Yes I remember a story like this. It's weird because they're supposed to be encrypted yet they could tell what information was being sent from a user account? I remember reading some explanation they gave about this and it sounded convincing at the time but can't be arsed to look for it.

They couldn't see the contents of the inbox. They just deleted it. Which makes it even worse.

No, you have to use their client. I'd prefer something that allows me to use mu4e or mutt.
