It's a deb package, you retard. Double click on it and it'll install normally. It's basically just like an exe file. Dragging it into the terminal is useful because it tells you if there were any issues which is why everyone recommends it.

pretty much all the open source software I use is from the dev site. for things that aren't I run them in a virtual machine and check them out first. applications should be sandboxed instead if possible though
