What are your reasons for using Windows?

How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?

*autistic screeching*

You don't have to. All these supposed Linux users are just running them in a VM under Windows.

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
I got tired of switching back, and forth.

I wouldn't.

Windows automatically cleans your home directory. It's a built-in feature of Windows Update. No Linux distro has this feature yet

im sadly not - my rice is really running on bare metal - and i enjoy it (i also hate being autistic, so its sad)

I would post reasons for using Windows but the latest update deleted them all.

Force of habit and i wouldn't.

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
No one has been able to convince me that GNU/Linux distros are worth using over Windows 7.

>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
I wouldn't. If it works for them, what's the point of wasting time learning something new?

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
I need it for muh gaymes, but also for windows-only engineering software.
>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
You don't. Live and let live.

It's the only OS properly supported on my laptop.

Get a ThinkPad

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
Software compatibility.
Literally nothing else. Windows is shit. Unfortunately the purpose of an OS is to run software. Linux simply does not run all the software i want to use.

>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?

Why would i want to subject someone else who clearly doesn't use Windows software to use this trash? I wouldnt be using it myself if i didn't need to.

That's what I did.

Music production. I can get FL Studio and LMMS working in Linux, but not all the plugins.

Have you tried installing GNU/Linux on it?

Rarely anyone uses Linux without Windows in some form like VM or Wine. As much as I would like Linux to be a viable alternative for everything it simply isn't.

Reaper has a Linux build now

Reaper is fucking shit.
Bitwig is better.

I mean lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that linux does not have. You have those two buttons in linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os

There isn't anything from windows in wine.

Seething

Mostly games
>inb4 manchild
I use Linux on my laptop but I'm getting very near to switching to Linux full time on my desktop as well, I don't play new games that much and most of the games I do play work on Linux. Some day in the future I won't use Windows

i just started a computing degree half the people on my course hate linux, can't be bothered to install it or use macs and have no idea how to code in them.

It came "free" with my laptop.

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
gaming is still pretty sketchy on ganoo + linux and bsd
pretty much everything else i don't care about or can work around since it's not hard to run a windows vm, but gaming in a vm is less than ideal, even with passthrough.

>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
i wouldn't
in an ideal world i wouldn't be locked into using windows, but i like pc gaming and that means i either use windows or have a worse experience. i'm not big on windows, although a lot of the problems i have from it are a direct result of microsoft being faggots: the ux fuckups in windows 8, the update fuckups in windows 10, etc. if a viable nt-based alternative was allowed to exist and compete, i'd probably opt for that over either windows or linux.

Steam Proton, dude

Better support on my thinkpad

ThinkPad ThinkPad? ThinkPad ThinkPad! Thinkpad ThinkPad? ThinkPad Thinkpad!

A lot of stuff works on WINE/PlayOnLinux/Lutris.

A lot of the software I use is easier to run in Windows or not available under GNU/Linux. I also dual-boot with GNU/Linux though.

I would not convince someone to use an OS that they don't want to use.

I see no reason for it to be some constant back and forth OS battle either. People should just use what they want/need.

Gaming is literally the one and only reason to keep a Windows installation. I don't know, maybe it's possible to run most games on Win/Mac nowadays, but I can't be arsed. After a 12 hour workday, I want to fire up the machine and play some games without fiddling. Everything else is cloud-based these days anyway.

But you use it on Linux to run Windows programs.

I will switch to Linux when I can run all of the following programs without any workaround :

IBM Rational Rhapsody for System Engineers
H3C Cloud Lab
Cisco Packet Tracer
GNS 3
Cisco VPN Client v5
Forcepoint VPN Client
MS Visio (fuck draw.io btw)

I guess that won't be possible anytime soon.

Alright, I'll take the bait.

>You have a godlike user interface [on Windows]
Man, as far as interfaces go, Windows is absolute trash. Yes, everything is GUI-driven rather than requiring CLI knowledge, but the difference is that on Windows, if you want to do some micro-level tweaking, you have to edit registry keys, which I think are more difficult to wrap your head around than typing in a command. Also, some things just can't be done on Windows: I've been wanting to retask my microphone jack to a headphone jack, which works perfectly on my Linux partition, but Windows has no option (nor existing external program) to reproduce that functionality. The only reason I use Windows still is because of muh music software, but with Windows 7 losing support soon, I'm very tempted to just switch to Mac just so I can easily do things without dealing with a dual boot.

i'm a college student and some of the classes I'm taking use software that doesn't work well or at all on linux, so i needed to have a windows laptop

Literally just TegraRCM Gui

But my main os is OSX

>muh casino simulator games

Attached: muhgames.jpg (536x582, 124K)

QubesOS FTW

Because it works flawlessly, is very fast, doesn't need constant configuration and debugging, never breaks, has the most applications, and some windows native APIs are nice to work with.

For sensitive work I just use an offline machine.

>Because it works flawlessly
lol

t. edgelord who uses the deep web and thinks hes cool

>make someone switch to Windows
>lists benefits of Linux
?

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
Because I recently got a strong laptop and seriously you Need Windows to benefit from every shit from it
Also sometimes you got broken drivers on linux and that's actually a deal breaker
I just got Windows to werk all shit i need

>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
Linux is only good on server
But if you really want to have linux desktop os
Stick to distro that have persistence mode
I'm actually using Kali with persistence and I actually didn't have problems with drivers

Because I like having compatibility with people outside the linux cult

Because it's required for many jobs in many sectors of many industries (including my own).

I wouldn't recommend anything to anybody. I live in America and I believe in freedom. I don't get upset when somebody holds different opinions and beliefs than me. This is a subjective subject. We aren't arguing over factual scientific laws or math equations here, so there's no reason to get butthurt when somebody makes an opposing argument about their preference in something so irrelevant to my life or well-being. I'm not an underage future communist that spends all day posting on Jow Forums and r/unixporn with my 500 package Arch Linux with a riced out i3-wm and nothing more than a web browser and music player because I don't do anything productive in my life.

Games, and everything online is botnet so saying Linux is botnet proof is all bs.

Attached: 562.png (1597x1600, 532K)

I wouldn't. Anyone trying to run Linux in a desktop/productivity context is a masochist, and my schadenfreude ist stronk.

>convince your husband to get into cuckolding
hmmm

I haven't had a single problem with Windows 7 since it came out, probably in part because I don't treat my machines like shit and make good decisions.

Is your argument that only casino games exist? 2/10

What.

With all the DLC, microtransactions and lootcrates nonsense that's rampant in the latest games, they might as well be casino games.

>Windows 7
>good decision

Attached: 1517045712796.png (300x300, 4K)

>Games
>easy to use
>customization
>piss easy to pirate
>everything just works if you aren't full blown retarded
>some software I need is only on Windows

this.

I think it's a reference to the echo-chamber of brainless parrots squarking that Jow Forums fundamentally is.

No arguments.

Why do this when you can run Linux bare metal and run whatever Windows software you need in a VM using the excellent virtualization tools on Linux, thereby getting the best of both worlds?

I hate windows but i cant go all linux because my work require windows, even these cad companies show no interests in linux.
When I retired maybe i will consider using it.

In my case, I use way more Windows software than Linux software. So what makes more sense: have a VM that I fire up every fortnight to run one or two Linux programs - or have a VM that runs 24/7, at lower performance, to run everything else? And this is before hunting drivers for my bare metal, the utterly dreadful Linux desktop experience(s), etc.

>switch to Mac
hey, is it possible to customize Mac as much as GNU/Linux?

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
Who cares? I like it, and many other operating systems with it.
>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
Why would I do that? I have nothing to gain from it.

with cookies.

Attached: cookie.jpg (450x320, 28K)

But were you reacting to what I actually posted? The reason I use windows on my laptop is better hardware support. I wanted to clarify this is the case even on thinkpads. Maybe someday there will be a product that actually functions better than windows with its preinstalled OS

Office drone stuff - MSFT all the way
Server/developer stuff - edge to Linux but depends on your needs and staff knowledge.
Home use - who fucking cares

>MS Visio (fuck draw.io btw)

Seriously why isn't there any viable FOSS alternative ? inb4 Dia, it's completely retarded when compared to Visio.

Windows 7 specifically.
1.) it just works
2.) no ads
3.) no forced updates
4.) no cortana listening into everything I say
5.) no bloat like xbox live that I cant remove without going through a hassle to do so
5.) With custom themes you can make it look as "new" as you want
6.) Pretty much every company that makes software still supports it and will continue to for a long time
7.) muh "discontinued"/"end of life" doesn't mean shit, I used XP up till 2015 and I was just fine

This. If something is working fine, leave it the fuck alone and keep right on using it. My computer is running w/ a SSD & 32GB Ram. Nothing I do now even touches 8GB ram, much less all 32GB. With the SSD it's fast as fuck, so why fuck with it? I don't play new games so while a lot of people are blowing $500 on a new card every 2 years, I'm just sitting back watching my money pile up in the bank. When I get to be in my golden years I'll be living damn good not worrying about shit.

Basically the only reason it games
>muh obscure crapware I need for my wageslave job
What are VMs? considering most enterprise software requieres a very specific environment to run correctly VMs are the only real choice anyways
>muh adobu music production
get a Mac you poor fuck

Graphical frontends are massive abstraction layers that bind together many tasks and provide many ways of accomplishing those tasks.
The unix philosophy and its associated culture are inherently incompatible with graphical frontends and thus end user software.
Excellent for programming, not so good for designing applications.

Until the Linux community admits this to themselves, people aren’t going to switch.
Ultimately they need to learn to drop the unix philosophy when making applications, or the graphical front end itself.
In my opinion either is fine, more tools should be libraries first, applications second.

i have to admit, ive never really seen this explained in a way that makes sense
i really think that some sort of frontend could wrap together everything really well, but current DEs really do feel pretty segmented

I'm not autistic enough yet

All my favourite software is on Windows and gaymes obviously.
Not office and adobe type software etc.
But, I'm after getting more storage during black Friday in november and I'll pick up a another SSD for duel boot Linux and win 10 ltsb (using 7 atm)

Most people use windows for games (home users), why gimp yourself by running intensive games in a virtual machine to further add strain on your system while you're trying to play shit at 1440p and high refresh rates? LOL

>With custom themes you can make it look as "new" as you want
Hmm what did you mean by this? The themes in personification or some dodgy skinner software that fucks up windows?

personalize*
HAHA oops

there's no dodgy skinner software involved, user. All the program is a patch to allow custom themes, and then you look for whatever theme you want on deviantart, its extremely straightforward. Here's my theme. Normally I have a lot less items on my taskbar but i've been needing to get at them more often so I have them there for convenience's sake. When I dont, it looks very nice and minimal with just the foobar icon.

Attached: theme.png (1680x1079, 2.98M)

Does it mod your file explorer or is it an icon pack or something? Check this pic out btw, might be of use to you seen as you like a vertical taskbar. If you want it to be single row.
What's the software called you use? Or the patcher...

universal-theme-patcher.en.lo4d.com/
I didn't download it from this site, since I downloaded it a while back but I did scan it for viruses and it's safe. All it does is patch three system files, themeservice.dll, themeui.dll, and uxtheme.dll. All it does is allow you to use third party themes. When you install a third party theme it doesn't change the icons, you have to do that separately but I never bothered since its too tedious a process for me to want to do and sometimes there's not the right icon for every program/file I have.

software only on windows and best/easiest on windows

Ah cool, thanks man, I've used stuff like that in the past, I'd make a restore point, it's essential while using patchers like that. Infact I've used that very one, not sure what version.
They can be a bitch if you uninstall them sometimes, but they're fun I guess.
I use clover explorer for tabbed file explorer and QTabBar for the dark backgrounds and image/video hover zoom/playback is really handy as fuck in explorer.
I probably shouldn't use both of them at the same time but everything seems to work fine, been using the combo for ages now

Btw this is win explorer with Clover doing the tabs and QTabBar doing the image hover playback and dark backgrounds.

Attached: exp.png (1360x768, 509K)

Lots of linux users don't give a damn about the unix philosophy. Even many of the most popular tools don't follow it, see git and systemd. Even ls has a fuckton of options.

The real problem is that GUIs take a fuckton of work to make. If you've written a library that does something cool it might take a week of work for you (alone) to make a well-crafted CLI wrapper for it. Whereas a worthwhile GUI might take fucking man-centuries to make it decent. Think how much work went into programs like Photoshop, Word, or VS. It's staggering.
Worse, GUI programming is soul crushing and you need designers and UX experts and managers to coordinate it all. And users are thankless and obnoxious. Nobody is gonna do that for free. In comparison a small cli tool is so easy and will even possibly be more useful for the technical people who make it.

I only use it to print since I'm having trouble with cups-pdf and don't ahve the time to fix it, also as a virtual machine with pci passthrough exclusively for playing video games.

>reasons
pro software like cubase, finale, microsoft word, premiere that i need for work all run on windows and not linux.

>how to convince
you can't really. linux users are a bunch of ideologues. the only way they'll switch is if they need a program that only runs on mac or windows. this will happen eventually when they need to do work in a professional capacity. that's what happened to everyone i know who switched

I unironically got a job

It really would be linux niggas sayin words like "thereby"

Nope I went balks deep and never going back. Most of my gaymes wirk so why use a shitty product

Don't have a drive to backup my files to so I can switch to GNU/Linux

This

software support

>reasons for using Windows
Games, Vegas 15, paint.net

Those are the only three reasons to use Windows if you're the average person. Audio production fags get an extra 1 or 2 but they prefer macO$ anyways

>What are your reasons for using Windows?
Work: Customer demands Windows applications.
Home: Games

>How would you convince a GNU/Linux user to switch?
Why would I? I prefer to work on Linux. It makes things so much easier.
