Are tablets dead?

They're not dead but they are becoming less and less popular. They were "reasonably sized" for media consumption but nowadays smartphones are bigger and fulfill requirements for most people.

They are also not the best devices to do any serious work on. Good Windows tablets are generally more expensive than the average decent laptop. The Surface Go being a little bit above "average" still pales in comparison with any laptop its price and it's generally a slow piece of garbage (just not as slow as other tablets below its price). Devices with Android are not worth spending over 300 bucks anymore.

I use a big old android tab as an ssh terminal and admin tool. Probably wouldn't spend big money on a new one but it's useful for what it is.

they are just oversized smartphones

I'm buying another one, but it's purpose specific. Planning to use it as a dedicated remote for an htpc.
I had a couple note laptops, but sold them, because they really were useless if you had a laptop, and smartphone.

>Note tablets

id use it for home automation, OBD to my car...um....maybe arduino things... or like to look up manuals while i do work.

but i wouldnt go out of my way to replace my laptop with one. I owned one back in the day and it was a cheap piece of shit (just like buying any budget mobile phone these days) and broke so not going to bother.

wank factor

I just wanna buy an 8" one so that I can put it beside my computer while I work and run YouTube/podcasts. It's also nice to read magazines and books.

I’m browsing this now using an iPad mini,

Fight me....

I rarely even use my Toshiba Encore WT8A anymore. Well, it is useful when testing firewall rules, but other than that, not even touching it, as I'm a pcfag.

No, but they're not going to be for the average person like they used to be. I bought mine specifically for screen drawing and manga reading. Everyone else I know that has a tablet fits what said about purpose specific too. Disabled/bedridden people prefer them for web browsing too, and they're still way cheaper than laptops.

user, why not get a small USB screen instead? Just curious. Or do you want to walk around with it?

Yes.

enjoy your aids

My tablet is doing just fine. Watching stuff on it every night.

I've been using my Nexus 7 for years and years until a few months ago when it finally started to slow down. Now i have a Lenovo P8, which is probalby the closest thing to a N7 succesor. I use tablet mainly for reading books or manga, check emails and shit in bed.

I travel a lot. I wish I had a permanent place to stay, then I would just get a second monitor. But still, reading PDFs is more comfortable from a tablet in my opinion.

Fair enough. I can't recommend my Encore, as it was chunky and heavy from the get-go and I also added a cover, making it more chunky. But I could use it perfectly with a hacked touchpad and a small BT keyboard for document writing (while being in college) and programming.

The best thing I can recommend, aside from the Surface 3 or Surface Go is an Asus TransformerBook (they seem quite nice from video reviews). But I never used one for a long period, so I can't say for sure...

Nope, they're being transformed. Ever heard of Microshit Surface?

same. swear to god the make the android slower with every version. faggots. never update.

Apple cornered the market and phones got big.

Yeah Android tablets are dead in the age of 6"+ phones.

I still use my Windows tablet with wacom digitalizer fairly often though.

yes

Good for ebooks, casual browsing and media consumption
I use an iPad Pro for note taking and browsing Jow Forums (right now)

Depends on what you're getting one for. For media consumption and memes, one of the new amazon fire tablets might be good for that or get an ipad.
Samsung released some new tablets this year and they're good too.

As for college save yourself some money and get a laptop, the only tablet good for college right now is the surface go

You're going on an overseas trip (somewhere safe, somewhere dangerous, doesn't matter - assume safe to simplify things)
What do you take with you to entertain you in transit/nights in the hotel etc., what do you take to book further tickets/hotel rooms/vid call home etc.,?

>A) large, top end smartphone?
or
B) your older but functional smartphone + a tablet of some decent quality?

my iPad isn’t dead

>Good
>Windows
Hi, Pajeet.

Android doesn't have a tiny bit less pajeet on it and you know it.

They were dead from the beginning.

Replaced by 2 in 1 laptops

Posting on a tablet right now.

I am not taking the side of Google Android.

Tablets aren't dead, there's a large but flat market for ipads and a small equally flat market for "cheap imitation ipads" i.e. android tablets.
Personally, I find android tablets absolutely indispensible as portable computers for managing life related shit, watching downloaded shit and reading documents; for which a phone screen is too small, even if you have the most oversized phablet you can lay your hands on.

>surface pro
>can write and edit notes on them with pen
>can store handwritten documents on OneNote
>can type out a report on LaTeX if I dont want handwritten
>can run Mathematica or Python
>internet access without shitty mobile websites
>runs just like a normal laptop
>Muh animu and Netflix/Hulu on a good size screen

I love this thing. More expensive than I believe they should be but one of the better purchases I've made.

Then what side? We're talking about tablets here. If you're going to suggest using a linux distro on a Windows tablet.... like nigga, have you tried it on a surface pro? I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemies.

Nah, people just don't upgrade to newer tablets as much as they do with phones.

I've seen people who still use their 2nd gen ipads and 2013 nexus 7's.

Enjoy the short time you have

>like nigga
You don't have to write in ebonics. You clearly listen to too much RAP "music". RAP stands for "Retards Attempt Poetry".
>Then what side?
Free software.

No real reason to spend extra 200-300 bucks when majority of people already own a phone which does the same thing and is more practical than a tablet.

>RAP stands for "Retards Attempt Poetry".

The last time I heard this I was in middle school where the "rock" kids tried to explain how their music was better. Rap isn't music, it's one of the elements used to make hip-hop music, much like how rock hinges on electrical instruments to create its sound.

Your granma is dead

>Rap isn't music
I agree. Such a label is too good for that nonsense. It is a tool of Jewish cultural subversion.

>Jow Forums-baiting

nice try

Dude want to have some functional tablet for media consumption and shit and you're suggesting to install linux. Fuck off and get out of your room.

That is a deflection.

Replaced by windows 10 tablets/2 in 1.

Most tablets in the world run Linux.

android*, which already supports touch devices since day one. Please tell me how your gentoo® will run as good as android on a tablet

And on top of it, a system that is mostly anti-freedom unless you severely cripple it and make it not so convenient to use.

iPad still dominating the market. Windows tablets are the new netbook and have their own target demographic so they're doing okay. Android tablets are for the poorfag market and no manufacturer really give a shit about making flagship android tablet anymore.

Google stopped giving a shit about tablets since android 4.4

But I don't want a giant glass brick phone that you need to carry in a purse.

Nexus 7 guy here.
Lineage OS works great with it, if you're looking to speed it up.

I just want cheap 12 inch tablet with good screen to read pdf magazines and hentai. There's literally zero options on the market.

thier comfy for reading in bed.

I own a nexus 7 and a Lenovo tab 4, I use them for text books, pdf readingm and general media devices. I also got a keyboard to use it for writing documents, and a digital pen for drawing. I think they're really useful. But I get that most people would just get a phone. For me, tablets are like ultraportable computers. BTW I use lineage.

are you even trying to present an argument?

Learn to read.

Mi Pad 4 says otherwise

>Android tablets are for the poorfag market and no manufacturer really give a shit about making flagship android tablet anymore.
There's Samsung but their flagship is expensive and the non-flagship has worse specs than regular iPad and other android tablet like the Xiaomi/Lenovo tablet.

Fucken nexus 7 reporting in. Its only for occasional coffee table browsing, this thing with Lineage has aged really well.

My shield tablet only gets used any more when i go on trips to watch movies, the hdmi out is really handy for that too

Just get a thinkpad tablet :^)

What's this, 2006?

What's the best comic book sized USB screen out there?

i'll buy it off you for a reasonable price
second gen, right?

12" was never a sensible option for a tablet, and very few got made. 2nd hand Galaxy Note 12.2 go for high prices.

I use one for manga reading, YouTube and VNs.

It's convenient.

Yeah but it's crazy how there are no 12" comicbook hentai magazine readers out there. Like the size of an ipad pro but exclusively meant for reading/colorful images, maybe video

I am planning to buy either tab pro or new galaxy tab s.
Tab pro is windows 10, larger screen but lower res, tab s android smaller scree but higher res .i swear samsung is doing this on purpose, just release a goddamn 4k oled tablet, I dont care what os

I sometimes use my old Kindle hd6 to read

I've never had a tablet, but looking at an ipad to take on business trips, play mobage on, and maybe read some mango. I hear most of the weeb games are better optimized on ios, plus I have a bunch of old itunes gift cards laying around.

The Asus 2013 one.

that's the second gen, good choice although I've heard some have had issues, if you haven't then good

Outside of using it for some kind of graphic design, or drawing degenerate loli art, yea tablets have been dead for awhile now. I own one and i've not touched it in months because i have a phone that does everything the tablet does, and is more portable. If i need more screen space i'll hop on my workstation.

i have a 10 inch on my coffee table i use to manage my security cameras and chromecast to the tv but that's about it

Not sure if the Surface Pro counts as a tablet, but I get a decent amount of use out of mine
I use it for digital art on-the-go and reading mostly (though admittedly an e-ink reader would be better for the latter) and watching movies in the bath

I would definitely never advocate it as any kind of pc replacement, and it doesnt compare to drawing on paper or my wacom, but for a very portable general-purpose tablet, its a pretty decent little machine.

yes but only because smartphones are getting bigger.

phones and tablets are dead.

at least until their is a decent OS for them that can do every thing a computer can.

its not possible to live in a hostel with just a phone or tablet and crack software and games to run on that very tablet you need a small windows pc basicaly. once OS can sustain them self like that ill care about them.

I just want a tablet with this spec

>not as expensive as surface pro
>around 12 or 13 inch screen
>at least 1080p
>around intel hd 620 graphics
>around 6 hours battery life if not gaming
>at least 1 usb port that isnt micro
>120gb ssd

Cant fucking find one.

There is a beastly thinkpad tablet with a spec better than this but its like 2 grand.

Id be interested in the top of the line surface go, if it didnt have a faggoty ass 10 inch screen.

There is an oled samsung thats basically a surface pro 4 in spec but it has no standard USB.

The higher end tablets can, like the high end surface pros, but they are crazy expensive.

You can get standard 13 inch laptops with ok spec for about 500-600, but a tablet with the same spec is almost double that price.

They're not dead. Just morphing. iPad is becoming better suited for different use cases than originally intended, and the Surface is barely even a tablet. It's more of a laptop with a detachable base.
Android tablets are dead though. Google is replacing them with Chrome OS tablets, which are also DOA.

You can play fortnite on an iphone

Your argument is moot

iPad Pro is the best device for surfing the web,

Yes!

Same here

If there would be a Nexus 7 2018 I would buy it instantly just for the battery life and performance upgrade.

The autorotation is often not working anymore on my one, otherwise everything still works great. With an overclock kernel on top of LOS it is still pretty usable.

Buy one of them e-ink readers. Boox makes them.
There's an iPad eDP adapter that allows you to use its 9.7-inch screen as a DP monitor.

Fucking Apple Sheep.

used Surface Pro 4 with i5 and 8GB RAM

>use tablet
>instantly slow and bogged down by unavoidable pajeet bloatware despite being relatively high spec
>options are to buy an even more expensive tablet for pajeet to bloat up in a year or an ipad which will work so long as i dont break it

My iPad Pro is faster than a 8 core processor for browsing Jow Forums.

Depends on use case. For simple web browsing and watching some videos they are nice. Prefer it over a phone unless I’m really on the move. Of course, there is stuff a laptop or desktop can do that a dinky tablet can’t.

I keep thinking i'd like an inexpensive device i can chuck in a bag and not worry about. Most cheap 11" laptops are too bulky, but something like a GPD pocket or Surface Go is totally perfect.

just dont update then

Why have a tablet when my phone is 6"?

All tablets are good for is watching porn

t. people who actually think ipad aren't tablets
