What is even the point of having technology as a hobby? Consumer technology has more or less peaked. Everything is currently getting worse and more restrictive.

incel!

what a cute girl, she looks so pure, i wish i could see her nude

This.

Her name is Taylor Swift. You can thank me later.

nice clock ahmed

kek

that's like asking what's the point of having ham radio as a hobby
if someone enjoys something, let them enjoy it don't try to dissect why they enjoy it. if you don't understand then no amount of explanation is likely to make you understand

>electrical tape on the hub so you don't short it with shields
Fucking relatable.

But for what it's worth finding my old Arduino and figuring out how to work with ATTinys helped me build my own keyboard and start futzing with electronics again.

I think that's what happens in many markets

once the utility of it peaks, they try to turn it into an entertainment medium, decreasing its utility/worth/respectability, etc

productivity from computers (at work) peaked around 2000-2003

after that it's just distractions, distractions, distractions. the smartphone created masses of zombies out of the population

>Consumer technology has more or less peaked.
I was about to disagree with you, but then the next sentence put it into perspective.

The point is to counteract the forces that are currently reaming us right up the asshole. It's a way to liberate yourself from the shackles of modern-day technological capitalism.
A bit like becoming a hermit, but you can keep living in modern day society.

The point of "having technology as a hobby" is that technology enthusiasts don't let themselves dictate what's good and what's not by big corporations.
Any restriction can be bypassed if you're good enough, and if it can't be, you can always create stuff from scratch.

Agreed.

Exactly.

>consumer technology
stopped reading right there when i realized you didn't know how to build your own hard/firm/software and have knowledge only limited to what horseshit is available to the masses.

I mostly agree.
Just look at the pic you posted. Windows 2000 was the last Windows OS truly designed for professional use: after that, home use took precedence.
We are effectively using 10 times the resources we were using 15 years ago to do the same exact shit, except with "pretty" interfaces.

this

How do I learn to do shit like this? I feel like a brainlet every time for not even knowing where to start.

>productivity from computers (at work) peaked around 2000-2003

Only if you're a Windows user. macOS is more versatile, productive, and useful today than it's ever been, while Windows has either stood still or regressed massively since 2000. The Win10 UI alone makes it a tacky, cartoonish nightmare to use.

wow, you made that led blink? that's friggin cool man

Theres a shitton of tutorials on the web for personal projects, learn theory of circuits too and make some little project to start, theres circuit simulators too if you dont want to make real stuff

See I need help with building my own hardware

You somehow missed all of the productivity features introduced in newer Windows versions, like Powershell, improved Task Manager, start menu search, file search, etc.

Just keep in mind that electronics has a fuckload of gotchas.
Like building an H-bridge only to find out that you either need to mix NPN/PNP transistors or use a MOSFET.
And then getting a MOSFET only to find out that all of its terminology is inverted from what it normally is, so the source is negative and the drain positive.
Or just the idea of common ground for electronics communication. That's mentioned barely anywhere, despite being such an elementary aspect of tinkering with electronics.

>adding a proper terminal, htop, and search justifies exponential increases in resource use

And yet Linux still uses sh as the lowest common denominator, holding back the entire platform.

At least Windows moves forward.

You also forgot all of the stability improvements. I haven't seen a bluescreen in ages, outside of freak occurrences.

Yes, and we weren't supposed to be flying for another few million years.

you mean like the mysterious disappearance of home/work group? it'd be a different story if they'd backported the new networking protocol to older but still supported windows but nah, fuck us right

>What is even the point of having technology as a hobby?
Because it's fun.
Don't use devices build part of them, this is real technology.
If you just like using your smartphone, you like graphic cards or whatever, you don't like technology you're nothing more than a consumer that live with his time.

This is riley reid.

Yes, and we were also supposed to be colonizing the galaxy several decades ago.

you realize that CPUs are consumer hardware right? I don't think many people here are capable of making their own CPU.

If you wanted to live absolutely independently from corporations (and yet enjoy electronics/computers), it's doable but it takes a lot of compromises.

>implying third parties didnt already resolve all these issues in much more elegantly coded ways
