I got my friends to use it. I dragged several out of Skype. I met little to no resistance because what fucking leg would that resistance have to stand on?
Discord's featureful as fuck, despite botnet Electron. (But Electron also means it can easily be a Snap/Flatpak!

What the fuck else is there? The only shit my friends are willing to use is Discord or Steam chat. I remember years and years ago when I actually got a few of my friends to use WASTE with me, that lasted a whole week before they thought it was too much trouble and never logged in again. Discord has also taken over voice chat; I remember trying my hardest to force my friends not to use Teamspeak, introducing them to Mumble, explaining why it's better, etc. NOBODY CARED. Now everybody just uses Discord anyway.

A lot of stuff related to the games I play happens on discord, homebrew devs put all their shit on discord, etc. My hands are tied, there is no choice BUT to use it.

What we really need is a new-age IRC protocol. Something that keeps all the good points of IRC, but has all the modern conveniences we come to expect of a chat application. IRC gets the job done if all you need to do is chat. But we don't just chat anymore. In Discord, you can directly post images and files into the chat, you can embed video links, you can voice chat, etc. If IRC had these features and paired it all with secure encryption, who the fuck would use Discord? Basically we need a free software solution that brings the best of both worlds if you want anyone to actually use it.

For example the feature you said about being able to just paste the image onto the chat box is already implemented on the Polari IRC client. What it does is upload automagically the image to a website and paste the link into chat.
