i've been using my E531 for years for work and it still do the job

E series is shit, however A series is literally just a T/X series with an AMD cpu

T440 removed because bad

Can I mod my T540p to take a not shit keyboard? I already modded the shit trackpad.

Keyboard light is handled by firmware

How am I supposed to build my own laptop?

What should I expect?

Mobo+processor+graphics card etc.
Get a graphics card with displayport
Get a screen with eDP (embedded displayport)
Make/find DP -> eDP cable
Find a nice laptop keyboard, make a keyboard scanner with a microcontroller -> SUB or PS/2
Find or make power converter
Make chassis
Put it together

FIN

>didn't mention battery
>smallest modern motherboard standard on the market is mini itx

Yeah no thanks user. If you have seen a non-autism version, I am extremely interested, but I haven't.

Hardware worse than in T450, I presume.

why are thinkpads so popular?

It's literally explained in the op dipshit.

yeah but like, are they really that much better than the competition?

Considering most laptops do not have easily replaceable parts, yes

I don't know what you were trying to accomplish there but alright.

My buddy has a W520 that he let me test for size and weight, and it's honestly not bad. It's about twice as big as my x220, and while it's heavier, it's not twice as heavy. My interest is piqued, but I'd rather have a T- series instead. With respect to battery life and thermals, which is better between the T420 and the T520? I figure it shouldn't be too big a difference considering they both have nvidia models, and thus should both have an appropriate double-pipe heatsink I can chuck in a non-nvidia mobo with the new CPU to help with thermals further, but I just wanted to know if there were any other gotchas. As long as I can get at least 6 hours with a 9-cell after playing with powertop and turning the brigtness down, I'll be happy.

Guys how do I convince tp gf to add me as a friend?

I read you have to be worried about locked bios on these. When you're buying from something like ebay how do you go about checking for that?
I'm pretty fresh to purchasing used tech and don't want to get ripped off.

I have to use a T440 for work. obviously everything is locked down, but are there any quality of life improvements I can make to it? the track pad is shit and they won't even give me a VGA cable without a complicated request form, much less an appropriate dock (there's one for older models on my desk at). it's frustrating using what would otherwise be a really nice laptop.

Just chiming in since I got an old T440p for work. Touchpad is shit. I guess after a long time, something inside went wrong, and the cursor occasionally goes haywire.

I wish I took a before picture of this X220, it was scratched to all fuck, bought it for £40 shipped with an i5, no RAM no HDD, had both of those lying around doing nothing anyway.
OS X Mojave will be going on it tomorrow

Attached: 20181017_204337.jpg (3378x1865, 841K)

forgot to mention, restored it using IPA and a light going over with a magic eraser.

the keyboard I had before the t440p was even shittier, I can't complain about that. I don't care about the clickpad either, although it's true is shit I rather wouuld spend my money on a quad core cpu, it still just werks I mean. Oh and a newer battery, this one is on 80% and still gives at least 6 hours with tlp enabled. that will make 7 hours and a half I guess, so I'll just get the i7 first.
Someone knows if there is a 9 cell battery I can use with the t440p? Although now that I think about it I don't think it would fit in my backpack so nvm, although I'm curious now

so basically

Other than gimmicks, is there a real difference between E485 and A485? Like keyboard quality or something?

Has anyone else had problems with the Thinkpad X250 hard freezing randomly. I run Linux exclusively, and my laptop ocasionally hard freezes, requiring reboot. It has gone over two years between freezes, but is usually on the order of months between freezes. Only twice has it happened two days in a row. It first happened about a month after I bought it. I have run the built in diagnostics, and nothing was wrong with memory.

The freezes seem random - they have happened both under load and at idle. During all the stretches without freezes, including the 2-year one, it had been carried around in my bag and whatnot without issue, and had no problems other than this.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Check your hard drive.

>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

It's fine. When I used Linux Mint, there was a health monitor of some sort, and that said it was fine.

What generation of X1 Carbon is best value right now?

i get that too, but thats cause im looking for $10-20 t61's and t43's

What distro are you running? I have been getting different performance problems on ubuntu due to iwlwifi and general intel shittiness, but since switching to KDE I've had numerous problems with the desktop session causing hard locks with or without hardware acceleration of the GPU, among issues of 100% CPU usage and screen rendering soft locks and lags.

It can be hard to reproduce these sorts of things, but maybe consider setting up some sort of log capture and performance monitoring so you can better trace the issues.

Just got a used t480s and got this message, what is this

Attached: IMG_20181017_155502_2.jpg (3331x2197, 2.28M)

It's software called "Lenovo system update", it's pretty neat actually it checks for bios and driver updates no bloat only drivers and you can pick which ones you want to install, also
>photo instead of screenshot

ah ok thanks

Ok anons, help me out, I found online a used t440s (i5 4300 U, 8Gb RAM, 256SSD) for 260€.
I wanted to wait a couple of months before actually buying a ThinkPad but it looks pretty good and i don't want to miss the opportunity. Should I contact the vendor or should i wait and buy a different one?

>E series

just bought a T420
what should i expect?

Mint originally, now Arch for almost two years. There are no performance issues whatsoever with my computer except these hard freezes, which require that I reboot the computer.

So I have an x220 and today I had to type my email on an x230.
The difference in keyboards is huge. I was considering upgrading from my x220 but now I'm thinking of just using my x220 until it dies solely for the keyboard comfort.
Anyone have justifications for lenovos new laptop keyboards? They seem so stiff and spread out, not compact and comfy like the previous keyboards.

is that your best joke

>tfw 30 euro shipping
REEEEEEEE

Don't just pick one company or market segment. Buy into it all. That way if mergers or whatever happens down the line your stock value will only go up. Think long term. Look at Tilray, shit hit 200 a share before falling. Now I ain't saying it'll all hit that point or price but it gives you an idea of the potential profits

Weren't x230 tablets always much more expensive than the regular x230 laptops? Or is this just a really great deal. But this is how much the regular x230s go for without a HDD so I'm wondering why the tablet feature isn't much more. Are the tablets decent for artwork?

Needs a new battery, hard drive, and a caddy
Has a HD+ screen
$89 buckaroos

Ive used my E450 without any issues for four years now. I use linux though, win was unbearbearable

You mean like a shithole-shithole or an American-shithole?

I have a T480s with the 1080p touchscreen. Can it be upgraded to an WQHD panel?

Great battery life, amazing keyboard, solid build quality in a small package.

I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be, check HMM to be sure.

T430s owner here. You're in for a treat.

Don't fall for the 20 series meme. It's borderline outdated at this point.

Get a T430.

since when is it a meme?

Get a DP to HDMI and plug it to a monitor.

I was gonna put Coreboot and an Ivy Bridge in there eventually desu. Best of both worlds, y'know, in theory, although nothing can be more of a pain in the ass than a **30 series.

You didn't answer my question, either.

x220?

are these really worth it? Seems really cheap for a good drawing tablet

x200
I doubt it will beat cintiqs but its pretty decent. I'm running Ubuntu with i3. Swapped out the hdd with an ssd and added more ram. No noticeable lags.

i fucked up. i just bought a T530. Now I wish I got this instead, but I didnt know it existed...

Thinking on upgrading my T410 next year since I'm going back to school.. what might be a acceptable upgrade? Might be going back into doing coding so maybe something small and for on the go? mostly going to take the current SSD out of my laptop and put it in the new one and refresh a installation of something..

wtf you faggots told me that shit is terrible as a drawing platform

Also how does it handle palm rejection?

pen input, not touch. Or do you mean the trackpad?
