Apple A12 “nearly 2x performance” all all Android SoC; margins off fastest desktop CPUs

anandtech.com/show/13392/the-iphone-xs-xs-max-review-unveiling-the-silicon-secrets/4

>The contrast to the best Android SoCs have to offer is extremely stark – both in terms of performance as well as in power efficiency. Apple’s SoCs have better energy efficiency than all recent Android SoCs while having a nearly 2x performance advantage. I wouldn’t be surprised that if we were to normalise for energy used, Apple would have a 3x performance efficiency lead.

>What is quite astonishing, is just how close Apple’s A11 and A12 are to current desktop CPUs. I haven’t had the opportunity to run things in a more comparable manner, but taking our server editor, Johan De Gelas’ recent figures from earlier this summer, we see that the A12 outperforms a Skylake CPU. Of course there’s compiler considerations and various frequency concerns to take into account, but still we’re now talking about very small margins until Apple’s mobile SoCs outperform the fastest desktop CPUs in terms of ST performance.

One word: Holy. Shit.

Wasted hardware on a fisher toy OS with 0 hardware intensive apps.

Powering that screen is pretty hardware intensive

>a mobile chip eating like 5 watts
>ever coming close to a desktop CPU using 60W+
That's either a revolution or a lie. I think we both know which it is.

Bullshit

Since it's Apple, I'm going for revolution.

they are actually comparing the single thread performance to a 56 thread 165w server cpu

absolute shills

why is normal usage so shit then, compared to some dogshit chinkphones? where does the performance go?

What’s poor about the normal usage?

All that beautiful hardware wasted in gay porn and Instagram.

And yet iOS still feels slow. Incredible.

If that's so then why does the newest iPhone XS max lag so hard compared to chinkshit android?

Attached: 1517160940899.webm (640x360, 2.53M)

I'd be more impressed if they rewrite macOS for ARM and ship macbooks with the AXX or whatever.

Then I'd honestly consider buying a mbp

It's slower at basic things like this. How is this possible even though android is supposed to be worse as well on the software side?

sure
since it's arm let's install windows on it then and see how long it takes to render a video in premiere vs let's say a decade old q6600

ill make the assumption the a12 will finish about a week later

They have ridiculously slow animation for some fucking reason

Because apple can't sustain their performance. The A12 is no doubt fast but it has overheating and thermal throttling problems like all apple processors.

Attached: csm_Foto_21.11.17_13_46_23_039aed3a3d.png (554x1200, 625K)

No they don't, the chips just thermal throttle too quickly. You can tell because the iPhone XS max still beats the note 9 yet it bombs when confronted with the oneplus 6.

why do people still care about the performance of a smartphone in
>2018
it's all fast enough for basic tasks.
what do you do besides facebook and grindr that needs that much performance?

>but still we’re now talking about very small margins until Apple’s mobile SoCs outperform the fastest desktop CPUs in terms of ST performance.
No they don't, gookbench is a terrible benchmark by itself and even worse across different cpu architectures. You're also not taking the thermal throttling into account apple chips suffer from.

My GPU outperforms my CPU in raw performance. Doesn’t mean it translates into anything practically usable.

Reaching the IPC of a decade old x86 chip is not that impressive when you can throw transistors at your design like crazy. Being more energy efficient than a snapdragon 845 is nothing fancy either when you consider that it's fagebbed on 7 instead of 10nm.

>You can now browse FB faster than on a PC!

Golly gee, that's it, I'm throwing my PC into the trash!!

Attached: 1531592268159.jpg (287x373, 25K)

Strange post. Better stuff isn’t impressive because it’s better?

Anandtech use outdate Spec2006 and usijg cooling system for iphone test.

Which part of it is it that you have problems understanding? Just building a wider design to increase IPC is relatively easy but something you can't do to that extent when building server/desktop chips. And fabbing your chip on a better node than the old chips you compare it to is not apples accomplishment at all but TSMCs. And something every future snapdragon, exynos, kirin flagship SoC will use too.

since you ask..
i run ffmpeg inside termux to encode flacs from rutracker into opus to save space
higher performance means i need to wait less until the encoder has finished

THANK YOU BASED APPLE

sounds neat, but 99.99% of the normalfags don't care about flac, since they are using beats headsets anyway.
so why do they care?

HOW WILL THE LAGDROIDS EVER RECOVER?

>He actually thinks a mobile soc is faster then a desktop CPU
Fucking kek

heres some food for thought
>its not optimized
>assets are higher resolution on apple than poodroid

but iphones always have a lower resolution display

>he thinks this

gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s9 -8967.php
>Released 2018, March

>we see that the A12 outperforms a Skylake CPU
i don't give a shit about intel but goybench is a fucking abortion of a benchmarking tool and should be removed

That's great! guess what though, I don't need that kind of performance in a damn phone!

>"lol iphone is so shit it has a dual core and 1gb of ram my android phone has a quad core and 3gb lol welcome to 2012 itards"

>now
>"psh y-yeah who needs that kind of performance in a phone anyway..."

If apple made a vr headset it would shit over ocucklus. They don't though, they made custom silicon to accelerate animated emojis.

>using a smartphone as a thick client

You’re a fucking pretentious retard

Your mom was my thick client last night

I suppose a number of applications which were considered important in the decision didn't support integer vectorization, but were expected to scale well with threading. This is speculation on my part, with no inside knowledge. SPEC 2006 is still considered important for marketing, and has practically no integer vectorization. SPECrate, at least, benefits from multiple cores. Evolution toward a wider group of applications for which platforms will be designed is slow.
Hardware designers recognize the need to prepare for the applications which will be important 5 years in the future, in time to make many of these decisions, but there's a lack of useful data.

software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-isa-extensions/topic/285867

>green posting the one retard in this thread

It sucks that apple have this kind of processing power. they should make sbc, motherboards and other shit rather than one laptop and desktop per year

Nobody would buy it desu. A lot of people would be turned of by the constant overheating and thermal throttling.

Seriously its wasted in a phone. Most phones are overpowered for what people actually do with them. Its not an apple exclusive problem.

>this phone can now run at 666 niggahertz!
>use it to load whatsapp and instagram
what the fuck's the point? explain yourselves phonefags

The closest optimal mcpu target for kryo/sd835,845 is cortex-a57, cortex-a53 is for power efficiency and not performance, and yes it does make a huge difference. Not to mention that llvm is shit when it comes to performance. Rerun the test with linaro's gcc and target cortex-a57 instead.

>Andreet wants to move the goalposts
Typical.

iToddlers use it to try to justify their horrible financial decisions. I would personally never spend more than $200 a fucking phone.

Using in order cpu compiler instead of out order a57?

How is it a shill when they're real events?

github.com/llvm-mirror/llvm/blob/master/lib/Target/AArch64/AArch64SchedA57.td

Autor must use A53 for every processor or specific optimization for every cpu.

You can market something real or against something you fucker.

A shill is a paid marketer who breaks the law by not revealing their employers in their marketing materials.

In Xcode, Apple ships a closed-source version of clang, which in turn has a closed-source version of LLVM (it seems like Xcode 9's LLVM forks off of LLVM 5?). Apple's clang/LLVM generally includes stability enhancements that would otherwise potentially cause problems for developers. I'm not sure what the benefits are of using Rust's current LLVM, e.g. it can be newer than Apple's, but Apple's clang is a really safe bet and seems a good thing to use by default. Some of these platform-specific issues can manifest in weird and very difficult to diagnose ways, e.g. random restarts, that it would be good to save developers from.

github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/48833
Private Clang compiler high optimizers for Apple cpu

Right but he's not going "buy X android" he's just showing a very underreported problem if iPhone battery failures. Would I be a shill for stainless steel cookware if I showed multiple cast iron thermal readings showing a cold spot in the center?

He's not even shilling just saying iPhones aren't worth it for the price which everyone here unanimously agrees. Even IF iPhones were faster than $500 chink trash phones it still doesn't justify their exorbitant pricing.

Yes because Samsung was caught posting negative things about other brands to drive them to themselves.

ARM cores are a LOT smaller than x86. This translates directly into either massively higher core count (server chips) or tiny power usage.

Meant for

>Apple is magically literally doubling the performance versus a close competitor in the same field, putting similar amounts into R&D of the same technology
>And also about to overtake physically larger, less heat constrained desktop chips that can draw several times as much power

FP literally BP

iOS is so limited and locked down, and unless you're going to compromise your security and install a chinese botnet app store you're not even going to have basic stuff like Clover.

I guess games will tax the processor, but mobile games are made for the lowest common denominator so they won't push the limits of the A12, and even if they did it would heat up.

>goybench said the A12 got 27k GoyBoyPoints vs the 32k GoyBoyPoints on my *GateBookPro with Spectre-Insyde
Thats it, it proves it Apple is the GOAT tech company. It couldn't be benchmark fixing and comparing apples to oranges.
This is how they are trying to justify putting ARM chips in all the new MacBooks and shit, by pushing a huge positive PR campaign.

>If that's so then why does the newest iPhone XS max lag so hard compared to chinkshit android?
Word.
