Chad mods don't have to deal with threads like that. That's what jannies are for. They even - you're not gonna believe this - they even do it FOR FREE.

Options > Navigation > Always use infinite scroll, you might need to wait for something unfiltered to be on page 1 so you can open it and scroll the rest. Open threads you like in their own tab.

You can remove Text from Catalog images and right click on them to to hide them.

You call also select "Hide thumbnails" from Option > Images & Media to hide image shit posting. If I go to the catalog and it half Wojacks and Pepe I just don't read the post. It has to be a good image and entertaining text for me to read it.

The pragmatic way I've personally treated g is to cut losses on these threads and gatekeep on unfiltered. Your way would work, but I think you and I both know this site is seeing its last few days as anything resembling what it was pre2014.
