If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Install CRUX

how do I install arch linux on a laptop with no ethernet connection?

Attached: 1513938069623.jpg (346x450, 22K)

sed statement

Use the "ip" and "dhcpd" commands to set your wifi?

netctl profile bro haha works for me

Which package provides /usr/share/dict/words?

Sounds like dictd.

Look at those virgins

Look at this MS telemarketer.

i've never used arch before but maybe this will work:

/etc/conf.d/net:
modules_wlp3s0="wpa_supplicant"
config_wlp3s0="dhcp"

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
ap_scan=1

then run:
wpa_passphrase %essid% %password% >> /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

/etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0 start

or you could use a netctl profile and not be a nigger.

wifi-menu also comes with the base package. a literal gui.

:(

shit I forgot this was frendly thread sorry

i want a gf someone please send help

Don't listen to the other fag, classic Arch was way better than systemd bullshit they've put now.

:)

it's ok we're all friendly here

This explanation made me want to rescue the init scripts from old Arch, wish I knew which repository they put their old scripts.

I want to try easing into GNU/Linux by dual booting my laptop with Debian (I'm sick of how slow oracle vm gets), but I was wondering what the whole systemd issue I read on the wiki is about.

equery says sys-apps/miscfiles

the opensuse kgpg tool won't start and I can't use it to make one
the wallet keeps turning off my wifi prompting me to use a gpg key and it's extremely obnoxious

I am confused.
I have a directory owned by me and set to 0777 but when i mount something into it it becomes owned by root and i have to sudo and shit to use it, why? is there any way to keep the original owner and permissions after mount?

>using sudo to mount
>not knowing who is the owner
Maybe try using chown instead of chmod.

Is there a backport of g++-7.0-aarch64-linux-gnu or higher available anywhere? I'm trying to get something compiled on travis, and it was working fine with g++-4.8-aarch64-linux-gnu, but now I'm using some C++17 so I need a newer compiler.

Using Ubuntu 14.04. Can't compile g++ since there's a compilation time limit.

what are you talking about son? only root can mount. if i try to mount without root i get an error

Just do a chown after you mount.

If your using fstab try setting the uid and gui to your user. Not sure how to do that with plain mount

Tether your phone.

Actually he can do "mount NAME" if he has that in the fstab and he'll get to mount like he wants.

So what happened about the coc

I find it funny how I'm constantly seeing people buying up new laptops left and right (including new ThinkPads), spending a boat load of money, all so that they can transfer music to their phones faster, play video games, and load up standard webpages on machines which will never be used to their full potential.

Meanwhile I'm still rocking my almost 8 year old i7-2640M x220 that I bought used on eBay for 120USD. Modded BIOS for 16GB RAM @ 1866MHz w/ 11-11-11-32 timing, 1TB mSATA SSD @ 3Gbps, 256GB 2.5" SATA SDD @ 6Gbps, Bluetooth 4.0 daughter card, original 6cell battery getting ~5 hours with normal use after kernel and OS optimization.

It's certainly not the baddest laptop in the ring, but I often emulate a dozen routers in GSN3 and run two virtual machines, with standard media and network programs running, all simultaneously, while staying under and 75% load and never getting anywhere close to half of RAM.

I know a lot of people buy new hardware because they want to play new games, and that's fine, but it's crazy how functional an almost 8 year old laptop still is, depending on your needs. Sure, I can't play boot up The Witcher on my x220 (without an external GPU), but I can play the hell out of the original Half-Life (fav game of all time) and most Source engine games, Daggerfall and Morrowind (second fav) and most importantly, I can do the work that I actually need get done.

Just did a spring cleaning of my files and felt like ranting. Also that keyboard... ooh man.

Same.

I miss minimalist threads :(

What are some good markup/prototype programs for app/web development? Something like Dreamweaver, Sketch, Figma, etc. but free and for GNU/Linux.

It's the only thing really keeping me from switching full time. Mac OSX offers a ton of dev tools. It seems GNU/Linux is still stuck in Vim/eMacs which is fine for elitists but not for people with jobs.

People don't expect quality so we don't get quality. That's why 90% of the laptops shipped out these days are barely optimized to run Windows 10 alone. I got shilled into buying a HP laptop from Walmart because it was a i5 with 8GB of memory for only $400. Shit barely ran Windows 10. Works fine for Arch but I don't understand why these companies ship out all of these laptops running Celerons and shit knowing damn well it'll barely function with Windows bloat.

Brackets is similar to Atom and Sublime but dedicated to webdev, there was something similar to dreamweaver called blue something, cant remember exact name.

Aptana is the only thing I can think of that comes close to what those services offer.

GNU/Linux was never really designed for web applications development. Nor is it really an environment for programming per say. It's primary function is for running servers and network/database security. What dev environments we do have aren't going to be what you can get on other platforms. We mostly run scripts and automation/maintenance functioning tasks. At least until the huge influx of people like here on Jow Forums coming to GNU/Linux making distributions for regular desktop use.

PyCharm is pretty popular for Python. Brackets and Atom are good but bloat and extremely optimized. Sublime Text offers good file/project management but I don't believe it offers any tools for design.

>was never really designed for web applications development
Devops want a word with you.
>Nor is it really an environment for programming per say.
Dennis Ritchie wants a word with you.

Dreamweaver works in WINE appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=26222

Devops are Macbook cucks. C these days is mostly used in OS development and embedded systems. Dennis is dead. He didn't develop Unix to be a programmers tool.

Just to be clear, mac users do use many of the same cli tools we use, as for gui we do have stuff like brackets and works fine, is just than your average Linux user prefers the cli but that doesnt mean we dont have fancy tools, just means we are not afraid of going straight to barebones applications. Also, poor Ritchie, C and Unix were hand in hand creations, so to this day many programmers prefer Linux even for programming Windows applications.

Not many companies are willing to go through the hassle of cross compiling and developing their product in a OS they aren't developing for. I've worked for a Windows only project for a company in Texas and they were Windows only.

I've always worked for Windows based software companies. I wouldn't volunteer to go through the added process of cross-piling.

If you do native I get why you say it but these days most people work with interpreted languages, at least the small jobs like webdev. There is a reason you hear mac users have actual jobs and is not because they are working with objective-c.

Best distro for XFCE in your opinion anons?

It's "Xfce".

How is mint for a laptop?

Attached: 1538915501900.jpg (601x678, 55K)

Do the emacs people use emacs -nw or do you use the builtin GUI?

i like fedora more than xubuntu

reddit says mint's xfce edition is good but i haven't tried it

I think any distro is good for Xfce, it's minimal enough. I myself run Manjaro and I quite like it.

Attached: screenFetch-2018-10-09_13-45-19.png (1920x1080, 341K)

Install it, don't listen to anti-systemd people for now. Once you get a hold of it, install Devuan and compare for yourself. I like systemd and have no problems with it as a regular user, but the crowd here disagrees with me.

Why does linux have a web server? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TUX_web_server

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

*tips fedora*

One of my drives is mounted as read only for some reason.

How do I fix that?

Which filesystem? If it's NTFS, then boot Windows back and shut it down properly for the drives to unmount.

Oh right I had hibernated Windows some time ago.
Thought it wouldn't affect the torrent dumpster drive.

Trying to get unlimited bash history following this stackoverflow.com/a/19533853

but for some reason despite the timestamps in my history file are showing up as epoch time
how do I make it display as human time?

would it be wise to switch from Fedora KDE to OpenSUSE KDE

I have an SSH private key created using the 'new' format (using the -o option in ssh-keygen). Using ssh-keygen, can I convert this private key to the old format? If so, how?

Most people don't know shit about computers. They use it for 2-3years, gets loaded with malware, disk only has 5%capacity, dust gathers on the insides, etc etc,... so after 2 years they go : "it's probably too old, i need a new one." And they buy a fucking new one because maybe, just maybe, we are too rich for our own good.
Idk if i make a lot of sense.

guys, any help here? pic related my system.

installed using manjaro architect installation, chose i3 as my window manager. made a very minimal install.

when i connect my thunderbolt->hdmi cable to my macbook nothing comes out on the tv, no video output.

anyone got any clue as to what i should do? im pretty lost desu, google search returns everything except what i need

Attached: manjaro.png (832x401, 65K)

type in wifi-menu

Any i3 fags on?
Is there anyway I can have a dwm-like auto layout thing where it automatically gives me a big master window on the left and 3 or more slaves on the right of the screen without me having to manually v and h split?
I'm currently using
for_window [class=".*"] split toggle

which works ok with 3 windows (one master and 2 slaves) but it ends up giving you more of a fibonacci thing than what dwm has.

Attached: 1538962596493.jpg (2448x3264, 1.42M)

wow bro you're so cool and unique
how many years of technological training did you undergo to master your laptop like that?
mind if I post that reddit? I REALLY need the karma
*nods respectfully towards you*

you need to start the fucking monitor dingus
type in man xrandr and read it
if you're too dumb just install lxrandr and use that

*drowns in pussy*

I have a newer thinkpad with only displayport out, so I bought pic related to adapt to my TV. Unfortunately, I can't get my sound to come through the TV. Should I expect sound at all through such a cable? I'm on NixOS btw.

Attached: 41v w7qyPrL._AC_SY400_.jpg (440x400, 22K)

use xrandr for the display and then pavucontrol to change the output device
that's just fucking common sense dude

Yeah the display works correctly, but no matter what sink I set with pavucontrol, there's no sound.

post the last tab from pavucontrol

From what i understand, zram gives you more ram by using your cpu right? will that affect performance on the cpu and does it decrease battery life on a laptop?

sound over displayport?

Also all the HDMI options for sound sinks say (Unplugged)

Attached: tumblr_nb8apaWNnZ1trdgvio1_1280.png (783x1044, 823K)

Mini-displayport to be precise. Can it exist?

pic related

Attached: Screenshot_2018-10-09_09-54-30.png (1920x1080, 72K)

keep it plugged in and restart the pulse server or just restart your PC and see if it gets detected

Attached: Screenshot_Firefox_20181009-155602.png (1080x1920, 142K)

sounds like, if zram is used for swap, you can fit more data into swap, so that's like having more RAM, i guess. it's enabled on lubuntu 13.10 and forward, apparently, if you want to try it easily.

i'm assuming it would affect CPU and thus battery, but i don't know by how much.

what profiling tool do i get to verify that my changes to a program actually make it more efficient?

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, please tell me that pic is fake

Attached: 1538422752555.jpg (1506x1444, 538K)

same here, wtf is that?

aren't they in economic hell right now?
why they fuck are they protesting for abortion?

This. Don't fall for LF propaganda.

Because thots are fucking stupid

And listen to this: They want the goverment to pay for the abortions! yay!

Again, thots are fucking stupid

Attached: 1537984916356.png (500x488, 322K)

Restarting pulse server did nothing, rebooting, though, fixed the whole setup, and it even works when I unplug and plug back in. Thank you sir.

WTF source?

linux.com/what-is-linux

>only root can mount
not with fuse

Would it be worth it to use zram on a laptop with a modern atom processor and 2gb ram that would be mainly used to web browsing or would it affect battery performance too much?
