Is this why there's been no technological advance in western medicine?

2/10 bait
read up on some of the advancements being made, its fucking jaw dropping. A good one to look at is cataracts surgery

Take a wild guess.
Almost no research money is given for defensive medicine since the late 80s when the fifth generation of antibiotics were invented for example.
Drug trials are not only flawed but incredibly rigged with almost no independent oversight.
Jordan Kelly
If I was a biotech company I'd pour money into cures just so I can release a cure to what all the other companies are just releasing treatments for.
Logan Nguyen
Yes and no. I work for a medical imaging company and honestly the diagnostic is really quite amazing. However, the treatment side is where everything is a clusterfuck, mainly because there's so much money tied to continued medication, office visits, etc.
Justin Gomez
same. I'm a 3rd-year phd student in biomed engineering, and our lab is working on new diagnostic techniques. diagnosing cv disease using mri, ct scans, mirna profiling, machine learning for diagnosis, etc. as a consequence i read a lot of new literature on imaging/diagnostic techniques and they're getting breddy damn good. i'm not very up to speed on treatment but the learning i had to do on it is ghastly. a large part of the problem is government regulation, and the other part is companies wanting treatments and not cures
Robert Kelly
This.
Brayden Anderson
You mean that they are curing something that they can't exploit with a long term treatment instead? Conspiracy debunked then.
Levi Reyes
hurr durr just going to ignore all the advances in cancer research
Michael Long
why the fuck would you NOT cure something? Can you imagine the absolute fucking shitstorm this would cause? Zucc gets dragged to congress because of your data getting leaked instead of sold, what do you think congress would do to Goyman sacs if they did this?
Also not to mention goyman has fucking fingers in every bit of industry, it would be very beneficial for them to keep you alive.
Grayson Richardson
If curing things were so simple even a retard like you could find cures.

no, it's profit. Developing some new drug or procedure is very costly and if the probability of making all that money back threefold in a couple of years to satisfy stockholders, it's not worth doing.
Nicholas Cox
This has been the case for the last half of the century at least.
Yeah yeah, "curing" something by selling you pills for the rest of your life, they simply keep inventing new stuff to cure you from, antidepressants being the biggest legal(because there's plenty of illegal scams) scam out there.
Adam Carter
>why the fuck would you NOT cure something?
>what is a stable income source

>why the fuck would you NOT cure something? Can you imagine the absolute fucking shitstorm this would cause?
That's socialism user. Medicine is a service, if you want something you have to pay for it otherwise you're stealing from society. Turning medicine into a subscription based model is a legitimate business decision.
Or so they argue. Imo when ai and nanobots are invented we need to purge all capitalists, i dont trust them with this tech.
Benjamin Roberts
>if you want something you have to pay for it otherwise you're stealing from society
Well of course. And what I want to pay money for is a cure.
>Turning medicine into a subscription based model is a legitimate business decision
You can make that decision. But if some new business pops up selling cures, if you turn to the government to get them banned, YOU are a socialist AND you need to die.
Caleb Lopez
Theres no point in advancement in medicine, ethnomedicine is already the peak
Nathaniel Reyes
seen a documentary about phages/ super bugs that are antibiotic resistant russia is the only one that's done it, it's been tried in america but pharma will not give funding unless it's been patented
Benjamin Wood
>stable source of income
Very unlikely. You would have to contain symptoms, ensure whatever sickness doesnt get worse, doesnt prevent the person from earning an income (so you can get paid) and also somehow prevent competitors from just making a cure.
Leo Young
>But if some new business pops up selling cures, if you turn to the government to get them banned, YOU are a socialist AND you need to die.
Actually, a socialist would just want it subsidised.
Stop pretending to not be a socialist to look edgy on 4chanel.

capitalism isn't perfect, but at the very least we are moving towards the future instead of stagnating in your shitty little smurf wonderland fantasies

Worked under Eastern European communism. Poland and Baltics took infinite EU money to get back on their feet, the non EU ones still struggle with health care. Even in Poland itself outside of the big shiny cities things have not recovered.
Communism is all about muh state, health care is one of the easiest ways to show the power of the state over your life.

yeah man that cataracts surgery has come a long way since gouging them out with a piece of rock in 29AD. Fortunate too since you gunna get cataracts pretty much guaranteed if you have certain eye procedures :^)
Asher Myers
and cataract "surgery" is literally a 30 minute procedure now where the patient goes home the same day.
Used to be a surgery then 3 days of laying absolutely still.
Lincoln Anderson
You can charge a million dollars for a cure, idiot.
Chase Gutierrez
Or you can charge $1000 per person per month for centuries for treatment, inbred.
Cameron Wright
Even if some business prevents a cure to propagate, some other businesses or their competition will pop up and propagate the idea, while selling it as better, cheaper and actually curing you.
Adam Jenkins
>some other businesses will lobby government and get laws passed to allow them to copy the formula and create generics to sell for cheaper to profit off the same customers while never thinking for a second to look for a cure
fixed for reality
