Why do all of the fa/g/s on here hate this...

Why do all of the fa/g/s on here hate this? All of the web hooks and bots that you can make on here are fun to do and have helped me develop my programming skills with captivating style. Enough people use it so that you can even make money programming scripts for people who want a higher end discord channel. I'm almost certain you have to be a friendless loser to hate something like this so much.

Oh look the hourly "why won't you fags use discord reeee" thread. Yawn.

How the hell does discord make enough to host? Cloudflare bills are probably high as hell.

Call me when it gets entirely open source so I can have even more fun programming shit on it.

Their APIs are some of the worst Ive ever had to fuss with. Just because you dont know better doesnt make them good.
Also literally spyware.

It's probably like Jow Forums and coded to only work on their specific servers/environment.

assuming you're not an actual paid shill and are genuinely curious..
Discord itself is proprietary, nonfree software that spies on its useds (not even gonna call them users). It's a massive fucking botnet and privacy risk.
Talking about all the freedom and captivating development you can do with discord doesn't mean shit when discord is inherently a tyrant. It's like bragging about how high your social credit rating is in China.

Is there really no way to use proprietary software without using firewalls to block the spyware or other shit you don't want it doing?

How are you planning send and receive data from their servers then?

idk I'm not very knowledgeable on internet protocol and how all of that works. It just seems that there should be some way of doing that if things like tor exist.

The web version is the least botnet but everything still goes through their servers and is archived.

My argument is then why does anyone here care? Most of us are guaranteed losers with nothing worth stealing so why should anyone here care if they pay for me to use their free software through our garbage data?

It's popular so of course people here will hate it. I personally have a hard time seeing what's to hate about a chat app. I might just be autistic or something.

The CIA uses it to eavesdrop on your conversations.

arguing that you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying that you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.

You could just use Discord to talk about VIDEO GAMES and when you need to talk about private stuff that you don't wan't saved on a server, use Tox.

fair enough

Kill yourself

Or I can spend my time on more interesting things because I'm over 18 and thus don't need to play or talk about videogames like a manchild :)

It scans every process running on your computer and sends that info to Discord corporation. They can do whatever they want with your private information.

:^)

Israel.

Proprietary. Gaming. Off-topic.

how is it spyware?

I just don't want it snooping through my running processes. Is that too much to ask for?

I'd assume with Discord Nitro subscriptions and selloling your data and conversations like the other "free" online services do.

Also, Israel.

Chinese government

It spies on you, self explanatory.

slack is better

It scans every process running on your PC and sends the data to Discord corporation. It is spyware.

Gonna play devil's advocate here. Since Discord tries to show what game you're playing, I can only assume they're doing a wide scan to pick up whatever game process you're playing so that it shows on your profile. Surely this could be disabled if you turned that feature off?

Next, do you remember Xfire? That was a great application that did a similar thing, all for the purpose of providing an overlay chat over any game (just like steam's chat) via a button combination. This program was widely accepted, were they fundamentally different in their invasiveness?

>The web version is the least botnet but everything still goes through their servers and is archived.
just like chan
better leave before the scary botnet gets you

It's proprietary spyware.

Even if we put aside the data collection/proprietary/suspiciously free aspects for a minute, there's something deeply wrong with Discord's community.
There is a really nasty authoritarian streak, every server, even one with just a relatively small group of friends, has to have rules.
Every server is infinitely subdivided into dozens of channels for sub-topics and if a conversation naturally flows from one topic to the next some power tripping busybody is bound to turn up and tell you to move it to the appropriate channel, killing it.
Servers are laden with bots that message you to inform you of your level, insanely complex roles systems and half a billion moderators to add extra pointless bureaucracy.
The number of moderators (plus the fact that they're usually the most active users, so often 75% of messages are sent by moderators), is a real problem because it really isn't comfortable having discussions (especially ones about anything of substance that might get heated) with somebody with significant power over you. That isn't usually how human friendships work.
There's also a weird sexual deviant streak. I'm no prude but the fact that every single server seems to have porn channels is weird, I clearly missed the memo where it was announced that sending porn to your friends had become a normal everyday activity.

discord.gg/hyNCvX5

There I just made a server and wont impose any rules or guidelines. One channel, post what you want.

+1 nitro bucks have been deposited into your still account

Discord would fucking rock if it wasn't closed-source spyware

based except for the Israel shit
leave that on Jow Forums

yep, and there's been a shitload of doxxing and leaking of private convos too

avoid discord like the plague, folks

I was playing on what the other dude said that replied to the comment I replied to.

Use the browser version then.
The only reason it does that at all is to display the games that you're playing.

This. Discord is filled with some of the worst scumbags on the internet. Furries, pedos, neo-Nazis, terrorists, etc. Most of you are secure with your data but other idiots aren't. The whole platform is a minefield of autism and cancer.

I would like for someone to find us an alternative that's an upgrade from IRC in terms of QOL and usability.

I'm ambivalent.
Steam integrated a similar ability to their client.
If I ever use machine learning to reverse engineer binary closed source programs, I'll be sure to conquer Steam and make it way cooler.

>Surely this could be disabled
It can't.

Their terms clearly state they will collect all your data and do whatever the fuck they want. It is spyware and you use it.

How do they make money when there are tons of people using it and they dont run ads or force a premium? Oh wait. They harvest all of your data. Literally all of it and sell it to the highest bidder. Monthly.

Provide proof. There are two settings to disable information collection in discord settings.

While I'm sure they harvest your data, it's possible they're making a quite substantial income on Nitro. An awful lot of people I know on Discord buy Nitro despite the fact that it offers sweet fuck all over normal Discord and providing those perks is almost free so it's all profit.

>an alternative that's an upgrade from IRC in terms of QOL and usability.
Riot.im/Matrix aims to be that, open federated protocol with multiple open source clients and E2E encryption. Unfortunately at the moment it isn't terribly popular and the only the web-based client really works.

Open source server too, just in case that implied otherwise.

Their terms clearly state they can and will collect data. It is their business model.

They provide two "settings" to turn off "usage statistics" and "personalization data". They provide no details about what this means, and their own website admits they still collect some "essential" data anyway.

Stop defending big tech corporations.

Give me some open source alternatives where I can post images bros.

mumble

you're welcome

Also to add to this, the really user hostile UI design. Messages, server members, friends, channels and even entire servers can all be deleted without a single notification being sent to anybody. Using Discord is an exercise in being gaslit continuously by a piece of software.

It's in their fucking eula, didn't you read it before using that piece of shit?

User data.

Evidence!
discordapp.com/privacy

what if I dont install it and use their browser version ?

Tencent has money to burn.

I'm getting older and it makes me sad that i can't get up to antics like spamming microsoft sam in ventrilo and teamspeak

I realised i was getting older when i didn't find the video-gamey art style funny at all

>voice chat
>spyware
>for video games

Because it's garbage. Although for me personally, it's because every cocksucker asks you to use it, even when there's no need for it.

>You could just use Discord to talk about VIDEO GAMES
We have video game boards for that.

Why do all of the fa/g/s on here hate this?
The unsourced infographics from the politically incorrect board told them to and they believe it. Of course, like many conspiracy theorists, they cannot stand up to the facts that have already been presented to debunk their paranoia.

They make money by all the Venture Capitalist funds that have been invested into them. VC's and Discord may be losing money at the moment, but they have a lot of funds to keep them running for a long time until they can capture a large enough market and create a sustainable funding model.

As for why it's closed source, well, maybe they want to protect their code, their work. Just because it's closed source doesn't mean it's malicious. I have closed source apps that are non-malicious that I've made and there are open-source apps that are malicious. They usually don't last long, but it's not a guarantee.

No, Discord isn't spyware. This is just a scare tactic to get people scared and worried and to not use the program when 100 million people have accounts and millions use Discord every day. It's a very safe program.

If you are concerned with how much info Discord has on you, then just go to your Discord settings > privacy and safety > request data and see for yourself.

>Discord confirms that it collects large amounts of sensitive user data
This data is necessary for the client to function. Voice chat, for example, requires your IP address. This isn't true just for Discord, but for most VOIP software publicly available.

>Logs of all of the other programs that are open on your computer
This is necessary in order for the "Playing" status to work, one of Discord's core features which separates it from other similar clients. This information is client-based, and isn't sent anywhere.

First and foremost, the client does NOT upload a full list of processes to the server. Period. This has never and will never happen. In order for game detection to work, Discord scans the running process list on your computer and compares it to a list of games the client knows about. It does this comparison locally on your computer, and the running process list is never sent to their servers. When it finds a matching game, IF you have the privacy option to show your current game, they send the name of the game to their gateway. File path is not sent to them. Literally the only thing they get is what you see next to "Playing ..." On the user list. Meaning if you are playing League of Legends, the only thing that is sent to Discord servers is the string "League of Legends". Nothing more, nothing less. As for the IP you are seeing the client talking to, it is one of the Discord voice servers. Game data is not sent to that server.

Discord's main source of income is not from selling collected data. That's not how VC-funded startups work. At the moment, Discord isn't concerned about finding a main source of revenue. They're funded by several investors, which wouldn't be funding Discord if it sold user data. Yes, it does share aggregate user data with partners such as Twitch, but this is for purely marketing purposes. Discord isn't Facebook.

>selling your information
Not allowed unless specifically consented to under GDPR. So I doubt they even do that. What I'm thinking is that they are operating in a loss, but try to keep the debt at a minimum with the subscriptions, and hope that there'll come investors to buy them out.

Sure thing.

Voice encryptions:
>TLS for text chat, etc
>DTLS for voice over browser
>xsalsa20 for voice over desktop app

In addition:

>This is obviously complex, but since you asked I will explain everything. I should mention that we take this seriously - and not in a lip service kinda way. We have spent a serious amount of time and energy implementing what’s considered industry best practices for a chat service. So the details: communication between our client and gateway servers is encrypted using HTTPS or WSS which uses TLS. In the browser, voice communication is powered by the WebRTC code built into Chrome and Firefox which is encrypted using DTLS. Our desktop and mobile apps use xsalsa20-poly1305 as implemented in github.com/jedisct1/libsodium. Our gateway endpoints are proxied behind CloudFlare, which provides hardware level DDOS mitigation.
>Our voice servers are not behind CloudFlare’s DDOS mitigation hardware in order to minimize latency, but due to their transient nature users can easily migrate to a new active voice server from their server’s settings if an issue arises. Voice data is not stored in any way, it is read into memory and then relayed to connected users.
>Message transmission is very similar to Telegram’s cloud chats or Slack - all data is transported to our servers and back to clients using the above mentioned industry standard security practices. Our chat messages are encrypted at rest. Our backend infrastructure is currently hosted on Google Cloud Platform. Virtual access to our servers is limited to only highly experienced server engineers on our team (currently three people). Google Cloud Platform's infrastructure has annual audits that pass the following security standards: SSAE16 / ISAE 3402 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO27018 and PCI DSS v3.1.

This. I feel like discord has killed off a bunch of smaller chans.

Christians, Buddhist, Muslims and other religions share public places for the most part.
kikes have their own schools, neighborhoods and all that. Why would we trust you? Walking around wearing obscure hats and shit.

>Kafirs and Muslims share public places for the most part
Thanks for ousting yourself as politically illiterate. You may proceed to go back to your containment board.

their """dekstop""" client is electron
that's enough for me to hate it

People on Discord are more self-centered and cancerous than Jow Forums. I don't hate it, just like I don't hate on Winblows anymore. It's just useless for me.

>keep everything open source
this also applies to servers

There's an option right in the client to request what data is collected about you. So yes there is a way to find out what that means.

Fuck off.

they have furry mods that are ready to ban you for no reason
also botnet

>javascript
into the trash it goes

ignoring all the technological flaws it has (not necessarily that it's badly coded). I hate how people use it and what it has done to a lot of communities, it enables awful behavior.

Discord is an investment, they are gonna try and compete with valve on the game distribution market soon, these past few years have just been about building a userbase.
