There's not really much anyone can do about it. Anyone can make their own video sharing platform, and youtube deoesn't really go out of its way to squash competition. It doesn't have to. It's up to you as the owner of this new platform to find ways to incentivize content creators to use your services, that however, is much easier said then done and is virtually impossible if you don't have a lot of money and a good amount of support going in. What kind of content creator is gonna abandon youtube for a different service where they'll get a tiny fraction of the views and virtually no revenue? No one that's who.

There is a difference between making your own streaming platform, and making one on the scale of youtube. Anyone who has a few hard drives and good programming abilities can make a small streaming platform that would work fine for personal use or that could be used by you and a few close friends. That's only the cost of your time and a few hard drives.

Scaling that up to the level that services like youtube and twitch are on is a whole different ballgame though and you're right, that's not something a person or even a small team can do, at least not anymore. If you aren't backed by venture capital and I'll estimate enough public support to equal 1/10th of youtube's total userbase then odds are you're gonna fail.

Their web pages are generally simpler, less cluttered and yet look much better since people tend to use the internet from something as underpowered like the keitai or cybercafe that still run winxp and even if today's smartphone have much more processing power the mentality stuck.
