Why? Was kinda curious about slackware, but was put off by the claims of ancient packages and no automated dependency management.

If you love jerking off how much of a power user you are, can’t get more power user than slackware other than LFS. Sure you don’t get automatic dependency, but you get full control over what dependencies you have and what versions they are.
