There are many different platforms but those two resemble twitter and tumblr, respectively, the most. PixelFed is an instagram clone and an interesting replacement for tumblr but it's still super alpha.

There are three main ways of discovering content.
1. After logging in, on the rightmost column you will have two options "Local Timeline" and "Federated Timeline". The first is a feed of posts, or "toots" on your instance, the second on all instances yours is connected to. Click on either and look for something interesting.
2. On the leftmost column use the search field to query for hashtags or users.
3. Find another instance you like, go to it's website and read the timeline. It will be akin to checking a boards catalog. You can then interacting with people from your instance by using their usernames ( e.g. @[email protected]).

Mastodon and Pleroma as said as I said above they have millions of users. Some tumblr content creators are moving to them now.

I never tried but not very hard I guess. You can setup your own instace and crawl others. There won't be much throttle since it will look like their normal functioning.
We could also use neocities.org the bad part is the the free account only hosts up to 1gb I think.

They will actually. Those platforms use the OStatus and ActivityPub apis, there are a lot of libs for it. It would not be really third party like in the case of instagram where you have to download and crawl the pages in search of jpg files. The server would just happily hand you everything.
I use mastodon and I don't think it supports downloading other people posts atm but I'm sure the devs would not be against this feature.

Pixiv operates a mastodon instance thought. One of the biggests. They will probably end up there on way or the other.

To change instance you have to create a new account, but you can take your friend list with you so your feed and messages still look the same.

This pasta leaves out something which is financing. A server can choose how they want to fund themselves and doesn't need to ban people just to please advertisers, although they could if they wanted to. The users donating to a patreon seems to be a popular option.
You don't need to use pleroma for that, you can use any app you want to connect to any mastodon instance, pick one that has a single column view
