Are PowerPC macs a viable option to escape the x86 botnet?

There are modern POWER equivalents. With PCIe, DDR4, etc.

Sure.
They have open bios, but keep in mind that they also currently have a lack of software options compared to x86

>macshit
Found your botnet.

I could by a decent used car for the price of a Talos work station.

Meh, Ten Four Fox still supports Tiger, and Leopard. All of the older version of productivity software for those platforms should still be viable imho.

they aren't exactly secure but if you hate x86 that much they are at least usable. let me tell you they are slow as fuck though and they run incredibly hot. my 2004 1 ghz emac puts out way more heat and is generally slower than a p4 from 2004. it can't play back 720x480 h264 without dropping frames, which the pentium can. also you have to get one of the tower macs for any hope of remotely decent graphics.

Sounds like Macs = scam, huhuhuhuhuh

Hhhhhhhhhhh

>if you spell macs backwards, it reads scam

We're talking about using computers from over a decade ago

>14 year old computer runs like shit
>scam
Incredible detective work!

Security thru obscurity.

I have a few PowerBooks laying around that I can use. I’d much rather use an ancient, slow cpu, than one with a fucking NSA backdoor.

Who the fucking is going to waste their time targeting PPC?

There are several modern operating systems that support PowerPC Macs. Also, not specifically targeting a platform doesn't mean your software won't run on the platform. Most shit I couldn't find as a binary could be obtained by compiling it with no patches

You guys are paranoid that the NSA is watching you through the "x86 botnet", so you proceed to use a computer running an operating system that was unsupported 8 years ago.
The NSA probably can exploit that machine via automated means, and now you also get to deal with the fact that your system could be exploited by any skid if they notice it.

He's apparently working on a cheaper one. If the whole system can come under ~1,500USD, I'd strongly consider buying one and using it as a Linux/BSD development station for various pet projects. Much comfier than an x86 shitbook.

>Mac OS X is the only operating system

If you can live with the lack of software then more power to you.
I'd personally be curious to try MorphOS, or whatever else that still supports PPC.

>macs backwards = scam
Woah was it coincidence, or foreshadowing?

They'd be known as McIntoshes if it wasn't for the audio equipment company.

>Mcintoshes
>she's into mc
Woah bro.

Every time I remember they were supposed to be McIntoshes I think "I'm a Mick" "And I'm a PC"

What operatin systems and software can I even run on PPC?

Coud I even install Ubuntu with Krita and Blender and tablet drivers on it?
Could I play anything?

The old commercials?

>Who the fucking is going to waste their time targeting PPC?
Geniuses who realized just who in the world still, and has for decades used PPC.

Yeah

>Ubuntu
I know official support is dropped but one of the "distros" that's just Ubuntu with a different DE still supports it last I checked
>other operating systems
OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, MorphOS, various Linux distros
>software
You should be able to run Krita and Blender, the drivers are a maybe.
>could I play anything
PowerPC OS X's your best bet for commercial games. Doom 3, Sims 2, Pro Skater series, Diablo 3, etc. For bigger games through ~2006 there's a chance there's a port. On other operating systems you can use emulators and open source games. There are open source engines for commercial games like Morrowind and Doom 3 but you generally need x86 for those.

Oh you're clever poking fun at dykes and faggits like that. It makes me wish I was back in 7th grade too.

>have a tab stack for each board I browse
>put the /fa/ watch thread tab in the Jow Forums stack where it belongs
fuck you

>implying making fun of queers is a grade school activity and not something for grown adults
You are such a massive fag.

>vulnerability to a hardware flaw
>botnet
This meme needs to die

>proprietary nsaOS
>not botnet
mactoddlers need to die

It really depends on what you do and how you do it. A good G5 has more than enough horsepower to solve more than enough everyday problems, plenty of software and modern enough architecture. If you stick with OS X on such a system you should still be able to work with pretty much any common file format, program in most common or otherwise established languages and access most online content in some form. There are still plenty of hobbyists using PPC systems for some or all of their daily workloads.
If your computer usage is mostly media-centric or relies on heavy web content in some other way you probably wouldn't enjoy it very much or would find yourself using your phone for a lot of things. If you more prefer to use your computer as a computer, you might find an easier time of it.

>Are PowerPC macs a viable option to escape the x86 botnet?

PowerPC 7450

Often known as the G4e (for enhanced) or G4+, the PPC 7450 was a major redesign of the G4 architecture. With 33 million transistors, it had over 3x as many as the 7400, and AltiVec performance was also improved. The new CPU was first used on the 733 MHz Digital Audio Power Mac G4 when it was released in January 2001 – the same time as the PowerBook G4.

I have a dual G4 1.25Ghz.

Still doesn't mean anyone gives a shit about them.
>you also get to deal with the fact that your system could be exploited by any skid if they notice it.
If you've got skids actually consciously going after you then security patches aren't going to mean shit and you're probably just going to get socially engineered or tricked into installing some garbage anyway. Most of those types are morons that target the least common denominator with the most potential payout, they're not sifting through the ether looking for the 0.001% of most likely money-strapped users running on some specific 15 year old PowerPC platform running in the right conditions to be vulnerable to some esoteric long-patched exploit when they can just phish your grandparents or convince your dad to install some malware with a fake download button on a porn site.

All this is provided they can even find you, unless you're a retard straight up connecting your computer to the internet no amount of automated scanning bots are going to penetrate a firewall to glean that kind of detail, let alone exploit vulnerable services behind it.

>Still doesn't mean anyone gives a shit about them.
I never said it did. For the record though up until a year or two ago VLC still officially released PowerPC OS X binaries, and I doubt they're the only project to have done so

Sorry, I think I misinterpreted your post.
