Just left a company where new CEO is busy firing his staff to cover his ineptitude; eventually he’ll be surrounded by his own hires with no one left to blame. Meanwhile rank and file engineering staff is leaving bc no direction.

That's just plain wrong. You ignore the multitudes of times these carefully researched marketed approaches work financially. Even at times if it garners some bad PR. Blizzards successes like overwatch or how they continue to market watered down expansions to wow with financial success are easy to ignore to fit your narrative.

The fact is these companies are not braindead, especially at the size of one like blizzard. Everyone is capable of making mistakes along the way and even falling but to act like this is some kind of systematic issue is pretty silly. Considering those marketing and sales people that get all of this bad rep had a large part in making the company the size it is and the financial success it is.

You always have to balance the two, and to imply that one should listen solely to product development "dream big" types is naive and stupid, there are just as many cases, perhaps more, of people of that type failing companies as more business focused individuals.

This is an exercise in pseudo intellectualism that is seen the internet over and it really shows a fundamental lack of understanding at the size of these companies, the kinds of products they make, their financial situation and much more.

It was bound to happen at some point and it happens that gaming market is in a strange form as mobile industry makes billions yet everyone seems to hate it.

Big companies have to please both from an economical pov.
Blizzard chose to make diablo family-friendly to appeal to this new market that is non-gamer-yet-plays-games.
