Some dumbphones back in the day didn't have a front-facing camera, so they just put a small mirror next to the back one so people could see themselves when taking a selfie.
Would this be a better solution to notches?
People who take a lot of selfies probably won't buy it, but for most of those who only take them once in a while I think the mirror would be an acceptable compromise.
