See how PostgreSQL, Blender, QGIS, SQLite etc. don't have mascots? It's more like good FOSS software that potential contributors like are the key to mascots.
Most people will think free as in free beer when you say free software. FOSS is superior until you come up with a better word that isn't some spanish shit no one knows how to pronounce.
free software means i don't have to pay for it. FOSS is a better term to describe software that is free to be modified and distributed.
