X-ray machines function by catching radiation on the other side of the medium and form a picture based on which parts absorb or reflect the radiation that comes from the source on the other side. It might not break physics if you had a source under the table, but even then theres no way a tiny layer of paint on a playing card would affect x-rays. X-rays are also a health risk if you are exposed to them for long periods of time, which is why the nurse always leaves the room or moves behind a protective screen when they do scans in a hospital.
