I’m thinking of moving the older two monitors in the shot to a dedicated setup built around a MSX and filling their places in with later-era tubes, but unsure if the setup would lose its charm in the process.

They're what's called "nearfield monitors." You're supposed to sit close to them. They are not explicitly designed to "fill a room" per se.
