Getting a T540p second-hand and planning to put a new SSD in it, what drivers should I install and what should I not install?

What operating system is best for Thinkpad usability and battery life?

What operating system?
Unironically windows tends to have the best power management out of the box but minimal linux installs will usually have better battery life.

Jow Forums here, t430 3 SSD's, 16 Go RAM, 1600x900, t420 classic keyboard, 9 cell main battery + 9 cell second battery.
looking forward to put an i7 qm and change the fan/heatsink and power adapter when i get more money, I also want to mod the screen to FHD but i need to buy the adapter from chinks.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Any are fine once configured.

Merry Christmas, boys.

My T440p doesn't beep when I unplug it or plug it in. How can I fix this?

>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
Is the L series ok if I have a low budget?

merry christmas comfy user

Merry Christmas /tpg!/
How many Thinkpads do you own? What do you use them for?
Me:
x220 - school computer. I got a slice battery for it and it lasts me all day. super easy to carry around, and it's good enough for my CS classes. it looks like a piece of crap and it's got arch+i3 on it so the affirmative action kids won't try to steal it.
w520 - primary computer at home. I got it docked and I use it for more processor intensive stuff (photo editing, painting, gaming)
t450s - just bought one to give myself as a christmas present. hoping that it can replace both my current thinkpads as a home + school solution. paid about $230 for it, which seems to be a decent enough deal.

what's your budget? older models are dirt cheap and still better than L models.

No.

i can get a x220 i5 2.4 ghz 4gb ddr3 ram 128ssd @ 12.5 in screen for 25000 ¥, about $230

good deal?
i want freedom and no phone posting

cnchi is impressively bad

Got my dad a a T440 that has Win 10 on it but I know he still uses Win 7. Is there anyway to get the Win 10 key and use it on another machine or isitlocked to the Thinkpad? My dad's too much of a boomer to use Win 10 and I'd rather not be his tech support fixing it everytime an update breaks something.

I'm not sure about japan but I got my x220 here in America for about $100.

Hope you all have a good christmas

Put win 10 ltsb on there with classic shell desu

I want a cheap tablet thinkpad preferably 16:10 which one do you recommend Jow Forums?

>Thinkpad Yoga 460
Use this for uni and drawing dual boot 10 ltsb and debian
>x220
For distro hopping. Currently using it as an anime machine running osx though. IINA is peak comfy

>t410
Not got a use for it yet needs a battery and a drive before i got osx i used to sometimes and just put my x220 drive in there but cant do that with the osx install

Whats a gokd amount of ram to get for the last 2 currently only have 3gb and 4gb. I was thinking of getting 8gb for each. Would single dimms be best incase i want more later on?

I need a slim portable 15" laptop that would allow me to run VM's comfortably and to do some light gaymen on the side, so I've narrowed down my choice to the Dell XPS 15 and the Thinkpad X1 extreme

At first I wanted to go for the X1 extreme but I've read that Lenovo's QC was utter shit and I don't want to go through the hassle of sending my laptop back 3 times in a row

thoughts ?

ok no more memepads for me until ryzenpads get cheap

Bought a T440s because i have to travel a lot and far to work, and its fucking amazing.
My parents have an old HP like 10 years old, they noticed my new laptop and they might want one too. What model should i get for them? I feel a T440s would be too small, and they mostly use their laptop on the desk so a large laptop is fine too.

I'm seriously considering building an X301 from parts from 2 destroyed X301s for a total of ~$70, should I do it? I want an ultraportable daily driver, and the 13 inch form factor seems ideal for me. Does anybody here have one?

Is this one of those newer Thinkpad?

I was ready to buy an A485, but then I read Linux didn't like Ryzen mobile chips. How true is this? Would be running n00buntu on it.

is it worth it to tear a part my t430 and flash coreboot?

it doesn't ultimately remove ME like trannyboot, so honestly what's the benefit?

Attached: 1543462036627.png (518x767, 378K)

me_cleaner neutralizes ime pretty effectively. Also you get whitelists removed, overclocking for quad cores unlocked, and muh freedumbs. People claim that boots faster than stock UEFI but for me the difference is minimal.

Which Thinkpads should I look at if I have about a grand to spend on one? All I care about is good performance, screen and build quality. Don't really care about the size as long as it isn't outrageously big, good cooling so the CPU doesn't throttle is more important. I'd prefer a 15 inch model, but 13 inch works as well.

Does the newer Thinkpads like T560 and T570 have user upgradable RAM and storage?

P50, P51
non-S T-series generally have good cooling but they use ULV chips. 15-inch T-series models have 2 DIMMS and a 2.5 inch slot.

What's the best I machine I could get with 400 bucks?

unfortunately i have the 35w i7 that cant be oc'ed and i dont really need ac wifi.
me_cleaner may be worth it though, have not looked as much into as i have coreboot desu

I have a Surface Pro 6
All I want from a thinkpad is: 2in1 ( folding convertible or ability to pull apart like the surface, doesn't matter), a stylus and good cooling/little noise.

The surface itself has no fan which is fine - it gets hot if I'm playing games but when I'm drawing or using it for notes it does not.
That's what I want from a thinkpad.
That and at least 16GB of RAM, TB3 port and ideally under 1.4KG.

I've tried a yoga 730 13 inch but the fans at the back made it all but impossible to use unless you held it specific ways. In addition, the fans would go off like crazy and the performance sucked with games compared tot he SP6

I'm leaning towards the p52 but CES is in janurary and I might just hold out to see whats the new product line might be. I also heard the 2020 lineup might have a new design

I'm looking at thinkpad right now and was wondering if this was a good deal. Thinkpad t440 I7 4600u 12gig ram 256 ssd for $200.

X230 for 230 euros / 260 usd
>i7 3520M
>8GB RAM
>IPS display
>180GB SSD
Good deal?

is that poop?

x250 5300u 16GB 512GB @2.30GHz noturbo
debian + wayland
very quiet

question
is it safe to buy a cpu for t430 from ebay (Chinese seller)?

What human being would buy a white Thinkpad?

I replaced my T440p trackpad, but Windows keeps reinstalling the driver even if I tell it not to. I don't have to reinstall, do I?

Anyone? I'd really like to know if I'm making a terrible mistake.

Me? Okay, I'm a horse so it doesn't really count.

X301 is really slow and not suitable as a Daily. Get a ThinkPad 13 G1 if out really want 13", or Celestia Forbid the E3-- series.

install gentoo

Why should I use it on my thinkpoor instead of LXDE?

X240

Hmm, that SU9600 does seem pretty slow. I was thinking that if the L7400 in my X60t can handle most of my everyday tasks pretty well, the CPU in an X301 would be sufficient too, especially with Linux and vaapi.

Well, if I can't get a cheap 13" then I'm going to start looking at X2** series.

ebay.com/itm/LENOVO-THINKPAD-T530-15-6-i5-3210M-2-50GHz-8GB-500GB-WIN8-PRO-COA-T5-E14/292883775681?epid=1453810394&hash=item44313bc0c1:g:JR4AAOSw~5dcHRFQ:rk:8:pf:0

should i do it?

plan to do light PS1-era gaming, music listening, etc.

x240 x250 t440p or t450 which should i get?

Attached: Screenshot from 2018-12-23 10-53-21.png (1202x581, 550K)

if its that cheap its prolly 90% cum

ordered x280. can't wait till it's here. hold me anons. i'm excited

Attached: knxa.png (963x999, 1.57M)

Hey the 9600 isnt that terrible, what do you plan on doing with it?
iirc the X301 has one of the best thinkpad keyboards too!

With that you can buy a x230 Tablet mint with a 240gb ssd and have 30 bucks to spare for McDonald's, damn I love McDonald's.

why not a dekstop pc instead of the w520.

At that point I'd rather just get a t440p.

Which ThinkPad should I get, /tpg/? I'm looking for a laptop that's fun for fucking around with modding and distro hopping in the weekend, but can be used for programming/web browsing/giving presentations when not broken. I'm currently considering the t420 or the t430 but can't really decide (I'm also open to other suggestions). A decent processor, an abundant supply of parts and reliability are important.

google.com/amp/s/m.newegg.com/amp/products/N82E16834985174 anyone have experience with this battery? Thinking of pulling the trigger on it

Mostly web browsing, programming, music listening, maybe some movies as well. Not that demanding I suppose.

How do I make the lid look nice again without removing too much of the rubber coating?

Remove then reapply rubber coating.

Those milkers aren't real

are they?

>Thinkpad T440p still hasn't arrived
>It's already Christmas
>Still waiting

What do you Jow Forumsuys reccomend I should do first with my memepad once it arrives?
>inb4 install gentoo

Also, Merry Christmas

Attached: smhfam.jpg (550x733, 241K)

Install the new trackpad asap

I think an X301 would work well for that desu. The screen isnt fantastic. Imo if you can find an IPS X230 or IPS X220, get one of those.

That's great to know, thanks.

Just be yourself

Btw, how does the screen compare to something like a T430? It can't be much worse, can it?

its not that bad (in fact its god tier compared to T420, T430 TN).

How do I turn the fan off? lowering the cpu to 5% does nothing.

Nice to know, some reviews made it seem like it's literally the single worst panel ever made by man.

T440s here,got it for 299€ with 8gb of ram i5 4300U and a 256GB of SSD
Best laptop so far

My rich uncle is offering to buy me a computer and price isn't an issue. What should I get?

I know that the x280 gets a lot of hate, but I love it.
Running Freebsd and it works flawlessly.

Hope you got a good deal user.

Depends what you want to do with it

X230 with i5-3320M or i7-3520M? Is the i7 that much faster than the i5? What about heat and such?

Attached: file.jpg (500x500, 53K)

"rich uncle" kek, what you got to do for it?

porn with your uncle?
get a mac then

Anyone ever got problems with their x230?
Mine is basically useless right now, because for some reason, budging it causes a sudden loss of power, with the disk clacking and the speakers popping. I searched on google and found tons of forums posts about it with no answer... I changed the CPU paste and it worked again for a few months (about 2) and then did it again. I opened it, cleaned it, and worked only for a week or so. It seems moving parts around helps but I don't know the source of the issue.

In any case, it's weird to see the x230 still recommended ; am I just super unlucky?

>heat and such
And NO, I do NOT know what I'm talking about. Thank you very much!

should I sell my T420 for a X220?

Attached: 1545355018414.png (769x1040, 262K)

x230 has copper pipes cooler vs x220 aluminum
i got i5 it doesnt seem that hot even with stress test
battery life is crap regardless (5 hours/9cell)

Well I wrote up in the last thread that it the Linux kernel does not work well with Raven Ridge CPU states and was trying to troubleshoot it to make it work and I failed. What do you think? I had the same problems with a Dell Latitude 5495. So buy one and just relive what I've lived through twice if you don't believe me.

Attached: IMG_20181224_201734.jpg (4208x3120, 1.51M)

Does the latest Linux kernel help at all? There's a lot of AMD-related kernel development happening right now.

>(5 hours/9cell)
da fugg
how old is your battery?

Nope. I've tried many kernels. The latest I tried was 4.18 and the padoka ppa for latest mesa drivers. It seems like its a crapshoot. Id use Windows but I value my privacy more than my cpu preference. I really wanted the Vega iGPU but oh well. I gave up Steam and mostly just play GOG games now anyways. Pretty familiar with Linux now and dont see myself switching back to Windows for personal use. Hopefully over time the amdgpu drivers and zen states with be stable. For now, Ive returned to using a nice Latitude 7490 with an i7-8650u. Its a pretty nice system and does nt crash on me.

Hi all, i open this post to ask about a problem that i have with my Thinkpad T480s and his touchpad working with every linux distro for desktop environment that I ever tried.

The thing it's a little bit difficult to explain, but the feeling of the touchpad it's a little bit weird sometimes. I tell sometimes because the mouse acceleration or sensivity it's not always the same as I feel. Sometimes it is very linear like W10, that is what i want but randomly it changes to a strange weird feeling of acceleration or sensivity that feels the coursor/touchpad very laggy or strange. When it turns bad, the small movements are terrible and impossible.

I cant understand what's happening here, I'm using libinput driver which is supossed the "standard" after synaptics driver. I tried with Arch(Antergos), Ubuntu, Fedora and all distros are the same, doesn't matters the DE Gnome or KDE or XFCE.
I don't know if I'm missing some parameters to config in the driver but i can't understand this, if you could help me I would be very grateful.
The rest of the touchpad works very well, I mean the clickpad buttons, the buttons on the top of the touchpad, right click, button simulator....

If it helps, I'm using this laptop.
Lenovo T480s

Sounds like something is shorting.

What temps do you actually reach under full CPU and GPU load?
