Dial up, now that was the real internet.

Dial-up had two good qualities:

One, it made LAN parties viable, since most people couldn't play games without lag, or share files, any other way. Yes, its good that we have those two things now, but it means we lost a cultural institution.

Two, it made bloated websites nonviable as a business proposition. All the advertising bullshit we have to block today wouldn't be there if websites had to load promptly at 5KB/s. Same with the useless javascript (that is, all javascript). The cancer of the modern internet, video, was nearly nonexistent at those low bandwidth levels.

We really should have had the Great Recession start earlier, around 2005, and be accompanied by bankruptcies of companies operating major fiber links so there would have been a massive bandwidth crunch. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, they all would have been strangled in the cradle had that happened. Abominations like Twitch and Discord never would have had the chance to evolve in the first place.

Literally the recession (it can barely be called great) happened during the smartphone takeoff and barely even blunted it.

Dude holy shit.

Back when people were on dialup LAN parties weren't for playing games, people were furiously copying disks, go back to sucking cock you fucking pretender faggot.

the old internet is still there, it's not like you cannot write a website in pure html or host an irc, ftp, gopher server. fucking kys faggot, faster internet is awesome for it's true purpose aka warez

Jesus christ, I see you personally shitting up this board almost daily, do you ever leave your cave?

I'm here like once a week for a few hours.

You must have no life.

>or share files
those were literally the next three words I said you fucking retarded tripfag

I had cable in the 90s.

And yet they were almost entirely fucking irrelevant.

Maybe 1 out of 20 disks in a disk swapping party were actually porn, and even then it was like 2 images of dianna troy from fucking star trek.

Go fuck yourself idiot you weren't even alive when this shit was going down. I was there.

WIN /R, now THAT was the REAL Windows

Even if that did happen and things would actually play out that way, don't pretend that someone wouldn't simply try the same things as soon as they became viable. This shit was always inevitable.
This guy's got it right anyway, I love computing history and I've probably hoarded more old hardware and software than anyone else on this board and you still couldn't pay me to go back. Being able to use my old gear to its fullest potential with modern conveniences and fast internet connections makes it the best time to be into this shit, it's only the 2030s and beyond that really depresses me.

30 minutes to download one MP3 track on Kazaa.

kill yourself sawako

inb4 feeding the trolls

Yeah,nah... Fast interwebz is so they can take it away 100%. Maybe not in 3-5 years but definitely in 10 years.
Games will stream, movies will stream, you wont be able to buy actual HW because of price wall.
You will probably have some streambox/smartphone/all-in-one 16K 7" inch screen you can put into some cardboard VR.
Want to play game?
3 hours=5$
7 hours=10$
-10% if you allow adds,+15% if you want High quality settings.

they can't take away what I already have, hardware was expensive in the 90's so that's not an issue either. you sound like a retard who plays fortnite and buys shit on the apple store

t.actual 30 year-old boomer

>Windows

What is bakla

I don't want to go back to those times and the last LAN party I held was in 2010, back when 100 mbs dl internet was already common here.

Only underage people who didn't use that stuff would want to use it.

no gigabyte-sized day 1 patches either.
