They straight up did it to get access to GNU coreutils. Its not a real linux system and has no support for any X based windows.

literally just found out. I started reading the Low-Level Programming book and they listed it (docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10) as one of the options to set up the environment, as assembly development is supposed to be easier on Linux than on Windows

Feels better than cygwin but the performance in bash scripts is atrocious

I've used this, actually. It runs in a shell, and has access to all your Windows files, as if the disk was mounted. There's no DE or anything, just the shell.

gnu+linux is more convenient than windows for certain tasks. Having a subsystem like that helps you combine features of the two OS's for maximum comfort. However since windows is proprietary non-free software it compromises the whole system and I recommend against using it.
