DOD short works okay, full DOD is good enough for most people. If you're worried about state sponsored hackers use the Gutmann method, let it run and check back in a year or two. Better yet, if you don't need the drive back, put it through a drive crusher or make some thermite.

Magnets don't work. They can cause data corruption but they will not remove all data. I have personally attempted this, I was still able to lift full images from the drive and most plain text documents could still be read. There was no way it was going to boot, but you could definitely still get data from it.
