Why are graphing calculators still so expensive? You can literally get a smartphone for less than a T-84.

Texas Instruments has a monopoly
Price fixing between manufacturers
Isn't there a FOSS equivalent software that runs on anything? It's 2018, who the fuck pays for a calculator.
HP Prime G2 is the best calculator out there as far as I can tell. Objectively its hardware is the fastest available, and it's allowed on the SAT.
The TI-83 is still a phenomenal piece of hardware that most students are too ignorant to appreciate.
Numworks is colour, has a completely OSS firmware and goes for about $100
This
No they don't. At least Casio is in the game too. Don't know of any others though
you can use a calculator in exams, while smartphones are not allowed. this creates demand for those calculators.
They are so durable. I use my mom's ti-85 from college, and I feel like my grandkids will be able to as well.
Also I learned to program on it, so it's max comfy.
Even my modern ti-84 is incredibly sturdy, however I am worried the rechargeable battery will go out one day ten years from now.
Because anyone stupid enough to buy one in 2018 is stupid enough to pay out the nose for it. Also TI sucks:
youtube.com
Because it just werks even 20 years later.
Try that with your smartphone
Yah. Buying a new TI is stupid but let's get a bloated and expensive Matlab package instead. Fucking retard
>bloated
That's a good thing nigger.
>expensive
Torrents
My graphing calculator died after 15 years (memory chips went bad)
You can emulate any edition of texas instruments calculator on your PC or phone. You can't use that for an exam though for obvious reasons, so yeah, TI has the market cornered. Like most expenses at a University you either buy them or risk failing. For work use though an emulator works fine.
>You can literally get a smartphone for less than a T-84.
yeah a POS one
price fixing and deals with education facilities.
same reason why college books are so fucking expensive
Pic related is me running a TI-84 on my LG G6. Kind of sucks not having tactile buttons but the vibrating feedback does alright. Saved me about a hundred dollars back in high school where it was required for class but not for exams.
the fuck is the point of these calcs anyway, who actually uses all the fuctions in daily life?
literally more functions than a fancy Fluke volt meter or an osmelloscope.
I dislike ave haha take that
>price fixing
Casio calculators are half the price and have more features.
TI does have a monopoly on "calculators allowed for exams" because of all their contracts with the states
I took apart a scientific calculator and stuffed a old android phone into it. None of the test proctors caught on. They're more busy looking for irregular behavior like looking around the room than checking calculator functionality.
on the ti-84 plus the batteries are connected to the motherboard in a way that literally pokes a hole through the pads overtime breaking the calculator.... I opened my broken one up and sure enough, the pads had been worn through by a literal needle that just rested on it.
FUCKING I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS SHIT
Mine still werks after 20 years
gayyyyyyy
t. nigger who doesn't know anything about TI
You can preform all of the essential functions (and more) using GNU/R
use octave
>being unoriginal
how embarrassing
Poorfag retard
because texas instruments is in bed with the colleges and high schools and textbook companies and they can sell it for whatever they want because teachers, professors, and ACT/SAT rules make it more difficult to use any other calculator because they either prohibit them or refuse to help students with them
most professors will not allow you to use any calculator with a port due to all of the pajeets in the class who will try to cheat with the help of other equally dimwitted rajeshs
>not just using an old PDA with a CAS or proper programming language interpreter/compiler
Mine never gave a shit as long as it didn't connect to the internet. I used a fully PC-compatible HP 95LX through most of my calculus courses.
Go to damn pawnshop and buy it cheaper. Quit being a nigger.
>working on a tablet
Fuck no.
Real buttons are a godsend though.
What?
haha
Why the fuck would you want to work on something so tiny when you can have a full sized laptop? If it's something simple and quick, a scientific calculator is the best. If it's something involved and tedious, using a full sized keyboard and monitor(s) makes your life easier.
Why waste space with a limp bulk-ass laptop when you can solve the same problems with something that fits in your pocket? Why do the same with a piece of shit cheap calculator when you can spend the same money and volume on something that can actually do more than simple arithmetic and some pre-defined functions?
ITODDLERS BTFO
Graphics
If you've got a graph/visualization that can't be adequately rendered on a handheld then why the fuck would you limp out on a shitty overheating laptop rather than a proper workstation or server that you can easily connect to remotely and have the best of all worlds?
This.
imagine actually paying for math software in 2018, or any college education tier software for that matter
Fucking kek. My uni is still using AspenONE 8 because they're too fucking retarded to torrent v9 which is on fucking piratebay
>limp bulk-ass
lol, which is it?
>Why do the same with a piece of shit cheap calculator when you can spend the same money and volume on something that can actually do more than simple arithmetic and some pre-defined functions?
lol again, which is it? Get a proper full-featured thing (a computer) or some shitty calculator?
>calculators are “shitty”
This child doesn’t even RPN, long before 32 bit computers were common you could buy a 128 bit pocket calculator.
Please, I know about that. But guess what? You can get a nice laptop for pretty cheap nowadays, and it'll beat the shit out of your calculators. Any other retarded arguments? Horses are better than cars because the first car prototype was garbage?
>laptop battery lasts mere hours instead of months or years
>laptop doesn’t fit in pocket
>programming much more tedious than RPN
>CIA niggers can access your data and algorithms making connected devices unsuitable for secure work
You’re a fucking retarded child if you think a laptop or smartphone can replace a good pocket calculator.
>>laptop battery lasts mere hours instead of months or years
Nonissue. Plug it into the mains lol.
>>laptop doesn’t fit in pocket
So?
>>programming much more tedious than RPN
user's theorem: you can't have RPN on a laptop. Proof left as an exercise to the reader.
>>CIA niggers can access your data and algorithms making connected devices unsuitable for secure work
Ok, you're a retard lmao. Goodbye.
>not wanting the cia to steal your inventions and interfere with your calculations makes you a retard
Tell that to the Iranians.
Everyone I know has a Casio, I'm the only TI fag in my group. And Casios are way more expensive
Wait what? Canadian here, never heard of this
got mine stolen in high school, RIP
do you have pictures?
>And Casios are way more expensive
Literally 60% the price.

python (scipy), octave and R
lots of choices.
bought one of those ti 84 that's like 1/3 the size 1/3 the weight with a backlit screen and rechargable lithium battery after old silver edition died. its pretty good but other than making simple plug chug programs I don't think im using the full potential
Shits all painful to use. An HP 50g is much better.
I like programming my ti but the thing is clearly made for students.
What currently produced calcs should I look at for general purpose programming?
how many tests really required a calculator? you solve shit symbolically and maybe throw in and simplify some constants at the end.
WP-34s or DM-42 or DM-15 for numerics. The HP 50g was recently discontinued but it is great, and has a full CAS like Mathematica or Maple.
These days I mostly use the DM-42.
When I took calc they allowed 4 function only during tests. Though I did use a TI-89 when studying to help me verify problems and such.
how so? Full qwerty input seems obviously superior.
You can get latex rendering of output on gui interfaces or decent pretty print on console.
I used to work in chemical testing and we had these. We'd use about half the functions every day.
>on computer have to type in sin and parenthesis and use caps and commas and shit so your environment knows what you mean
>on RPN / RPL calc you type in your numbers, hit enter, and then hit the key or soft key associated with your desired function
50g has a superior equation writer, easy programming in RPL, and will format your equations all pretty like. Plus you have a properly designed programming language instead of Python. It’s like the difference between a modern digital camera where you have to poke at menus and shit to change any basic setting vs. a film camera where you just twist the knob or dial.
believe it. In many (most) high schools and universities they only allow a couple calculator models to be used for exams. At the beginning of the semester the teacher will tell you exactly what kind of calc u need to buy.
You don’t know shit you dumb cunt. Who pays you to shit up the board anyway, Google? I hope you get AIDS.
P.S. I can tell you’re a woman and not a very tech literate one at that.
it's a meme for that special kind of retard that unironically uses gentoo. anyone with a half of brain would buy an android phone or a laptop instead. only boomers who are not tech savvy are justified in using it.
>a phone with a battery life measured in mere hours and a laptop with even fewer hours of life replace a device which can run for months or years and is ready to go at all times
I bet you’re an unironically transfag.
why cant no business make graphical calculators that are cheaper and just werk and flood the market
does my tiny zoomer brain not get something
Can confirm this monopoly for Switzerland throughout high school and university, too.
The Chinese already did this. The issue is that TI colludes with the textbook companies and teachers only learn TI, at least in the USA.
The chinks fucked up by not cloning the TI OS 100%, thus making it incompatible with the step by step instructions in the textbooks.
>b-but that is expected behavior goy
this is the only response in the thread that is on track. how is Jow Forums so rarted?
teachers are monitoring for cheating and its much more difficult, if not impossible to do that for every student in the room if they are using their phone. so they make everyone use old calculators. yeah you can rice your calculator but the barrier to entry on that is much more niche and difficult than downloading an app. the steady population of students guarantees a steady market of demand for the product.
>you are now a woman or a tranny if you prefer a more powerful, more general purpose computing device
wew lad
Are there any current options that are more common/widely available?
Why is swissmicro not more common? Lack of market?
No you’ve intentionally misunderstood, another female trait designed to protect your egos. I can tell you’re a woman by the psychological tack you take. It has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with how you deal with a conversation.
I’m undoubtedly a lot smarter than you so don’t feel bad, toots.
They are high end calculators for people who know what they want. There is nothing out there other than Swissmicros now that HP left the RPN market.
Any good android app to make graphs? The pixels of my TI 83 are beggning to die.
Nope. Sorry. Learn to use a pen and paper.
R is a mess. The best that can be said about it is that it’s the right price for what you get.
>Imagen paying for software
I cant
...neither? Are you even literate?
Both the calculator and the laptop are pretty fucking dumb when you can have a general-purpose pocket computer instead that combines the advantages of both.
Can confirm for germany. TI has an office in the same city a ministry for education resides. Coincidence? I think not.
This, it works, but it's the scientists PHP.
Europoor here. Went trough high school on a Casio fx-82 (old model with the sliding hard case, the new model with shitty flip case was breaking in everyone else's bags). Nobody has graphic calculators and never ever saw anybody using TI.
For the Maths exam for uni entrance, they required us to carry a graphic calculator. The high school lended each one of us a Casio. Worked flawlessly and I carried it into the physics exam two hours later, where I made good use of it's memory...
>who the fuck pays for a calculator.
people who go to universities and do exams
Give it back Jamal.
Not that I could have done otherwise. They took our names and IDs and noted them so that they could ask for the calculator when we came to pick the exam's result certification (also delivered at the high school).
Brasil here, I'd to do most of my uni exans with paper and pencil. I don't know why you should let a machine do the test for you.
Because if you've gotten to uni(shit, high school, even), calculating 23*8247 isn't "test", it's busywork.
sorry user I'm going to have to agree. theres levels of personal offence and ego load balancing only women can achieve and you are definitely of the variety.
