You don’t need root. It’s an x86 emulator running Alpine called iSH. It uses a JIT which compiles to pointers to gadgets so it isn’t frustratingly slow. It’s nice to have an equivalent to Termux on iOS.

That's not true. I ran fortune on my iPhone SE that I had for a few months to see if iOS is still shit (spoilers: it is) and I didn't even have to jailbreak it. Cydia impactor allows you to side load any apps you want, but the catch is that if you're not a paid iPhone developer you have to reinstall the app every 7 days.

But anyone can do that. Just install GNURoot which creates a root fs to install it on and then download the installer image for the distro and install it. You can install *any* distro on an Android phone. For a long time my vpn server was an old Galaxy S running emdebian under the Android kernel for a full ARM Debian system while still having full access to Android applications. The catch was that you couldn't run a WM without having root access to be able to kill the "surface flinger" process so that xorg could load unless you wanted to do it via a VNC app in Android, but it was a VPN server so I killed SF and left Debian headless.
