how the fuck do I add subtitles for mpv

Do they come as a separate file? mpv.io/manual/master/#options-sub-auto

There's no debate.
mpv
Just drag and drop?

I think the mpv devs are actually autistic. The config options are a mess, and the docs inisist that "there is no GUI...except the OSC GUI that isn't very good teehee xD"

I use Totem :)

> not using MPC-HC

>VLC, ever
I'm a MPC shill since I'm not a mindless drone but jesus christ why would you ever go with VLC? Very sure even MPV is better than that horse shit

As a MEDIA PLAYER not a LAN CLIENT, I've never seen a reason to use VLC. There has always been better options on every platform.

>The true winner is Gom Player

how the fuck do i make webms using mpv?

Seriously? Stop being retarded.

mpv for 4k remux
vlc for anything else

How is there an debate? What kind of braindead retard would intentionally not use mpv?

used to watch start-craft II with this, but mpv wins.

Wasn't there a new release of KCP recently? Can't find it anywhere

vlc on the right

>how the fuck do I add subtitles for mpv

Rename the subtitle file to the name of the video file. Easy

RTFM
You don't have to rename the file if you don't want to.

I am using mpc-hc right now. Been literally using Windows Media Player for like 12 years.
Honestly I cannot see much difference, it's no better no worse, only opens slightly faster and that's all I can see. I associated media files with it and I'll likely use it as long as this Windows installation will be around (prolly for a while) but doubt I'll install it again.

mpv
I really like the minimal interface. The only thing I really need is sound volumne up and down anyways.

Someone who likes basic functionality out of the box since it's 2000+18 and not 1699 hacking muslims in both senses of the word

>basic functionality
Can you give examples?

I still use Baka MPlayer because I got used to the interface and it still works fine.

Vlc cause I don't have to get a computer science degree for it to show the subtitles

either have them in the same folder or read the manual or drop the file while the video is playing

nobody uses totem

it is, and you don't need one, it's perfect as it is

>why would you ever go with VLC
because you use windows

you don't, you use ffmpeg

it werks ootb, fagot

mpv rtfm.mkv --sub-files=faggot.ass

MPC

VLC can be out of the box controlled with KDE Connect.
Mpv has a better UI and controls.

>using wangblows

Attached: Shrek.jpg (830x467, 52K)

I'll use MPV when they implement play next file in folder without me having to bust my balls adding a startup script like a faggot.

Putting one file in a folder involves CBT nowadays? Can you fill me in on the logistics?

VLC unless you're looking to increase your internet points.

>dragging a file into the window is too difficult
not gonna make it

When will mpv have GUI options?

never, its not for brainlets

pic related is actually pretty good it comes with my new microsoft windows 10 professional

Attached: 2bc2d5893987119e71bec8ae35s5a1b99.jpg (225x225, 7K)

Maybe if you were stuck with vlc you'd stop watching chink pedo cartoons like a degenerate

>If you don't use a reference sheet of options you are a brainlet.

you wanna watch a movie? VLC
you wanna fap with your fellow shills in MPV general? MPV
i have been using vlc for a decade and have never fuckin seen that happen once.

no debate, vlc is bloated

everything you want to change on the fly is in the OSD and the rest is configured in a config file that is easily transferred between systems.
yes you're a brainlet.

When I don't need to fiddle with the video
> mpv

When I need to deinterlace, force a resolution etc.
> vlc

I'm not about to learn every flag, switch and keyboard shortcut just to be able to use mpv for everything when I can just use both mpv and vlc.

>The Great Debate
... for the retarded and mentally challenged, yes. For the rest of the population it is mpv everywhere and vlc on the phone. It is a puzzle how someone can get something for the phone SO RIGHT and fucking it so badly on the desktop.

does mpv actually tonemap?

childhood is choosing between VLC and mpv
adulthood is realizing that Media Player Classic is more than enough

>use windows guise

Attached: 1521969203668.jpg (2048x1152, 121K)

VLC for porn.
MPC-HC for regular movies and tv shows.
MPV for 4K movies.

MPH-HC for webms but I wish I could see the thumbnails for them.

here you go

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been using VLC since it came and i have never had any issues with the picture like people here claim to have.
And i have a shit ton of movies and series in .mkv. All in 1080p or 720p.
I can watch for fuckin ages without even having a single problem with the picture.

And as far as i heard, MPV needs a shit ton of scripting and tweaking before it works good.
Why the heck should a sane person do this when he can install VLC and it runs fine out of the box?
Some autists here obviously have too little to do.
I hope for the NatSocs taking over again, then these lazy tweakers get their time in Arbeitslager.
Sieg Heil.

Nice post

>i have been using vlc for a decade and have never fuckin seen that happen once.
It's not as common as some people want you to believe, but it's not a myth either.

mv example.mp4 example.webm

Using VLC with Win7 and have never had such problems.
Maybe the videos are just encoded a shitty way with shitty codecs.

Are you asking him or telling him? You absolute autist

I've never had any issues with vlc either.

this is it I guess. I want to add subs into the file while being able to disable them if I want later. I know about the drag and drop but thanks.
tfw I installed codecs with ffmpeg and totem didn't recognize them, fucking retarded devs want you to download the codec in a specific way so that totem uses it, wew. Mpv on the other hand just works, has better codecs by default than the crappy vlc

kekz, doesn't happen for long but is annoying as fuck, that's why I use mpv I wish they made an app for Android in which I could listen music in the background, their codecs are pretty fucking good, the music plays without gaps even without needing to claim it as a feature. Fucking based player

>this is it I guess. I want to add subs into the file while being able to disable them if I want later. I know about the drag and drop but thanks.
Use MKVtoolNix and add subtitles to the file, you can decide within the program if you want the Forced or full subtitles to be displayed per default or if they have to be disabled per default.
You can also name the subtitles, audio files and video files within almost every video container with MKVtoolNix.

>Maybe the videos are just encoded a shitty way with shitty codecs.
Probably, but that still doesn't change the fact that I can play them flawlessly with mpv while VLC struggles.
If you are satisfied with VLC then great. Keep using it. I'm just saying that some people do experience these issues and switch to other media players because of it.

why are mpv fags so elitist about their software Jow Forums?

Not that guy but you must be an absolute moron if you don't understand that that is a suggestion. I believe you should contact your nearest psychiatric institution and get yourself checked out. It's not normal to be this confused. It's better for everyone if you're sectioned.

The real question is which piece of software will make lower quality video look better?

My guess is that these people use linux.
Linux on desktop computers seems to be shitty at handling more than one main process at a time.
Maybe it's an OpenGL issue? or a bad drivers and stuff?

I mean, i have and had a several different computers, both with AMD and Intel CPU's as well as AMD/ATI and nVidia GPU's in all kind of configurations over the years and never had problems with VLC. All on Win XP and Win7.
I do not either have a problem under OS X with my VLC. Plays flawlessly.

mpv has better scalers and other filters than vlc

>The config options are a mess
man mpv

A
FUCKING
FOOT

Attached: 1531760694079.png (800x800, 626K)

Not that guy but as he said some people do experience it, I've experienced it on Windows XP and Windows 7 using multiple configurations as well. His point wasn't everyone experiences is without question, so you can still have your flawless record while some of us have experienced it.

Can some good soul tell me where to place these lua files and js files etc for my mpv.
Im on ubuntu and i installed it to check and it's way better and faster already than vlc so thanks Jow Forums
But, if anyone can tell clearly where i should place these mpv user scripts it would be great.

Based
youtube.com/watch?v=c1pg4L4flcA

Why the fuck did they include it if it's not developed anymore?

Attached: zdGVdgE.jpg (1000x1500, 117K)

IINA

Make a folder called scripts in the same folder where mpv is. Put lua files in the scripts folder.

OK, then the encoder some videos are created with must be shit somehow.
I use to download .mkv releases and i also rip blu rays, but i have never seen such problems.
I am absolutely no video expert, but i have come over videos that hacked and where the timeline was not visible or you could at least not jump within the video.

I don't use totem anymore. Filed a bug report, they say it's GTK3's fault, except I installed five other media players linking to GTK3, even different compositors, and only totem has this problem and it's in every compositor.

Attached: totem_is_fucking_broken_now.png (989x567, 193K)

i installed it using apt. where is the mpv folder. do i need to build it again? from the actual source?

Good guess but If it was a problem with the encode, the same artifacting would appear in Chrome/Firefox, mpv, real player, and windows media player on the same files, also it would happen at the exact same time in the same spot which isn't the case.

If you have never seen it just google image search "VLC artifacting"

weird. I see that kind of dropped keyframe bullshit with mplayer and gstreamer-based players, but not with VLC.

Attached: glitch_yo.gif (400x412, 859K)

Wtf? Have you used linux before?
/etc/mpv/scripts/
I'm a Windows fag btw

wouldn't it be better if he changes in .config/mpv

Better how? Both work.

who /kmp/ here

$HOME/.config/mpv is for only the current user, without fucking up the rest of the system
/etc/mpv/scripts/ is for all the users in the system

That's why even in Wangblows you have %appdata% inside %userprofile%

I know this. Saying it's better is wrong since it's a matter of preference. Maybe someone wants the settings to apply system wide.

You should touch stuff out of your home _only_ if you want system-wide effects. If you want to experiment or don't know what do you want, stick with your home

Who gives a shit?
They both work perfectly fine. Anyone complaining about either of them is nitpicking.

smplayer+mpv

VLC.
It works on my Linux box, it works on my windows box.
It has stream-to-chromecast feature (at least the linux one) which is absolute fucking killer.

Press enter nigga

ffplay :^)

based

What there is to debate? For normalfags it's vlc. For people who care about quality it's mpv.
>tfw RAVU r4 + haasnsoft + sphinx tscale
Feels good.

IINA

both mpv and vlc just werk for me and I've never had an issue with vlc (I mean like the picture getting completely destroyed, that has never happened to me), but using mpv never to tweak it because I don't really care so long as it werkz feels like a waste, so I use vlc these days.
