Linux should I install?

install gentoo

install exherbo or lfs

gentoo

Ubuntu is your only choice, the rest are all just gimmicky shit

install gentoo

nixOS

+1 for Ubuntu

You never used linux, did you?

>Having any other WM than the default one breaks the OS
yeh buddy, why not go for linux mint?

Ubuntu MATE or Linux mint. The latter one is based on ubuntu as well, so don't worry. It has got support for most drivers, so no nonfree stuff to worry about. Both are very lightweight, so don't worry. If you want to step your game a bit up, use xubuntu. Not only is it modular, but it's also very light.

Ubuntu. Most others will see you switching back to windows because you'll be outside your comfy windows zone. Ubuntu does an alright job at treating you like a list child.

Or Raspbian ;)

Lost.... Lost child

i've switched from windows to arch and never looked back since then. if you're autistic enough to spend a little more time on installation it can turn out more fun for you.

Arch or possibly Manjaro.
Or Ubuntu

Ubuntu, it just werks

>pacman -Syu
>"ERROR: X.org Xserver cannot start (Connection refused)"

Mint Os is all you need

gr8 meme

Look up Ubuntu and Mint. There are also various desktop environments such as KDE, Gnome, LXQt, MATE, Xfce, don't know if Mint is still working on Cinnamon, Budgie and the Chinese botnet one called Deepin (it's probably not botnet though). You might want to get different distros and desktop environment combinations and try them out before installing. Just keep in mind running it from ISO will be slower than when installed so don't focus on performance but rather looks and exploring the default programs.

Don't fucking switch unless you want to do coding, Linux offers nothing over Windows except mildy better security. Windows runs every game and application you can think of while Linux fucking does't. Don't fall for the meme.

openSUSE

Is this 2007 again?

This. Don't listen to fucking freetards. They just want more people in their sect.

Ubuntu, then probably wait for Fedora 29.

What if OP isn't a gamer manchild?

If you are more than a beginner and can google your problems use Debian testing. It's comfy

Kubuntu / KDE Neon, as it looks like Windows.
After that you can experiment with other shit.

Debian, Ubuntu or Mint.

>install gentoo
This.

Use Wine or Proton for gayms faggot

this but stable

Mint is annoying and buggy.

Linux lets me actually shutdown my pc when I want to, and doesn't run updates by its own will unless I tell it to. Use windows if you think your computer should have power over you.

stupid people like it, so they don't have to think for themselves

I don't understand how they can like it. Having my computer do things without my permission is extremely creepy to me. How do they not get creeped out by it?

ubuntu, debian, opensuse, arch, gentoo

I think Arch is the best. It just works. Debian or fedora are also good choices but they require a bit more work to get everything working

Try kubuntu in a VM first sir.

I'll go for vanilla Ubuntu if Gnome wasn't this shitty.

You can try Ubuntu MATE, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, I personally went for Mint. But anyway, keep a distribution based on Ubuntu, for .deb packages, PPA repos, it's just more convenient.

they are scared of technology anyway, this way they dont have to make a decision about anything

Objectively speaking Windows is more secure than Linux, it just has a larger marketshare so its targeted more.

>DEP > N^X
>better ASLR entropy and randomness than linux
> SEHOP, RELRO, Memprot, Simexecflow, stackPivot, loadlib, heapspray detection, etc ..

Mint Xfce or Ubuntu GNOME

This, any Ubuntu spinoff is a good choice

manjaro gets my vote

Start with the easy, Ubuntu

Whatever you see yourself at. It's much more fun if you like the distribution you use instead of using it because some retard says it's the best.

I don't like how Ubuntu and the likes handle user packages - either via PPAs, or .debs. PPAs slow down updates and downloading .debs from Internet is Windows-tier in my opinion. I like how Arch/Manjaro/Antergos handles user packages via AUR, the only downside is that these packages need to compile, which takes time. I'm on Manjaro myself and I recommend Manjaro over Ubuntu for user-friendliness.

There aren't a lot of freetards here, almost nobody uses FSF approved distros. Most like Linux (GNU/Linux, if you will) because it's better than macOS and Windows in several other ways, for example: sane package management, customizability, overall workflow and open nonrestricted nature of the system - Windows and macOS don't let you see most of the internal processes. I myself think that free/open-source software is better because of level of control it gives you.

Go for Devuan. Trust me, im an engineer

i used dragora for a bit but it was poorly supported. debian is in essence fsf approved, it was only taken off because it hosts non free repos (which are disabled by default and not essential). rms used to use it as well

what makes ubuntu "easy" compared to any other distro?

Debian is the most sane free distro, yes, but most enable non-free repos. Also Debian's view on free software is a bit different than FSF, if I remember correctly.

Manjaro.

Literally anything that is compatible with your machine as that's the big issue. I'm a tradesman and enjoy the free software from CAD to GIS to office to gimp. Also installing hoteldruid in a second is a big help too.

I tried switching back to windows but it's far too annoying to use now, no matter the flavor.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

what you saying?

but he's right. OP probably never used linux before and if he wants an OS tha just werks he should go with X/L/Ubuntu or Fedora workstation

Anyone who doesn't use [insert favorite distro here] is a literal subhuman.

>Having any other WM than the default one breaks the OS
Maybe if you're a brainlet. I have 2 DEs and 1 WM installed and everything works just fine.

Linux is dead m8.
Stay the fuck back from it and move to BSD.

not mine, just saying that if you think Ubuntu is not as modular as Debian you have not tried Ubuntu after learning linux. This is the problem with Jow Forums, Ubuntu reminds them they came from windows. While real power users have switched from other distros to Ubuntu

It depends on why you want to switch

Can somebody just post the fucking chart already?

yes, which is why its no longer fsf approved, but close enough. desu i prefer debians views (which i think are "use propietary until free is available")

what chart?

>What distribution of Linux should I install?
if you have the time: all of them

install ubuntu, use it for a week or two, then install fedora, use that for a week or two, then try linux mint for a week or two and then you'll probably have an idea which you prefer

it really doesn't actually matter that much, though, you get pretty much the same system anyway.

as for your final choice, I would put some weight on what your friends use (if any use linux) and what local linux user groups (if any) there are. that would make it slightly easier to get help if you need it

None, stick with windows.

Mint, Xubuntu or ZorinOS.

Enjoy your cuck kernel

If you are new to Linux i would recommend Manjaro or Mint
Devuan is comfy too
Gentoo is not very beginner friendly

NT? I dont use garbage

There's is no other correct answer than this

Ubuntu is a good starting distro, and it's comfy as fuck. It's not what I use primarily, but that's because I'm an elitist who deliberately uses advanced distros to look smart. (BTW, did I tell you I use Arch?)

If you are new to linux or even if you're an expert ubuntu is the best distros right now. If you don't want bloat get the minimal package or w/e and only install what you need. It is the most supported distro, the most people using, the most guides, the most packages, and then just customize it however you want.

If you really want to go minimal you can use debian. Just make sure you use the testing release or its pretty outdated. Its what ubuntu is based on, and many of the ubuntu configuration / guides will apply to debian too, but there are less packages, and some of them have different names.

Wouldn't really recommend fedora or arch for new users, just less people who use it, less packages than ubuntu / debian.

Stay away from centos or any old as fuck "stable" distros. You are literally running shit from 10 years ago.

Stay away from gentoo or any source based package manager unless you like waiting for things to compile.

Stay away from mint or any of the other bloated shit.

Ubuntu if you're absolutely new, once you learn the ropes you can more easily figure out what works for you and what doesn't and what you really want out of an OS..
DO NOT go for Mint, this is personal experience, I used Mint for years and always had tons of minor issues that I found were non-existent upstream in Ubuntu. Mint does a lot of things in a weird hacky way.

>"Arch is superior."
*Pacman bites xorg.conf*
>"NOOO PACMAN NOOOO, I NEED TO SHOW EVERYBODY MY ANIME WALLPAPER AND TILING WINDOWS."
>*Xorg.conf error, Archtank cant load i3"
>I-I will fix it in no time
>*Drivers sucessfuly loaded, Mintank now activates DE*
>"HA--HA Priopertiary drivers"
>*Cinnamon DE activated, Mintank ready to operate*
>B-UT CINNAMON IS A BLOAT
>"ArchTank meets unknown error, KERNEL PANIC ACTIVATED"

Realistically, choose Ubuntu or Fedora for instant usability. Choose Debian Minimal if you’d like to learn more about setting up a Linux system, or Gentoo I’d you'd like hard-mode. After that, if you wanna dive deeper, give Linux From Scratch (LFS) a go.

Linux is a kernel.

fuck off richard

linux liteif you have shit pc elementary os ifnyou have better thsn shit pc

if you're beginner enough to have to ask, the answer is ubuntu.

Ubuntu if you have a decent laptop, Elementary OS, Xubuntu or Linux Mint if you have a shitty laptop (or if you want to save resources)

install windows 7

retard, just change the de

What about for pirating in a vm?

Ubuntu or Debian testing, but you'll have to install stable and then upgrade to testing first.

In my opinion solus this the best "just werks" normie distro it's a great balance between usability and low resource usage

desu most gtk-based DEs are cursed. I don't know what's up with them, but most GTK software feels like slapped together blast from the past. Case in point, Audacious settings. Devs just didn't care about visuals, it works - it's good enough, ship it. Thing is, nobody who makes GTK software, cares.

I know Audacious can be shipped with Qt support (which is IMO better in terms of looks) and apparently some steps are being made, but it's all just too recent. Debian testing/sid package still features old icons. Stock Gnome/LXDE/XFCE look so-so. MATE looks like something from 2004 too, but it's their feature and MATE is consistent, at least.
