The only (and I mean *ONLY*) thing that Windows still has on Linux is the UI/UX.
Why the fuck in the year of our lord 2018 do we still not have something that just works like Windows when it comes to having a reliable, fluid, nice-looking (and customizable, unlike Windows) alternative?
You can get close with some combinations (Cinnamon has some nice panels) but there's always a downside. >indicators only for current focused window >clicking on something open on another workspace sometimes jumps you to that window on that workspace, sometimes just launched a new window anyway >power menu sometimes doesn't work >no built in quick switch for audio outputs >inconsistency between programs (gtk/qt as an example, but this is not any better in Windows) >some WM/DEs use 80 gigs of ram to show you a window >basically every single option WILL be unpolished with ugly and distracting flaws and quirks how the fuck do will this ever get any better?
UX is a matter of taste. Objectively the benefit of using Windows is the amount of compatible software and hardware for it.
Jason Miller
It's all shit because it's been dumbed down, like Terry used to say. muh computing for everyone means implementing fisher price menus when you can do everything more efficiently on a minimalistic WM.
Colton Reed
It isn't. You have Xfce, Cinnamon, KDE. Usability of Linux on desktop is far better on these DEs than Windows. I mean, windows has a ton of issues which I just chose to live with until I exclusively switched to Linux for a year. Going back to windows for a week just to do some visual studio shit for college was the most painful thing ever. I honestly can't decide which is worse, windows 7 or 10. 10 just spams you with constant bullshit, has a fuck ton of things you have to manually disable and has the most disgustingly unintuitive UI in windows history. 7 is full of bugs and lacks so many features and UI controls than all Linux DEs have.
>no built in quick switch for audio outputs Doesn't pulseaudio/volume control do exactly this?
>unpolished This is honestly the only issue. Xfce isn't polished even on Mint, which is the best and most polished implementation of it. KDE is unintuitive and difficult to get used to, plus it wastes too much screen space on bullshit. Cinnamon is just meh. GNOME is poorly optimized, featureless and mostly written in JavaScript so it will have terrible performance which is unacceptable for something as simple as a DE.
Chase Campbell
I'm not talking about anything other than the polish and how you don't really tend to come across any little bugs or weird UI behavior. In all other aspects I feel that Linux is leagues above Windows
>Doesn't pulseaudio/volume control do exactly this? Didn't come with my distro, had to install something for it (which is okay but could well be built into volume options on the taskbar)
>Xfce, Cinnamon Xfce is fine if a tad barebones, and while I *am* enjoying Cinnamon so far it does have a lot of unpolished edges (had some really weird bugs when dragging pinned apps, for one).
>GNOME is poorly optimized, featureless and mostly written in JavaScript so it will have terrible performance which is unacceptable for something as simple as a DE. Isn't Cinnamon the same? I actually expected it to be much worse from what I heard of it, it actually runs alright
I honestly don't understand why you people don't just use a tiling window manager. It stays out of the way and you don't need to rice it because there's nothing to rice (except maybe the bar, but you can basically leave that as default)
Cooper Cox
>Linux is superior because it's not buggy >cinnamon is buggy holly shit lol XD
Ayden Phillips
>Isn't Cinnamon the same Not really, no. It's a bit heavier but it's definitely not like GNOME.
Levi Cook
I would use one if it was as good with a mouse as with a keyboard. Also don't those break simple things like popup windows?
Matthew Richardson
I know a lot of people disagree, but Windows looks horrible, and it's not even consistent.
Kayden Ward
Not him, but i3wm is actually pretty mouse-friendly. I've used it on an HTPC because of this. Lazy focus and scrolling on the panel to change workspaces are the main things. You can also send i3-msg commands over ssh to do anything a keybind could do, which is pretty great.
Ayden Hughes
this. Still better than any DE by default tho
Austin Gray
wow, It looks so good even though I would prefer regular closing buttons
Eli Harris
>Why the fuck in the year of our lord 2018 do we still not have something that just works Because Linux ass-nuggets can't agree on anything. They piss and moan about the slightest of changes regardless if those changes are for the better. That's why we have 5 thousand shitty desktop options and zero good ones.Everybody is a critic.
Kayden Martin
even 10? (ignoring the retarded new UI they're pushing)
Juan Johnson
What icons?
Angel Russell
kde plasma has pretty nice "icons only" task manager like windows, yes
There are elements of the Linux foundation that are outright hostile to the idea of Lunux on the desktop. Some of those elements are on the board. Honestly desktop Linux is doing great especially in the face of internal opposition.
Thomas Phillips
oh fuck that looks nice does it have thumbnail on hover for grouped windows?
Solus Budgie is unironically more polished than Windows and every other major linux WM, it's honestly quite surprising considering how small the dev team is in comparison.
i came from budgie and it really rocks, but it's missing a bunch of things that aren't available as extensions
