See above. You have a choice of mitigating virtually all of it on Android, but not iOS. The device is usable with it, but I doubt you'll argue against Apple and their so called "security measures" - which are glorified exploits through which Apple datamines everything they can. Custom ROMs also allows prolonged software updates, far more than any OEM ever intended to update.

The green and tan parts could be as wide as you need them to be really (there may be some other modifications necessary depending on how wide you make it). The parts that make that mechanism function are the groove, bar, and spring. You could stretch the green and tan parts into a long pill shape (instead of the circular profile they have now) and it should work the same

Well, a mechanism like that would be expensive. The current one (half/half) is just a body, and an adjustable screen.

in the beginning it was about getting consumers to purchase the devices, so they offered features such as removable batteries and (some) offered long term software support or one or the other
as time went on, they switched their model to one of planned obsolescence because it's more profitable for them to design devices that are harder to fix so you will just purchase a new device
this is why they'd rather design a device with features that will eventually break rather than with features that will last
