Signal

How do you contact them to arrange when to meet up?

I tried Signal recently but it requires a phone number and won't operate without Google Play. Also annoying persistent notifications and constant update requests.

Telegram

lol no

Riot.im

Tried Jitsi, but the whole finding an XMPP server and shit was confusing.

Wire is probably the best option overall with additionally lots of features.

Doesn't that use the inherently insecure SMS protocol leaking metadata everywhere?

Telegram is alright.

@anychan_tech btw

What about Wickr

wire.com/

Try Pidgin.
xmpp.org/getting-started/

I wouldn't be against hosting my own XMPP service, but what sort of VPS would I require?

>How do you contact them to arrange when to meet up?

People in the 1800s met up and had social experiences. It's not impossible, people have just become so dependent on this electronic shit to make it easier.

No idea what you'd need to run one yourself. One of my friends runs his XMPP server on his desktop.
DigitalOcean and Vultr have FreeBSD and OpenBSD options, respectively, for cloud stuff.

>privacy
As in hiding your IP or just being encrypted?

Attached: ring.png (142x65, 7K)

No, what are you talking about?

To login to Telegram, you must own a smartphone, and it must be capable of receiving SMS messages or phone calls.

some old Jow Forums meme here

Even the cheapest VPS will be able to run a small XMPP server. I recommend the Prosody daemon, since it's very easy to set up. You can get a free subdomain on afraid.org.

Shocking!! What a botnet!

Yes, but only for receiving login codes. I thought you were saying something like telegram used SMS as a base protocol for sending its own messages.

I don't own a smartphone. When my previous one broke, I never got a new phone.
I'm not him, but, surely you must realise there are metadata issues involved with SMS, even for logging in.

Don't forget to use OTR when you use IRC or XMPP.

Cyber Dust.

Self hosted matrix
Runner up: self hosted xmpp

It's vice versa though. Objectively speaking.

Which front-end for XMPP on Android, though?
Conversations?

XMPP + OMEMO in a self-run server on a fully encrypted disk with zero logs

>Conversations?
Yup. Free on f-droid.

>won't operate without Google Play
That's not true, you can download a version without GooglePlay dependence from their website. Still not much than whatsapp, at least its open source

whatsapp

Carrier pigeon

I would love an informative image explaining in detail but simply how this works. It sounds difficult.

Yeah really private when you have two (((smartphones))) recording the conversation

Use whatever and encrypt your messages with GPG. The biggest problem with privacy-focused messaging apps is getting others to use them ("come on user just get whatsapp it's what everyone else uses it's much easier than me getting an app I'll only use to contact you!") and there are new ones popping up all the time. GPG, meanwhile, just werks.

signal is the best for simple stuff, but once a groupchat gets more than a couple people it can take minutes to send messages and there are some weird bugs

riot has a horrendous interface and some glaring bugs but it is getting a good redesign in the coming weeks and bugs will be fixed soon enough with purism banking on it for their phone

tox is almost good but lack of multi-device sync makes it useless

xmpp is good but there is no great mobile client and setup could be more intuitive

everything else has privacy problems

riot is the way to go

Not really, matrix is more convenient if you use it more actively than email. I do agree that the selection of clients is better for xmpp right now though.

threema. not oss, but checks anything else:

>fully anonymous
>encrypted
>servers outside of the us/eu
>nothing is stored on this servers anyways
>whitepapered
>many on-device privacy options
>does not need google play
>availably via devs directly, you can even pay with cryptos

None of them respect your privacy.

Matrix

unironically discord

Signal works without playstore, you obviously have to download it somewhere else than from playstore/playstore version

Also i think you can use it without number through their website using email

Beznell you fucking faggot

none, make your own.
im sorry user.

shut the frick up

New link btw

404 lol

Sorry, pm me @Xorkle for new link, owner restricted group for some retarded reason

Riot.im, Wire, Briar (if you don't need calls)
Other than those, Ricochet, Crypocat and Ring

Neither of these is good for privacy

i dont even have the new link dumbass

@edintomato
Send me nudes people :D

holy shit is this the Jow Forums group where that fag phalanx used to post?

How about not broadcasting sensitive information on the internet you faggot.

>He doesn't have a dedicated cooper phone line hooked to an ancient PC
>Doesn't have said computer as a server with IRC and use it to set up IRL meetings with his friends

I don't know but join @anychan_tech so we can ban an annoying faggot in the group, just need 7 more people

openpgp +k9mail

This. I miss how prime internet was about anonymity and now it's all about "hey look at me I am an eThot"

Signal works without play services

Yeah the internet has taken a huge tumble to the depths of hell. Now it's nothing but a big huge botnet for intelligence agencies to track people and for trannies to get people fired from their jobs for misgendering them in a tweet.

Using other peoples hardware and expecting privacy is stupid.

why bother using messaging apps
just text or facebook message everyone

none of my friends do anything but imessage lmao

>he doesn't use Microsoft chat on Dialup

Cringe

>not oss, but
user, they can claim anything they want. If it's not open source, there's no way for anyone to verify if their claims are true or not.

Facebook messenger

You got it wrong with XMPP. The mobile clients are far better than the desktop ones.

Hand cypher and a trained carrier pigeon.
> no data logging
> loyal
> free

Privacy is dead.

What're the chances you both don't have your phone with you?
What're the chances nobody around you has a phone with them?

Do you have an open source phone with audited hardware running no proprietary blobs?
Do you use a proprietary (commercial) Internet connection?

>proprietary

You're laughing, but if you have someone's phone number, it's totally possible to track them down.

Audited?

>mobile
Where proprietary software rules, eh.

Silence.
It's signal without the botnet.
