Serious answer - use middle finger, it's not faster than mouse, but way faster than trackpad for me.
(also tpmiddle.exe for opening/closing tabs and scrolling)

the trackpoint is positioned so that you can use it easily with the index finger while remaining in a normal typing hand position.

I've had to get used to only using it since whenever I plug my x220 in to charge the trackpad gets all messed up.

Set the sensitivity to maximum and touch it gently, deliberately. You don't need lots of force applied on it when it's sensitive, just apply directional force back and forth. Make sure your pointer finger is slightly curved, to avoid fatigue and maximize accuracy. You'll get better with experience.
