I don't get your stupid zoomer memes.
At least fucking explain it.

Try reading the graph instead of being an absolute retard. Fucking boomer

its quite obvious if you just pay a bit more attention
av1 must be an encoder or something

>in the year "coming soon" a 4gb data plan will inexplicably allow you to watch more videos than now

AV1 is a next-gen video codec, which compresses better than h265 and is uncucked by royalties.
Basically every major media company who isn't in bed with MPEG is pushing for it.

Neck yourself you fucking retard. You're part of the reason why Jow Forums is filled with /v/edditors

wew somebody is a well balanced adult

Says the guy that's too retarded to get basic info from a graph. All your life points went into the "be a retard" skill tree

They conveniently don't show the battery life decrease for the device watching these videos

see
again

if you keep insulting random people like that you'll end up without friends

You want me to flex those brain cells and conclude that that's already the case, or nah?

>data plan
Living in third world country sucks

>/b/ tier anger with an angsty twist about projected wasted years on /v/
>You're why Jow Forums is bad
Uh-huh

>if you keep insulting random people like that you'll end up without friends
While this is certainly not wrong, do you realise where you are? This is the place for hyper-argumentative autists to congregate.

t. lived in New Morocco aka Western Europe. Enjoy footing the bill for Muhammad while he rapes your sister

Low IQ retard that couldn't see the fuck huge AV1 symbol. I guess your tiny brain couldn't make the connection. Must be all those years spamming in twitch chats and playing video games

let me guess: watching a video in 720p30fps will start cooking my old laptop because of ridicolous CPU/GPU power required to decompress.

is that what's gonna happen, right?

Tell your wife's bull how you don't like brown people. Kek

This is a technology board, take your cuck fantasies somewhere else.

I live in the Philippines and this shit is the bane of my existence. Using some hax I can get about 3gb per day cheap instead of the normal $1 per gb. It's better than being legit but I'm still suffering, I sync videos from my vps to google drive so it transcodes them to 360p and I can watch them without getting my sim card blocked. If I go over the 3gb it's another $1 for the sim card and $1 for another 10 days of data. Next gen video codecs can't mature fast enough. I'll probably be back home in the US by the time any of this shit is worthwhile though.

I think it will have a bigger impact on people streaming from home though. You know, people watching on game consoles, roku type devices, smart TVs, etc... Once that hurdle could be overcome it could increase the quality of mobile video. Usually cell providers in the US that allow unlimited streaming cap it at 480p. Widespread adoption of better codecs and quality hardware accelerated decoding could bump that up.

Is the amount of people who watch netflix on battery powered devices significant? Everyone has a shitty smart tv with Netflix now

>watching (((netflax)))

Looks like I hit a sore spot Hans. Just hope that Hitler 2.0 will be born to save your cucked nation.

Shilling for another codec to create fake interest in a theoretical UP TO 20% reduction in file size at the cost of increased processing power when decoding (aka more energy usage further killing the planet) and encoding taking enormously longer. OP is a google/other-botnets project shill and peice of garbage basically.

Wasn't me, but I guess that you couldn't comprehend that either, due to your further projection of calling other retards.
Just calm down smoothbrain, the world isn't against you even if it seems too difficult for you.

Learn to read graphs before calling others smooth brains

I wasn't the graph guy or the guy who originally called you out. Stop proving yourself as a smoothbrain.

>streaming subscriptions

Whatever you say kid.

Eh, last time i checked software decoding of av1 should be about 2 times more CPU intensive than VP9 at the same bitrate. It's not the end of the world.

>use Plex
>download movie/show once
>never waste data on it again for local watching

Can it compress porn?

But AV1 if FOSS, isn't this is what Jow Forums jerks to so furiously?

Are there really that many people who don't have unlimited data on their home connection? I would kill myself

royalties? the fuck

AV1 gives BETTER IMAGE QUALITY at LOWER BITRATES & ROYALTY FREE

It's a WIN WIN codec and everyone is embracing it because they're fed up about the licensing issues of HEVC

H.265.

Needs hardware acceleration before it's really going to get anywhere though.

What are you watching Netflix away from home?

no, it will detected it and call the FBI

100gb plan here, closest i came to fillin git was 82.2 gb when my fibre was down for maintenance for 4 days. Usually I only use around 40gb per month but its nice to know im never in an danger of running out. Contract is £30 a month and came with a Razer phone (the first one)

what codecs is this comparing

>no you
Nice argument moron. Also I'm not German.
>Looks like I hit a sore spot Hans.
No, but I obviously did concerning your shitty third world Internet. Move from your farm to a city Cletus and please stop projecting.
Being obnoxious faggot is one of the reasons no one wants to talk to you except your Jow Forums buddies.
You know that this thread isn't about your insecurities about your manhood and projecting that to bunch of strangers on the Internet.

Lol. Looks like somebody is triggered. Calm down Sven. Just because the baby doesn't look like you doesn't mean he isn't yours!

>26 hours worth of content is only 4GB in 2018
This can't be true, that's literally worse than YIFY tier

Attached: 1543204525447.gif (480x358, 1.16M)

Who cares, I can watch infinite hours because I don't live in a cucked country

can't everything?

to be fair you can use h264 without royalties.
openh264.org/faq.html
anime has been using it since forever.

Netflix can spend a fucking age encoding a specific file perfectly since it saves so much bandwidth at scale

Surely it'd increase decoding requirements though? I can't believe that any amount of encoding time will compress 26h of footage into 4GB at any sort of usable bitrate

apparently they optimized the shit out of VP9 using machine learning which explains the bitrate savings

they'll probably do the same with AV1 when it's ready (if they don't already)

>Surely it'd increase decoding requirements though

not necessarily. low bitrate could compensate for the complexity

What the fuck am I reading.

That's been the case since 4k video became an used standard, so HEVC and VP9 (I know people use H264 for 4k, but those are idiots).

For 1080p, CPU decoding is feasible regardless of codec.

>1997
>enjoyed 4-8Mbps MPEG-2 DVD, film noise still intact
>2018
>less than 300kbps for a lovely vaseline filtered experience but you can watch it on the go because preloading a film onto the device is just too damn hard

You can still enjoy ~30mbps 1080p Blu-Rays and ~55mbps 2160p Blu-ray UHDs, you know?

Shit and ugly compression.

What's its Weissman score?

You can compress porn with indeo3 if you wanted to

>thinks they'll be around for another generation or two

Just look at the state of music. CD is still king for quality but once it's gone they'll be nothing but over compressed garbage or content that's been transcoded several times. You can't even buy it legally in formats like FLAC other than from severely limited libraries.

26 hours in 4GB works out to 395kbps go to Netflix and try it yourself (ctrl + shift + alt + s to manually select your bitrate). 300kbps video + 96kbps audio, it's SD looks like shit but it does work. a bit about the optimisation process if you're interested youtube.com/watch?v=S9E9xUbcYAM

Great.
You'll be able to watch """4k""" with VHS bitrate

>VHS
>bitrate

>using obsolete technology

>A codec that wont come out until like 2021 and will be encumbered by the same patent bullshit as HEVC, meaning it will be used by 8k Blu-Ray and companies that suck MPEG's dick.
I can't wait. And neither does the internet. Literally.
