Almost forgot during installation check the "YES install proprietary drivers" This is the most important part you will have a bad time if you don't have all the proprietary drivers.
There is a possibility you will need to dick around with drivers to do this press the start button (it says menu however its the same) type in "driver" and you should see a icon for driver management. If there are graphical problems simply change the driver by selecting a different item in the GUI menu. I have like 3 driver versions.
You also notice how fast and precise the search is unlike win crap.

To get software for the system there is a thing that looks like a "app store"(or steam only for software) only you don't pay for things only download them for free. The thing is named a "Package Manager" and it has a brown box icon. I suggest getting KDElive in it its a video editor in it.
Oh and there you can install also steam.
I did never try to use MS Office in Linux because I see no need I can write my documents in Libre writer and everyone can open them because Libre office is also for windows. Libre can open word documents however I think some advanced formatting has issues like making margins 3 millimeters more or something.
For windows software compatibility attempts there is wine its hit and miss I can run some windows programs in my linux system however its mostly for games.
Try using it, also wine sometimes stops working with newer version of windows software etc. Wine is a emulation layer that tries to emulate the windows API. Then there is "play on linux" for more hardcore attempts at emulation.

Take the win10 HDD: 1) Don't ever boot it! 2) There are SATA to USB cables you can attach every HDD to another computer like every external hard drive. 3) Use this cable to reed the data from the HDD to a Linux PC and copy it. 4) If its not there try a professional recovery service.
Also did you think about using a computer with windows 7 to transfer the files to? Or Win XP? You realize you where supposed to jump the windows10 ship a long time ago you are paying the price of using win10.

I switched to Linux recently after blocking Windows 10 updates for two years. I once came home on Friday to a Windows that had rendered itself unbootable. The drive was perfectly readable, all my files were fine (I had backups anyway), but I could not make it boot and had to reinstall. That's the only time I've ever been unable to boot a system, and I've done some stupid shit and fucked up my own systems a lot.
I run Windows 10 in a VM purely for games (GPU passthrough) and the very few applications that need it. Some games run in WINE but I've found performance to be very poor in many cases, to the point where my host's 1080ti underperforms my guest's 1080. It's nice only spinning up Windows when I need it and keeping it muzzled so it can't shit $RECYCLE.BIN$ and desktop.inis all over my NAS (though Linux file managers like to create .Trash-$UID, which is only slightly better).

The point is rebooting takes time and you need to wrap everything up before rebooting. That's not how you get the job done. Dualbooting windows and linux for work will degrade into simply using windows and never booting in linux.

I fortified myself after learning of win10 bought the last most powerful hardware nativity supported for win7 and got myself the last copy (they seriously needed to order it form a warehouse) of win8 pro.
I'm on Linux mostly so its not a problem I'm more concerned with my privacy and companies forcing me to use win10 to use their games however system bricking is not a problem because there is absolutely nothing of interest in the windows (7 actually however I don't trust MS) HDD other then games. And everything can be reinstalled.
I never expected to seriously tell people to move their files because windows will delete them, I always was thinking about win10 spyware sending files to the NSA. This is a new era we are in.
