You know what caused the so famous heartbleed bug in OpenSSL? a single line of code.
The attack surface is huge.

Why are you using Tails instead of building HardenedBSD from source and using jails for all your programs including kismet, jack the ripper and metasploit, on a TMPFS mounted filesystem initialized from read-only media and only allowed to communicate with the internet through a reverse proxy Squid which forces all the traffic over Tor?

To clarify , the reason you build from source is to use a custom kernel with nooptions and nodevice for everything you don't need including COMPAT_FREEBSD# and the Linuxulator, as well as all unneeded drivers.

AFAIK Tails uses vanilla Linux, which is proprietary (blobs) and therefore insecure.

How can a tool, any tool do too much? I'd rather buy a shovel that could also drive nails and screws, cut boards on half, deepfrys a turky, and measure shit, instead of buying individual tools to do each job. Everyone would buy that over a primitive caveman style shovel that only just digs holes. Just like everyone prefers systemd or svchost.exe over simple, primitive, caveman style Unix garbage.

A useful tool on occasion. I couldn't fathom using it everyday: I don't imagine many actually do.

It makes for an unusually irritating exploit target. People advocating building their own need to sit down, read the corpus of papers in the field, and have a very careful and very long think about anonymity sets first.

Qubes and Whonix are both very interesting too, but don't forget they solve a slightly different set of problems.

It's good to have seen its impact on motivating reproducible builds in Debian; and on methods for secure time syncing (way harder than it sounds). It could use even better sandboxing, and Chromium might've been a better choice for basing the Tor Browser on for a while but as the Firefox Quantum Tor Browser has come out, and as Firefox reengineers major components in Rust, it's starting to look a lot more attractive again.

It might be productive for someone to instrument it into a canary sandbox, feed it with lists of a few onion sites that you consider very likely to face state-sponsored attack - darknet markets (morally ambivalent), pedo forums (fuck right off) and terrorist forums (including the neo-nazis/white supremacists) are the three most obvious candidates - and see if any interesting 0days can be harvested from crawling them and spotting anything that tries to peek behind the curtain?

imo it's better to have many tools that do one thing and do it well rather than a messy one who do everything but in a bad way.
