I don't know how it is over there, but her in Belgium, the big ISPs own all the markets, mobile, home and corporate. 5G is not possible competition to them, it is them.

4G has lower latency. A lot lower than 3,5G. Speed aside, I'd say it 4G is quite an improvement over 3G.

Long term, cell phones can take advantage, but short term seems like they're hitting the residential market with fixed wireless instead of paying to lay fiber directly to the house, they can just lay fiber to a neighborhood node and deliver 5G into your house at 300mbps+.

At least around here, all the towers are being fed with G-PON fiber which is 2.4gbps down and 1.2gbps up.

And my ISP(verizon) is upgrading towers to NG-PON2 which is 10gbps both ways. With the capability of being upgraded to 40gbps or even 80gbps both ways using newer tunable OLTs and ONTs.

Verizon is saying 300-500mbps is the expected speed for the customers though. Theoretically Verizon's 5G is capable of delivering up to around 1gbps, but in practice you generally wont see those speeds.

It's not about maxing out the tech. Go in a lab environment with zero outside RF interference and test out 4G radios, and sure, you'll hit some impressive results getting right up to the limit of the tech.

But that's just not going to ever happen in the real world, the real world has interference, the real world has multiple simultaneous users requesting data at the same time. For 4G LTE, seeing anything over 100Mbps in real world use is pretty damn good, seeing over 150-200mbps is basically the best you can ever expect to see in the wild, and it would likely only ever happen in a big city at night when most people aren't using the network so you're not competing for air-time or fighting against a ton of RF interference.

The same will hold true for 5G, in the lab you should have no problems hitting near gigabit speeds, but good luck seeing that in a real world deployment.
