Most of them are probably backronyms, where someone comes up with a word first and then tries to make an acronym afterward. This was most likely the case for Linux, which was obviously just a portmanteau of Linus and Unix. But aside from that, nerds like recursion and recursive acronyms are easier to come up with because you already have one of the words.
