Admittedly its not that bad, but you will not want to pay that much for it. I got an x230 for around $100 with same ram and even an 830 pro SSD. Last year it was $120 for me, and likely less for a lot of other people. The 1 ram slot and slower CPU is another reason its not worth it.

it has battery bridge system so just slap more batteries if the battery life is not adequate for your use, fan noise is probably annoying at some crazy unrealistic torture test, in real world usage it should be mostly fanless or whisper quiet at lowest fan speed, there's tpfancontrol anyway to fine tune fan speed if it really annoys you

I've had my X220 for a few years now and it's done good, but the CPU tends to bottleneck me and, worse than that, it gets pretty damn hot under stress.
Is it reasonable to upgrade the CPU in this thing, or am I better off just applying some thermal paste and calling it a day? All I've done is upgrade from HDD to SSD and 4gb RAM to 8gb, but that's literally baby mode with this laptop.

Your only real option is to swap the motherboard from an X230 one unless you're a soddering god. If your temps are bad, get some good thermal paste and reapply it.
