As far as general transfer gain goes, it does not matter where the gain is introduced, only what makes it to the end. It doesn't look like the PRTF target is reflected in the general response target curve.

95% of what you're hearing is simply the frequency response. You just don't like neutral sound. Timbre is garbage? Maybe you prefer the uneven bass response of dynamic driver IEMs. Congested sound? Maybe you prefer a weaker upper midrange sound as this can increase the sense of depth.
