Dial up, now that was the real internet.

Dial-up had two good qualities:
One, it made LAN parties viable, since most people couldn't play games without lag, or share files, any other way. Yes, its good that we have those two things now, but it means we lost a cultural institution.
Two, it made bloated websites nonviable as a business proposition. All the advertising bullshit we have to block today wouldn't be there if websites had to load promptly at 5KB/s. Same with the useless javascript (that is, all javascript). The cancer of the modern internet, video, was nearly nonexistent at those low bandwidth levels.
We really should have had the Great Recession start earlier, around 2005, and be accompanied by bankruptcies of companies operating major fiber links so there would have been a massive bandwidth crunch. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, they all would have been strangled in the cradle had that happened. Abominations like Twitch and Discord never would have had the chance to evolve in the first place.
Literally the recession (it can barely be called great) happened during the smartphone takeoff and barely even blunted it.
