We need a third competitor that makes fewer but faster cores

Single-core CPU with 4X the IPC of Coffee Lake. Literally better than quad core.

The only reason NVIDIA, AMD and Intel are allowed to exist in their two duopolies, starving the PC market from innovation is that they are all American. If they were all Asian Trump would be all over their ass.
We pay Americans' nationalism and protectionism with shitty products and non-existent competition with bad pricing.

wtf I am a communist now

very nice

Yeah dude, we need an absolute madman super genius with tens of billions of dollars to literally throw away to develop an X86 core, without violating any AMD/intel IP, that has a front end capable of funneling more instructions to the execution units faster than anything ever designed, without being clock limited, so they can make a single core chip that has absolutely no utility whatsoever outside of playing your poorly threaded video games.
We need that.

The only thing x86_64 requires and it's still patented is probably SSE2 which expires next year IIRC. They still protect some other patents though so not sure.

>hurrr theres totally a conspiracy to hold back tech and its muh nationalism
This is such a low IQ take.
POWER exists. MIPS exists. SPARC64 exists. ARM exists. RISC-V exists.
X86 doesn't hold some magic and untouchable performance crown, anyone could reach parity and surpass it if they spent the money and man hours on it. POWER9 can take some shots at intel's best, but only in some metrics, its not a universal competitor. No one is doing that because there is no demand for it. People don't want to up and abandon their software, move to another platform, potentially have to hire/fire IT to deal with that new platform. Products have their niches, and those niches are part of a feedback loop that the consumers themselves create.
Stay on /leftypol/ with your Commie trash, you HRT sucking weirdo.

It's not a conspiracy you dingus. It's automatic.
The US government openly won't fight them.

you are stupid. x86_64 is filled with patent trolling. For example it requires SSE2 and it expires next year.

There is nothing to be fought, retard.
There are any number of other core architectures, from small many core designs, to large massively threaded cores. AMD and Intel do not own a monopoly on computing, they merely control the X86 space because they developed all of it and/or hold all relevant IP. They have nothing to do with the development or market share of any other ISA.

America isn't propping them up. Nor would America do a single thing about it if in an alternate reality X86 IP was created by an Asian firm instead.

You have no idea what you're even talking about. AMD64 is nothing but a patched on extension to X86, it isn't relevant or requisite to any other ISA.

The only reason we have multiple core CPUs in the consumer market is because it became nearly impossible to improve IPC and clock speed at the same rate demand increased.

Just port all of your software to POWER9 :^)

>implying it isn't because software constantly deadlocked single core systems
The single GREATEST improvement of the 2000's was the introduction of the dual core processor.

it is called the second hand market.

VIA also still makes x86_64 CPUs, they just keep to the Chinese market. Big enough slice of the pie.

None of that shit works on a half functioning os except for arm and arm on the desktop is a big meme

>arm on the desktop is a big meme
People tend to forget, that ARM started as a desktop processor

user:
>barely supported platforms suck
>so I will refuse to use them, grow the userbase, and help improve support
Also user:
>WTF why are there no good alternatives to X86 in the desktop!?

You are your own problem, pal.

we cant make fasther processors caus weve already reached their thermal limits

And that it failed like every other meme RISC 90's cpu, literally the only borderline successful RISC desktop cpu was the K6

Oh yes some aspie from Jow Forums is going to get microshit to support power in cuckblows 10 botnet edition
nice hopeful thinking

>the only OS I want to use is Windows!!!!

Why are you even here?

>Wanting to use broken shit that will never work
regardless of the fact that x86 is still faster and more supported in linux as well

i agree with your sentiment and people usually don't put their money where their mouth is when it comes to using under represented platforms. truth be told, these platforms are usually designed and developed for a specific purpose, or specific market and attempting to use those platforms for anything other than those specified purposes leads the platform to running like rubbish.

So why haven't the Asian countries come up with alternatives?

All they do is copy the inventions of the West. They never create anything original. But what else would you expect from a colony of ants.

The Commie can't answer because he knows nothing about tech. Hes a fucking tranny that sits in the /leftypol/ discord and shits up blue boards with propaganda and gets his little faggot crew to mass report posts they don't like.

Asian countries have made their own architectures for the HPC market. For a brief period China actually had the Top500 super computer record for peak compute power with their own genuinely unique Sunway core.
Japan's Fujitsu was behind development of SPARC and SPARC64. The Fujitsu K super computer for quite a while had unmatched performance on memory operations.

There isn't any lack of talent to go around, nor money. There just isn't any demand for something else in the desktop ecosystem.

>You have no idea what you're even talking about. AMD64 is nothing but a patched on extension to X86, it isn't relevant or requisite to any other ISA.
well without it you won't have any modern intel processors worth a shit

Intel the RAM maker demolished the titan known as IBM. IBM once produced microprocessors that went inside their proprietary PCs.

Also shat on Cyrix and sued AMD for selling Chink knockoffs of Pentium 1 and 2s. AMD won the lawsuit and they became Intel's main competitor that is allowed to lose but not allowed to go under because they are a duopoly.

Nvidia didn't even show up until the late 90s/early 00s, ATI and a bunch of smaller companies had a monopoly of the AGP card space. Nvidia only started eating market share when they released their old 5000 series and took off when they released the 8800 that was rebadged for at least two generations (9700 and 260).

the only reason for the rise of nvidya was vidya games

ATI was perfectly fine for anything except games

Then nvidia showed their Riva TNT card which blew away competition

Shortly after there was Geforce which blew away competition again

At some point ATI shifted away from business graphics and started to compete in gaming cards

IBM contracted intel to supply CPUs for them, part of the contract required a second supply source so they'd never be totally cut off if something happened to a foundry. AMD was the company contracted to be the second supply source.
They weren't "Chink knockoffs." AMD won that legal battle because intel's claims were completely baseless. AMD ended up becoming intel's main competitor because they hired the right talent and focused on increasing instructions per clock with a moderate pipeline instead of relying on their foundry to try and push clocks as high as possible with a long pipeline.
No one wants your revisionist history.

we need convenient and affordable liquid nitrogen overclocking kits so our current CPUs can run at 8GHz instead of 4GHz.

>No one wants your revisionist history.
>They weren't "Chink knockoffs"
>just the AMD™ approved version
Nice try AMD shill

>it's a '/v/tard doesn't understand how [technology] works' thread
My favourite.

Yes it's trumps fault. Intel and amd both began in 2016

>Single-core CPU with 4X the IPC of Coffee Lake.
And I want a million dollars.

We could make faster operating systems, though, better drivers, etc.

But M$ are faggots and *nix spends too much time on cli

...

Apple A12 already has almost 2X the IPC of Skylake

Power9 largely surpasses x86, it just needs more optimised software written for it. The benchmarks only test using x86 software which is poorly patched to run on Power9 processors.

This is probably the most retarded thing I've read this week.

Okay, /v/. Just go back to your video games, this discussion is a little bit out of your depths. That okay, kiddo?

>projecting
You said, I quote "The benchmarks only test using x86 software which is poorly patched to run on Power9 processors"
You are, in fact - retarded.

Yep, ok /v/. I think you're a little confused. Maybe go play a game to take your mind off it?

you cant make anything as a single core and expect to beat anything..
unless the logic is made by diamond transistors
and the entire cpu is based on some kind of crystal which will give infinite possibilities

aka it wont happen
what they are doing now to moving towards quantum computing

Going wider requires exponentially more complexity and thus power and heat. That complexity also makes higher clocks higher to achieve. You get more out of more smaller cores. If it was at all practical to make giant monolithic cores someone would still be doing it.

Cringe

fuck off /v/tard

>Implying duopolies don't experience competition and innovation

You're a fucking retard if you think duopolies don't have innovation. Monopolies and duopolies are two different things

VIA makes x86 chips but they are lacking in CPU designers.
Hygon literally makes cloned AMD Epyc CPUs named the Dhyana.

Then there are all the other non x86 cpus on the market.

Bad goy

>VIA
Fuck them, their chipsets give me PTSD from the Pentium 4 era .
